xii; she's finally home
Brittany—
I watched as Nicole slowly walked into the house. After a week of being awake she was able to go home, and here we were.
The only bad thing was that we had to constantly watch her when she was awake; in case she seized. It scared me, honestly. Seeing my sister so helpless when she was the tough one.
Moriah gently laid her hand on my shoulder as I anxiously watched Joel help Nicole into the house. Luckily though, our bedroom on the first floor and fortunately, her doctor educated me on what to do if Nicole ever seized during the night.
"Here, darling, sit on the couch and take a breather." Joel offered, leading Nicole over to the couch in the middle of the living room. Moriah simply grinned, gently squeezing my shoulder.
"Thanks," Nicole muttered, carefully sitting down and soon having Adelina join her. She giggled, gently stroking the cat's coat.
"So," Moriah started, "We're gonna hang out here for a few days, and let you rest up. When your up to it, Joel and I would like to discuss something with you."
Nicole looked up to Moriah, smiled and nodded. "Yeah. Okay."
Joel glanced to me, a sympathetic expression written on his face. I swallowed as he raised his hand, motioning me to follow him as he left to go to the kitchen. With a soft sigh, I did as what was asked of me, and I followed him.
Seeing Joel sitting at the table, I sat down in the seat across from him. For a moment, he didn't sat anything and I could hear Moriah talking softly to Nicole in the other room.
"Brittany, darling, I know this is scary for you, and it's different, but please don't be afraid to come to Mo and I. Okay?" Joel started softly.
"Okay," I nodded.
He smiled, "Good. I also don't want you to feel pressured at all, but everything is changing and coming at us full force. I want you to remember this for the next few months, no matter what happens, Moriah and I still love you."
"I know," I whispered, feeling tears gather in my eyes.
"You're a talented young lady, and we're blessed to have you in our home. Remember that too."
"I will," I sighed, "But why are you telling me this?"
Joel's expression turned from sympathy to concern in a matter of seconds. I could've swore that he sniffled too as he sighed and looked down for a moment. Then he returned his gaze back to me.
"With our family growing, adding you and Nicole to this family, as well as the baby, Moriah and I don't want you to think that we've forgotten you." Joel explained, "We won't forget either of you when that baby comes, but our focus will need to be on the baby too."
"I know, dad." I nodded, "Don't worry. I'll be okay."

That night, we all hung out in the living room, doing our own things.
Moriah sat in the chair, all curled up with her laptop. From what I knew, she was researching baby names. Joel was reading in his bible, like he does nearly everyday if he got the chance too.
Nicole, although told not too, she attempted to read a book that was on Moriah's bookshelf. Because it used so much of her brain, the doctors advised her not to read. However, Nicole was Nicole and did what pleased her. Again, she could be very stubborn.
Nicole looked up from her book, looking faint.
"Britt—" she whispered, her eyes rolling back into her head. Joel jumped up from the couch just in time to catch her before she hit her head on the floor.
I couldn't move; I was frozen.
Joel had rolled her onto her side as she seized and shook uncontrollably. Moriah sat her laptop on the coffee table and got up as well, helping Joel make sure that she never hurt herself.
I knew what I needed to do, I just couldn't get my muscles to move. I had to get over, I couldn't move. She was helpless and I couldn't freaking move to help her.
Once her seizure was over, her body laid limp on the floor, but her chest rose and fell as she breathed. Joel gently smoothed down her hair as he whispered to her softly.
▬▬▬▬▬▬
I sat in my bedroom after the whole situation. My knees were pulled to my chest as I stared at the wall.
I couldn't feel anything, but shame. Nicole was my baby sister and I should've been there for her. I wasn't because I froze. It was scary, and I couldn't get the memories out of my head.
"Brittany, darling?" Moriah called, knocking.
"Yeah?" I replied weakly.
I watched the door slowly open and Moriah peeked her head. She smiled softly at me and slipped in. She sat down next to me on the bed, and gently wrapped her arm around my shoulders.
"You okay, love?" She asked.
I shook my head, "No."
Tears began to well my eyes as I leaned my head on her shoulder. "Talk to me," she whispered, kissing my forehead.
"She's home; she's finally home. The one time she needed me, I couldn't help her." I cried, "Moriah, she needed me and I froze."
Moriah had pulled me closer to her, and held me in a hug as I sobbed. I felt so helpless and so guilty that I couldn't help my little sister.
What kind of big sister am I if I couldn't help her? I didn't understand what God was doing at this moment.
"It's okay, Brittany. Nicole still loves you, we still love you, this baby still loves you, most importantly, God still loves you." She reassured, "We're here, and we're doing this together. We're all in this together. We're gonna struggle, and have our days, but God is still with us. Lean on him."
