Un-Break His Heart

Barry skidded into the Warehouse. Between Julian and Caitlin, he stopped, hands out towards Caitlin with caution. "Stop this," he begged.

Caitlin hadn't reached the full appearance of Killer Frost, but she was clearly approaching it. Her posture had tightened, her hands no longer frail and kept close to her body, and her hair was shifting to turn white. Her eyes held pure frustration when she looked at Barry. No trace of the Caitlin he knew was in her own body anymore.

"Get out of here!" she snapped. Her fingertips frosted over.

"Stop this," he said softly.

"Get out of here!" she yelled again.

"You know I can't," said Barry.

"What are you doing?" whispered Julian harshly, wavering his finger in her direction. "Take her out!"

"You don't want to do this. You don't want to hurt anybody."

"She's willing to hurt somebody, knock her out!" shouted Julian.

Barry knocked someone out, but it wasn't Caitlin. He punched Julian with lightning speed, waiting for the sound of his unconscious body hitting the floor, then he took a step toward. He said, "Caitlin-"

"Leave me alone," she said sharply.

Barry shook his head. "What are you doing?"

"I have to find Alchemy," said Caitlin.

"We will find him, together," he encouraged.

"No, you don't understand! I don't want to lock him up! I need him to help me."

"Help him, what?" he asked.

"I need him to get rid of my powers!"

Barry's shoulders fell. Softly, he said, "I don't know if it works that way..."

"You don't know that it doesn't," said Caitlin.

"I know that we love you," he decided to say. He took a step forward. "And we will do everything we can to help you. You and I have been through too much together to let each other down now. Please. Let me help you."

For a second, Barry thought his words worked. He thought he had brought her back. Her frosted fingertips had thawed, and the tip of her shoe inched for him, but then, with a shake of her head, she was lost again. Her cold, blue eyes returned.

"Like you helped your mother?"

"Caitlin," he sighed.

"Or Wally? Or me? Or... Or Parker?" she jabbed, knowing it would hurt him. She kept speaking when he lowered his head shamefully. "You keep messing with everyone's lives, wrecking everything, and we're left to pick up the pieces from your mistakes. Some things you break can't be put back together."

"You don't think I thought about it?" he asked her, his chest physically in pain by what he was about to admit. "You don't think I thought about begging Alchemy to bring back my wife? If not for me, for my daughter. My precious girl has to live without her mother, and because of me. No matter what I changed, what timeline I'm in, she was destined to die. I can't make the same mistake again. I won't let someone else get taken, again, by death, or by darkness. I can fix this."

"Like you fixed Cisco's family? You didn't tell Cisco that you screwed him worst of all, did you?" challenged Caitlin.

Barry felt his body freeze.

Caitlin took notice. She searched for a security camera in the room, then nodded to it. "You hear that, Cisco?! Dante was alive! Healthy and happy, until Barry created Flashpoint. When he reset things, that's what killed him. Barry is the reason your brother is dead."

It was then, during the stunned silence, where the CCPD caught onto the case. A fierce cry of, "Alpert's down! Shoot her!" commenced, then gunshots were firing from every which direction at a panicked Caitlin.

Barry grabbed her and moved her to a different part of the Warehouse, saving both the Cops and Caitlin from hurting one another. She, however, didn't care who she hurt. She had formed an icicle in her hands while he checked around the corner. She stabbed it into his calf.

"That severed your triceps surae, even with your healing powers, it'll take four hours to regenerate," she said quickly. "Don't follow me."

Then, she ran, and, for the first time, Barry wasn't able to follow her.

By the time Barry limped his way to the Cortex, he was angrier than he had been in a long time. He was angry with himself, mostly, because Caitlin was right.

He had let Parker die, he let his father die, and he let himself create Flashpoint. He let himself come back from Flashpoint, and he killed Cisco's brother. He let himself get so beaten by Savitar that Caitlin was forced to use her powers, thus pushing her over the edge. He struggled to find an aspect of his life that he couldn't blame himself for.

Cisco couldn't look him in the eye. He was in the Cortex, but he didn't rush to Barry's aid, or help treat his bleeding leg. He stayed pacing the length of the Cortex, Melody fast asleep in his arms. He normally wasn't one to take her from the crib during a nap; he only tried to busy himself from what he didn't want to accept: he had no one.

Barry watched him from the Medical Bay. His daughter helped to fill the tear in Cisco's heart. He wasn't going to take her away from him, although he wanted to seek comfort in the child, too. His pain was equaled Cisco's, perhaps, in the number of people they had lost. It hadn't registered in either of their minds to seek help within each other. Instead, Melody did it for them.

"How much does it hurt?" asked Iris, after a while of tense silence.

"As much as I deserve," said Barry plainly.

"...Let me know," said Joe, finishing his phone call as he went into the Medical Bay. "They took Julian to County General. He's still out cold. How hard did you hit him?"

"I don't know. I didn't try to knock him out," said Barry. He slipped on his shoes. "Or, maybe I did."

Iris and Joe helped him to stand on his feet. He limped into the Cortex, where he found Cisco. He had been walking out, but he saw Barry, and lowered his eyes to his feet. He stopped, when Barry called his name.

"Cisco, look... What Caitlin said--"

"Was she lying?" he asked simply.

"No. I'm--"

"You're sorry? That you killed my brother? Or that you killed my best friend? Because he was here. He was alive, until you created Flashpoint," he said. Every word generated more anger, more steps towards Barry, until he reached him and then they turned into small shoves.

"I know, man," said Barry; all he could truly utter.

Cisco blinked hard, trying desperately to stop from crying. "I don't even know how to feel right now. All I know is that I can't lose another best friend, and my last one is out there and we need to find her. Can we do that?"

"Yeah."

"I hacked Julian's computer," he muttered. "Caitlin had him look up two addresses. 16 Hawthorne Avenue and 1104 Truman Place."

"She's trying to find the Alcalytes, I was trying to say," said H.R. proudly.

"What exactly would she want with his followers?" asked Iris.

"She thinks they can lead her to Alchemy, she wants him to take her powers away," explained Barry.

"We know. We heard everything," said Cisco, annoyed. He didn't skip a beat before he continued on. "Well, two Alcalytes, two addresses. Which one's she gonna hit first?"

"We gotta watch both," suggested Barry.

"You're gonna stay here; you can barely walk. I'll take Hawthorne," ordered Cisco.

"I'll take Truman!" offered H.R.

"I care about Caitlin, but I don't want to leave Wally," said Joe.

Iris shook her head. "No, Dad, Barry and I will stay here with Wally. You go with H.R."

"Oh, I would love that! You and me: All-Star Team Up. Hey, you know what, I'll make us two Cappuccinos for the road, so we can be ready for the long night ahead of us!" cheered H.R. "And, hey, not to worry, Barry. We'll help her!"

H.R. then bounced from the Cortex.

Joe followed, after an eye roll to his daughter.

Cisco approached Iris, carefully handing off Melody to her godmother. Her little eyes opened for a brief second, but she snuggled into Iris easily, familiar with her touch. Cisco brushed his hand across Melody's curls, then pressed a kiss to her head.

"Love you, Princess," he whispered.

"Cisco," called Barry after him. "If you find her..."

"I won't call you. You've done enough."
