- ❼ - Pity & Lies

I walk to the station under the predicted rain that began to pour over the city. Almost every single person on the street carried an umbrella.

Except for him.

~*~*~

I rushed to the station under the cold droplets of rain that I hadn't prepared for beforehand. I board the train with everyone else, feeling immensely uncomfortable , because my clothes were now damp and I was freezing.

I'm out of work now, and glad to be. It was really awkward having to work near Kougami. I was an intern, basically everyone's assistant and 'everyone' was including Kougami.

He acted professionally but only on the surface, when I turned my back though, I could feel his piercing glare.

Ugh, what a pain.

He looked dead serious, he probably was going to get a lawyer for her case.

Well if it does happen, at least I get to actually be a lawyer for the first time in a while...

I step off on my station and upon exiting, I brace myself for a journey under the water.

I close my eyes tightly, beginning my fast walk for the busy, slippery streets.

As soon as I take a hasten step, I bump into someone.

"Ah-"

"Haruna, you forgot your umbrella this morning." A familiar voice calls out to me.

I was about to apologize to, whom I thought was was stranger. When I open my eyes and look up, it's him.

His long, straight, black hair was held up in a high ponytail, although stray strands lingered in front of his face. I stare into his dark eyes as I part my lips to speak

"Takeshi." I speak his name gently. "Why are you here? Didn't you take on a full day shift today at the hospital?"

I was very surprised. This weather might of been erratic, but seeing Takeshi here was even more so.

"It's my lunch break right now..." He says slowly, pausing for a moment before handing me my umbrella, which I had originally left at home. "Here."

My white and black striped umbrella never felt more special than today. I smiled and took it from him happily. "Thank you." I look down at his other hand which held his lunch sack. "You haven't eaten your lunch yet?"

His head motions no as he looks down at it and back up at me.

"Do you want to eat together at the shelter under the park?" I ask him, wanting to spend more time with him.

He nods with his almost never changing expression. Blank, emotionless.

We got to the park and ate in a comfortable silence. I spoke up occasionally asking about his day and such.

Takeshi doesn't talk much, and if anything the whole time we were together, you could only hear the sound of my one sided conversation and the misty rain. The only sign of response of him where grunts and nods of understanding.

"What time will you be home tonight?" I ask picking up his now, empty lunch box, putting it back in its sack.

"The plan is to leave at 9, but patients don't pick when to come in for emergencies, so you should have dinner without me." He answers in a dull manner, then looks down. "I'm sorry."

"Don't apologize. It's people's lives you're saving, so..." I beam, trying to cover for my disappointment in order to reassure him.

"...." He stands from the bench and stares down at me, bringing up his hand to my cheek, then giving me a peck on the lips. "Thank you."

He takes off after we say our goodbyes, walking into the busy streets of Tokyo.

I unlock the door to the familiar apartment and step in. "I'm here!" I call out.

"Haruna!" I hear multiple youthful, girl voices from inside, along with footsteps running towards the entrance where I stood.

"Haruna!" Two lively girls in their uniform prance towards me and embrace me into a tight hug.

"Woah there-" I stagger to the left and hold myself up with the nearby wall.

"Oba!"

A little boy with sandy brown hair and hazel eyes ran up to me happily, glomping my leg tightly.

"Harue! Yuki! Akane! Don't kill her either!" A gentle voice calls from the kitchen deeper inside the apartment.

"Okay!" The girls call out at once and run back inside. Harue grabbed me by my hand and led me into the warm, and homey kitchen. The scent of freshly baked sweets wafted out of the oven as she opened it.

"Welcome back." She smiles as she puts down the hot tray of sweets, removing her mittens.

"Hanae." I return her smile. "I'm back."

"Haruna Oba, are you going to stay over?" Harue asks innocently looking up at me. I reach for his head and ruffle his hair affectionately. I squat down to meet his eyes as I shake my head 'no'. "No buddy. I have to get home early because, remember Oba has a job now?"

"Ah! That's right," Hanae pipes up after apparently being reminded that I was hired. "How is your new job going? Are you enjoying law work at your new firm?"

Hah, law work. Firm. How comedic.

"Sure. I mean, it's gonna take a while to get used to the environment there and all but I have it under control." I stand back up and give her a plastic smile to cover for my lie.

"I'm glad! Hopefully you get along with everyone there, I know that you can be a little difficult sometimes." She chuckles softly.

~*~*~

"Bye bye Haruna!" The three kids call out from the entrance seeing me out.

"Goodnight!" I wave at them as Hanae closes the door behind her.

"I'll walk you to the station." Hanae finishes strapping on her sandals. "Let's go."

We begin walking under the dark sky, illuminated by the full moon that almost seemed to have claimed the sky, dimming the light that the stars reached out to give.

I begin speaking, to ask about Yuki and Akane. "How are the girls doing in school?" I inquire quietly, approaching the subject with subtle words.

"They're doing much better." Hanae lets out a soft sigh. "There priorities went from focusing on surviving to actually trying to get through school."

My older sister Hanae works at an all girls school as a calculus teacher. She's really devoted to education, and she tries to provide everyone with the opportunity to get one. The girls that stayed with her where a students from another school that she had rescued from the streets.

The girls were forced to get 'undesirable' or as many people see it 'shameful' jobs, in order to survive. Things like compensated dating and spending time talking to men, as a job...

A lot of the girls do this because the situation is hard at home, and then when the parents find out what kind of jobs these young girls are taking up it brings 'shame' to the family, so a lot of the time, they get kicked out from home, and if kids at school find out, they get isolated from there as well.

So since this country doesn't really have a really good way to deal with this kind of twisted issue, my sister, and a few other teachers formed a small community where these girls can get help.

I have to say, I'm rather proud of my sister.

"That's good. I hope the situation at school is better for them." I comment honestly.

"Yes. Even if it isn't, Harue and I will do our best to keep them from being lonely."

Proud...yet sometimes I envy her.

We arrived at the station and wait for my train to get here.

We stand in total silence for a few moments before my sister's somewhat concerned voice speaks up.

"You didn't really get a job at a new law firm...did you?"

My face loosens up into a lazy smirk. She was right, but she usually never sees through my lies.

Yet I was somehow expecting her to this time.

"What about it then?... This is unusual, you never really read me that well."

"You left your phone on the counter and I saw a text you received earlier. That's all..." She admits.

"Ah well...don't think about it too much. Just make sure our old man or Mom hear about this." I request of her politely. "Please."

"Sure...but I've got to say...you really did make me believe you back there." She giggles nervously to try to loosen up the mood.

I take a deep breath and keep the pitiful smirk I had before.

"What can I say? I'm good at lying." I turn my face away from her. "Sometimes I lie so well, I even fool myself."
