Chapter Twelve
Axel's POV
We started walking once I woke up. Jessie and Petra were apparently the first ones awake, according to Lukas anyway.
Jennifer was leading the way with Olivia at her side, both of them talking about who knows what.
Chapter Twelve- Getting Along
"Ugh. I can't believe Olivia is talking to her." I growl, making Lukas roll his eyes.
He smoothed over his blond hair before setting his helmate on his head.
Despite our fighting, I was glad Lukas joined the order, having another guy around was good.
"Seriously dude? We need someone to get through to our Wolfy guide over there. If she's the one that's doing that you're gonna have to get over it." He says simply, eyes drifting around the area.
We had made it past the forest quickly, and were now in a field or sorts.
It was nice, Jessie seemed to like the amount of sun shining down on her.
That didn't stop the shivering though.
"Seriously? You're okay with Olivia even talking to her? How do we even know we can trust her?" I ask, making him grumble under his breath about something.
"Because, she's the only way we can save Jessie." He snaps, making my eyes widen.
Apparently he was annoyed with me.
I rolled my eyes and left it alone, watching the group in front of us.
Petra was standing on the side of the shadows, while Jessie was bathed in full sunlight, looking happy to have some heat.
I barely heard what they said from time to time.
"D-do you think that being burning hot will lbs the same or different?" Jessie chatters, making Petra shrug.
"I wouldn't know. I hate the cold, its the worst. All that snow? Ugh." She grumbles, making Jessie laugh lightly.
It was nice to see the two of then trying to keep their minds on something fun.
Their conversation turned into snowball fight talk when my stomach started to growl.
"Uh... Can we stop and get some grub?" I ask, making all Keyes turn to me.
Jennifer looks up, seeing the sun high in the sky.
"Fine. We eat then we leave. So get finding." She growls, plopping down into the grass.
Olivia snorts, watching as I glare at her.
"Okay, that's it. You two go find the food. We will sot here." She states, crossing her arms.
I already knew there was no arguing, but I didn't like it.
Jennifer didn't seem to like the idea much either.
"What?! Why?" She objects looking up Olivia with a pleading glance.
She shakes her head.
"Because were all tiered of you two arguing! Notch knows Jessie doesn't need that sort of thing right now." She scolds.
We both looked over at Jessie, who was shivering in the grass, unable to look me in the eye.
Petra rolls her eyes.
"Just go find food, come back. You don't even have to speak to each other." The redhead groans, making Jennifer get up.
"Whatever." She grumbles, heading away from the group, "You coming rock head?"
I fume, storming after her.
The chuckles of my friends behind us, we head through the grass, silent as we searched for something we could actually eat.
There were pigs that I could see Jennifer eyeing, but they were off limits after Reuben...
Best not to think about it.
"We should have gotten apples in the forest." She growls, flattening her ears to her head.
"For once I think I agree." I spit, glaring over at her.
She stops, making me do the same.
We turn to face each other, her arms crossed over her chest.
"What's your problem with me? What did I ever do to you?" She asks, golden eyes filled with distaste.
I scoff.
"Ha. Like you don't know! I don't trust you at all! This Master bull is cute, thinking you can fool us all. But I'm smarter than that." I state, making her grit her teeth.
"The Master is real, just like the Wither Wolves." She seeths.
Again, I roll my eyes.
"Yeah. 'Wither Wolves'. Whose to say you didn't do that too?!" I shout, giving my best glare now.
She bares her teeth, showing off the pointed tips.
That had to have been the worst mistake I had made in a while.
Continuing to push her after that gesture.
"The wither wolves are things I cannot control. I may be able to communicate with them, but not control. They move mostly of their own free will. The other part comes from The Master's orders." She attempts to stay calm.
I snort, shaking my head.
"Right. Who can control untamed wolves? You're lying, and this is all just a scam to get us all into some stupid trap." I accuse.
Her eyes widen.
I struck a nerve.
"I am not a liar!" She snaps, costs clenching.
A smirk plays across my lips as I cross my arms.
"Sure you aren't. Why don't you just go back to your Master little dog." I tease, lightly fliching her ear.
That put it over the edge.
Her growl, something that made me jump slightly.
Her eyes were dark, almost literally, and her teeth bared in a snarl.
"Never. Call. Me. A. DOG!" She snaps, leaping at me.
I scramble backwards, feeling the impending doom of this situation all too clearly.
"Whoa!" I shout when she takes a swipe at me with claws I didn't know she had.
Her ears flattened to her head, almost glued there, while her tail swished in time with her steps perfectly.
She looked exactly like expected a half-wolf to look.
Like a wild animal you hit while mining by accident.
"Jennifer!" I shout, trying to get through to her normal self.
Her eyes stayed dark, a hint of a purple glow in them.
"Jennifer's not here right now." She growls quietly, in a much deeper voice than before.
My eyes widen.
There was only one way I could see getting out of this.
"Okay... Well then you force me to do something I really don't want to do!" I say, unable to force calm into my voice as she stares up at me.
Her eyes follow me carefully as I sidestep around her, pretending to pull out a sword before turning on my heels and bolting back towards the group.
I could hear her chasing me, but I didn't stop.
Not until I saw the others.
"Axel? Did you find any food?" Olivia asks, making me shake my head, gasping as I held her by the shoulders.
"No! But she did!" I gaps, pointing to where I thought Jennifer was.
She steps out of the grass, holding her head in pain.
"Ugh, bloody hell." She mutters, shaking her head.
Olivia tilts her head to the side.
"I.... Don't get it." She states simply, going over to the girl.
Luaks was staring at me with a raised eyebrow, looking confused as to why I was afraid.
"Seriously Axel? We don't need this sort of joke right now." Petra glares, rubbing Jessie's arms to keep her as warm as she can get with the cold front rested over her form.
I gaped as Olivia helped her to the ground, letting her rest her head onto her shoulder.
"But..." I trail, watching as she stares up at me, a looking her eyes.
She looked as confused as everyone else.
Meaning one of two things.
She was either a great actress, or she really didn't remember what just happened.
Either way, something was up here.
"Your head, its burning up. I don't think I like the idea of you traveling right away." Olivia mutters, making Jen shake her head.
"I don't fancy it much either, but we don't have much time as it is. We should keep moving." She mutters, pushing herself to her feet.
As she passed me she looked over at me, and in her eyes....
There was something I would never forget.
Something that made me realize she wasn't lying about any of it.
There were black skulls in her eyes.
