Chapter 9: A Hole That Leads To Chaos
"Okay tell me why there's a hole inside of a bigger hole." Arine yelled, the sound of rocks deafening.
"I don't know!" Marvin yelled back.
"You couldn't tell me earlier that they existed here?"
"How was I supposed to know we'd fall here after a fail of powers?"
Their descent was long, which meant that the hole was big in depth. Arine tried to push away the fear of getting back to the castle.
Finally, Marvin landed on the ground on his shoulder and Arine landed on top of him, rolling over away from him. They groaned and rubbed the places they had fell on.
"How do we get out of here now?" Marvin grumbled.
"I don't know. It looks like 2 amateurs can't properly teleport." Arine said bitterly.
"I'm not an amateur!" Marvin protested. "I'm just drained of energy by staying somewhere with no power source..."
The rest of his words died down when new voices aroused in the distance. Footsteps could be heard too.
"Who's there?" Marvin whispered.
"Not sure," Arine touched her watch. "But we'll find out."
Arine and Marvin stood up and followed the voices. It seemed as if there were a group of people, around 5-10.
"Who would even be here?" Arine wondered aloud.
Marvin shrugged, showing equal confusion.
They continued to wander around, until a loud, clear voice could be heard.
"The Graydown must be here," a snarky voice, which Arine knew only belonged to Harris, said. "That little Thorne girl went here, so he's here."
Arine grabbed Marvin's arm and steered him towards a nearby wall.
Marvin wriggled out of Arine's tight grasp when they hid behind a wall. "What's wrong?"
"Rose-Grayen guards." Arine growled.
"Uh...who?" Marvin wrinkled his nose.
Arine turned to him. "Rose-Grayen is my Kingdom. These are the guards who tried to stop me when I tried to find you. And among them is one I despise the most; Harris."
Arine walked closer to the guards, peering at them. She saw the crisp gray and black suits of the guards, and the blue and yellow noble suit of Harris.
"Sir, Arine Thorne is pinpointed at this part of the map, though we cannot find her there." a guard said to Harris.
"Then perhaps we haven't looked far enough," Harris said slyly. "Scatter around and find them!"
The guards separated to groups and began searching for them. Arine motioned for Marvin to hide further into the wall.
"We can't let them find us." Arine whispered angrily.
"Are they going to use me to fix the season?" Marvin asked worryingly.
"They will use you to fix the season," Arine's voice trembled. "And then they will kill you. The King wants you dead."
Marvin winced.
"And it just so happens to be that the King is my father. And Mr I'm-Horrible-Harris wants to be loyal to the King."
Marvin said nothing.
"There she is!" a guard yelled.
Arine and Marvin screamed and tried to run the other way when another guard blocked them.
Both guards grabbed Arine and Marvin, separating them from each other.
"Let. Me. Go!" Arine grunted.
"Oh we will," the guard holding Arine taunted. "After our master has both of your heads."
"What?" Marvin gasped.
"Since when was Harris your master?" Arine spat, ignoring the guard's threat.
"Since the King chose me." Harris said, with superiority in his voice.
Arine shoved the guard with her elbow and looked straight at Harris's hazel eyes. "Why would the King ever choose you?"
"It's such a long story, little Thorne," Harris yawned dramtically. "I'm afraid we don't have much time to explain now, do we? Especially when the guards are about to get you."
As Arine's guard was about to grab her again, Arine reached for Marvin. Marvin kicked at his guard's knee, and the guard let out a howl. Marvin took Arine's hand as Arine closed her eyes and imagined somewhere in the hole, somewhere they could be later.
They teleported to a place where guards were nearby, though they didn't seem to notice the two of them.
"You really think it's a good idea to do this now?" Marvin whispered, exasperated.
"Well we escaped them. These teleporting powers perform significantly less in times of need." Arine whispered back.
"They don't perform significantly less, it's just that you're powers are significantly less powerful than mine. Also, it's Time Travel, not teleportation."
"Very helpful, Mr I-Have-No-Energy-Or-Power." Arine snorted.
"Do you just make names for people?"
"Where are they!" Harris's voice boomed.
Both Arine and Marvin spun their heads to see him on the opposite corner from them.
"Him again," Marvin grumbled. He picked up a rock. "Think I could hit them with a rock?"
"I would love to hit Harris with rocks," Arine smiled. "But we'll need to learn some information from him or his guards first."
"Then Time Travel us over there. We can travel somewhere where it's absolutely horrible to go to."
Arine nodded, smirking.
They joined hands and Arine thought of the place where Harris was with his crew. Soon enough, when she opened her eyes, they were facing the Rose-Grayen guards and Harris.
"Get them." Harris growled.
Marvin quickly threw a rock at Harris. Harris barely missed it and it flung to a wall, falling to pieces. The guards, Arine and Marvin were shocked by it, blinking at each other. Marvin threw another one, this time at another guard, making his bow and arrows fall down.
The guards then recovered from their shock and started to attack them. Marvin swiftly ducked under a guard's arms and rolled down the ground to grab the fallen bow and arrow. He quickly assembled it and released an arrow at the guard's shoulder. The guard bent down, holding his shoulder.
"Didn't know you learned archery." Arine said when Marvin came up beside Arine.
"Skills have gone rough after a while." Marvin said grinning while releasing an arrow at another guard.
Meanwhile, a guard ambushed Arine from behind, causing Arine to fall down to the ground, face down. She struggled at the guard's weight on top of her.
"Get off me!" Arine snapped, kicking her legs up.
"I don't think so, little princess." the guard said venomously.
"Just leave Marvin and me alone! It's not like he's gonna hurt you unless you do it first."
"Is that really true, Tempus Praestes? One with powers that famish us, devastate us?"
"Wha-what?" Arine said confused.
"It is what you are, aren't you?" the guard goaded her.
"How do you know!"
"Does it really matter?" the guard said slowly, pushing Arine's head back.
"How—why did my father chose Harris to be your master. Or is he lying?"
"Still concerned about that, huh? Well, Harris has shown great bravery and responsibility to find both you and the Graydown boy. The King trusts him and Harris will become a great King once the Graydown is killed and you too..."
Arine let out an angry growl. She wriggled free her right arm with the watch, and lashed the sharp side at the guard's face. The guard put his hands on the place Arine had hit her, freeing Arine. She got up clumsily, and ran to grab Marvin. Marvin was still shooting arrows at the guards who came near him. Arine saw Harris was lying on the floor, an arrow caught at his knee. The sight made Arine pleased.
Marvin looked at Arine curiously as she grabbed him and thought of the hole above them. She used all her concentration on it, thinking of the expansive space, the sky above more clearer than it was now.
"Wow." Marvin said when they had arrived. Arine opened her eyes to see where they were.
"Are we in the hole above?" Arine asked. She looked down and saw the one below, and saw the tiny figures of the guards.
"How'd you do it?" Marvin said teasingly.
"Oh hush," Arine tried to hide a smile. "We're naturalists, remember?"
"Ah yes, we are," Marvin agreed. He was holding the bow and arrow, blood on the tip of the bow. "Now time for new plans to get out of this original hole."
"Arine!" a worried voice called. "Arine, are you there? Are you okay?"
Arine and Marvin looked up. Marvin's face turned to something that resembled remembrance, sorrow, joy, and many other emotions all at once.
"Eden."
