x; things better than ice cream
Brittany—
Luke laughed as we walked outside the back of the venue. Apparently, he knew a small business in town that had amazing ice cream.
According to Jude anyway. Luke said this place was Jude's favorite. Therefore, if Jude liked it, then I was definitely trying it.
I looked up, hearing screams of children. Luke smiled, the familiarity of the park in his eyes. He grinned down at me, and gently nudged me.
"That park, me and my brothers would always take our sister there when she young. Libby loved that park." Luke laughed, crossing his arms.
I smiled, "Nicole always talked about that park when she little." I shook my head, "She always told me about a boy there when she five— how they had their first kiss at five under that blue slide."
He chuckled, shaking his head. Laughing quietly as he muttered, kids these days.
I giggled, following uncle Luke as he turned a corner. Luke pointed to small building— similar to a shack. Small, painted with bright colors and had picnic tables surrounding a small area around it.
"This place, Nash Snow & Ice, it's owned by a few of the kids we're neighbors with." Luke started, "Good people, and good ice cream."
I looked up to uncle Luke. For once, I wasn't sad, or scared, or worried that he was my uncle and they'd might leave me someday. I was actually happy that they were my family now. I mean, I missed my parents, but they were loving me as much as parents could.
"Okay, then." I smirked, "What's your favorite flavor?"
Luke hummed, pulling at one of his curls as he thought. He kept walking, him still thinking as we got closer to the shack.
He turned to me just as we got to the window. Laughing, he sent me a wink then turned to the employee.
"How may I help you?"
Luke smiled, leaning his hands on his counters. "Can I get two medium cookie dough ice cream cups?"
"Coming right up," the man smiled.
Two minutes later, Luke smiled at me as he handed me a styrofoam cup with ice cream filling out. Then a spoon was stuck into it.
"Ah. There ya go." Luke nodded, "Best flavor on the menu."
~*~*~
Luke groaned, another child almost hitting him with ice cream. I covered my mouth, attempting to stifle a giggle.
He rolled his eyes and glared at me playfully.
"You love me, Lukey." I grinned, laughing.
"You're lucky, Brittany Lynn. You are so lucky that you're my niece." He muttered.
"Whatever." I shook my head, "I'm not lucky. I'm just really blessed with this family."
"Do you know if you're changing your name? Or will your current one stay?" Luke asked.
"I-I..."
I was interrupted by Luke and his phone ringing. Luke checked it before answering and held up a finger to me, signaling me to be quiet. I nodded
"Hold on, just a moment, darling." Luke paused for a second, "Hello? Luke here." Then again, "Joel, you need to slow down. Oh! Wait! What? You're kidding right, mate? No! Oh, um. Yeah, ten minutes. Tops. No later, I promise, Joel. Alright."
I raised an eyebrow at him as he ended the call.
"Who was that? I mean— is everything okay?" I questioned.
"It was Joel. Something's happened to Nicole, and they need you guys." He answered.
And right there, I feared for the worst. It felt like my world came crashing came at the news that something happened to my baby sister. I couldn't lose another person. I couldn't.
I stood up, "Then we have to go, Luke! Come on. This is my little sister! I can't lose her!"
~*~*~
I rushed into the venue. Luke following behind me. I ran into Joel's arms, nearly in tears.
His arms secured around me, holding me against him. He sighed quietly, smoothing down my hair.
"Sh. Brittany, everything's okay." Joel whispered, "I promise you. They just called again, Nicole's okay."
I sniffled, looking up at Joel. "Is she awake?" I asked, "Is she awake yet?"
Joel smiled, wiping away the tears. He nodded, "She's awake, my dear. Nicole is no longer in her coma. She's awake."
I slowly smiled. I couldn't believe it, she was awake. Finally— after two and a half months.
"T-Then what happened the first time?" I asked, my smile fading and my lip quivering.
Joel's smile even fell and he sighed. He sat down on the edge of the stage and patted the area next to him. I swallowed, but nodded, sitting next to him.
"With the concussion Nicole suffered, she seized. For a while, Nicole's going to suffer with Seizures until the doctors can get that under control." Joel explained slowly, "But she's awake and alive."
