Chapter eight

Hawkpaw was finally, what you call, ordinary. He still hated attacking the other golden apprentice. Goldenpaw hadn't spoke to him since. Could he blame her? Whiteleaf was his new mentor. Goldenpaw was dedicated to helping others. She was smarter than him.

Hawkpaw couldn't have asked for a better life now. His old life was thrown into the dust. He hated talking about past tense. It made the voices come crawling back to him. He then turned to his mentor.

She smiled at him." Well. Battle training," she meowed." If you are ever pinned, laugh yourself forward and then you'll be the one pinning." She nodded." Try," she purred. He mimicked her words. It was a struggle pinning the larger cat, considering she—

Love is a sickly thing that masks hatred.

Hawkpaw froze in place, vulnerable. His mentor hissed and nearly threw him until he kept her pinned." One, two, three!" She nodded off approval. Hawkpaw grinned." So, am I going to hunt now, or—"

"No. You didn't pass a lot of fighting, therefore help the medicine cats and clean the elders for tics and...well, I would make you refresh every den." She frowned. I should!" You know what, you will!" She purred. Hawkpaw's jaw dropped." Start now," her chilling gaze made Hawkpaw's paws itch furiously.

"Stupid Whiteleaf." He muttered." Always telling me what to do." He spat." Hawkpaw!" Goldenpaw called. Hawkpaw finished batting down fresh moss and caught up with his sister." I need...juniper berries." She frowned." I saw some nearby the creek. Get them for me?" She asked. Hawkpaw smiled and nodded. He leaped into the water. The water lifted him up, rushing into his fur.

He struggled and panicked when the tide clawed at him. He struggled to keep his head just above the water's wavy surface. He sank his claws into the earth and pulled himself out. He snatched the berries by the stem. He suffered by swimming back until Goldenpaw turned to him. She lashed her tail and unsheathed her claws. She shoved the juniper berries into his mouth." I'm not..." he felt droopy and lousy. His muscles felt like they were loose, all thin.

"Those are deathberries." She meowed, shoving him into the river. He stared at her with wide eyes." Wh-why..." he gasped. They were at Point Needle. The river was deep and cold. The tide was getting more energetic now, and it was starting to slowly carry him away. He was hanging by a thread.

"Because. You are endangering my position as medicine cat. I was always there for you. Have you ever asked if I was okay? Everything is always about you." She snarled, throwing his claws off. He sank into the water, bubbles escaping from his mouth. He stared down at the sand, swaying along with the tide's force.

His eyes sting and burned from the water, but he didn't care. The deathberry juice seemed to flow away from the water's strong force. He closed his eyes. Why shall the world be so cruel? His own sister did that. He felt deep regret. He was going to die now. He would be free, but not from deep regretting pain from his sister.

Love is a sickly thing that masks hatred.

It was true. He believed it now. It was clear. Goldenpaw pretended to love him. It masked her hatred.

Love is a sickly thing that masks hatred. Love is a sickly thing that masks hatred. Love is a sickly thing that masks hatred. Love is a sickly thing that masks hatred. Love is a sickly thing that masks hatred. Love is a sickly thing that masks hatred. Love is a sickly thing that masks hatred.

It went on in his head, spinning around. He felt another cat's thought fluttering to his mind. He always lived in other cat's pasts. He wondered if Amberstar would be his next.

Duskstar was out by the river, the wind blowing her fur back. Murder ruined her life. Fear was powerful and strong, but her own loved ones feared her. It made her...sad. She couldn't be. But killing them was hard. Everyone had someone.

Duskstar had no one.

She had walked alone for quite some time now. She was stuck living in the past, never the future. Everything was just a silly game now. Why was the world awful? Nobody ever believed her, not even when she was innocent. Why? Duskstar closed her eyes, recalling the rhythm of her mother's humming.

Duskstar opened into reality's cold, unwelcoming presence. She only ever loved Willowheart and Redspark. They were a threat to her. She had to kill them. They got in her way. They were both walking in the forest, talking and laughing. Until they brought her up, she listened intently." She's out of her mind. Killing two Clans? Scary." Her brother mumbled." Agreed. I'm...scared. Of her. She's insane. Like Dawnstar." Her mate mumbled. Her brother agreed." I love her, I do. I just...don't like her. You know?" He tipped his head." I don't love her anymore." She meowed. Willowheart sighed and stared ahead. Duskstar's heart ached with pain, and she lunged at them. The branches of the bush settled fine after the left them. Willowtail screeched at Duskstar gave her a quick, painful death.

She stared at her brother, maroon and vermillion staining her teeth and muzzle. Just a large clump of bright scarlet was on each of her paws. Redspark stared in shock at his sister." Redspark...you can live if you work for me." She rasped." Together! One day. Just one, we will have full control of all." She rasped, trying to convince him. He stared at her." Are you out of your mind? No!" He frowned. No. She always hated that word. It spoke against her wishes." Very well, brother. Love is a sickly thing that masks hatred."

"Love is real. If you felt it, then maybe you wouldn't be here. Like me and Bluerose and Silentkit, Mousekit and Hawkkit." Redspark murmured." Oh? You will reunite with them soon. I'll just finish off your kits." She purred. Redspark screeched of fury and lunged at her. Duskstar never thought she would feel so dazed.

She stared at her brother, numb from shock. She hissed and thwacked him back. He screeched as she shredded open the left side of his face. Arteries and veins snapped, she even got to his gums. They bled, exposed to open air. She dug her claws into his neck, trying to snap his vocals. She scraped off chunks of his flesh. She giggled as she choked on his own blood. She flung out plenty of his veins and arteries. She stared down at him.

He stared up at her tauntingly, as if asking her questions. His eyes twitched and he continued to gurgle. After a while of suffocating and in pain, his eyes froze in place. He stared helplessly at her, until all the brightness in his eyes drained out. Duskstar regretted it for a moment, then turned back. She walked back, ignoring the crimson on her muzzle." Duskstar?" Her deputy, Rosethorn asked. Duskstar slashed at her throat, tearing it open. Many cats screeched of shock. She moved to the medicine cat, Blossomgaze. She easily bit her throat. She then moved to the three kits.

Mousekit, Hawkkit and Silentkit stared at her." Auntie?" They asked. Duskstar hissed and grabbed Silentkit. She scraped her eyes and threw her across the camp. She sneered and laughed.

How funny it was.

She then grabbed Hawkkit, smashing his head on the floor. She flung him away. She stared at Mousekit. She stared back, but not with fear.

But anger.

This was the first time in years Duskstar felt fear. She shook her head to clear it, excusing her as a harmless kit. Mousekit squeaked and but her. Sharp teeth, but Duskstar bit her throat. The camp gasped at her, and she left. What did she have there? She frowned as she left for AmberClan. She washed off herself, going to it. Amberstar was out hunting with two other she-cats.

Perfect.

Duskstar lunged, clinging her claws into the two other she-cat's throats. She then turned to Amberstar as they were choking and gurgling. She lunged, and Amberstar screeched. She tore out her throat, and it was a dark maroon. Amberstar fell on the ground before breathing again. Duskstar tore her belly open, waiting for her to breathe again.

Nothing.

She frowned at this, then tossed her into the river. Duskstar walked back to camp. Plenty of cats stared at her in confusion. She did a duel with a cat that also wanted to be leader. The other two cats were medicine cat and deputy she killed, which was good. Duskstar gave the cat a nice, clean death before smiling at her new Clan. It was so easy.

She just has to drive them by fear.
