The night had been long. Bondita had been trying vigorously to break open the door when her brain told her that her dead children had once again come alive. These fits would knock a lot of times and Anirudh was now well versed with it.

With his eyes filled with tears of agony, Anirudh looked at the tear strained face of his sleeping Bondita. Her lips were quivering as she mumbled into his shirt. He was holding her close to himself and as he cried, his tears were marked on her face. He wiped the tears away and patted her head gently. Her body shifted closer to his and he stroked her hair.

Destiny loves playing with people. You never know when the next storm will come knocking at your door and will destroy every obstruction in its path of destruction.

With a heavy heart, he heaved a sigh and pecked her forehead lovingly. His eyes reflected his pain on seeing his beloved wife in such a pathetic condition. Should he start doubting on God?

The night passed but he remained awake as he stared at her innocent face.

---------

It was 10 in the morning when Bondita fluttered her eyes open. She was in deep slumber and now her eyes were slightly heavy. She didn't remember anything that happened last time. It was usual for her to forget everything that she would do at night.

She sat up on the bed and looked around to find her Pati Babu reading the newspaper as he sat on the couch with his legs crossed. He was deeply engrossed in reading it with his eyes scanning every bit of it through his spectacles.

Her child like innocence wanted him to notice her. Kids would generally want the people they love to notice them without any effort. This was what Bondita wanted but when she saw him not responding, her lips formed a pout and she frowned.

He stood up from the couch, his eyes not leaving the newspaper even for a single moment.

Bondita hopped down from the bed and frowned.

Anirudh was so much engrossed in reading the newspaper that he didn't realise when Bondita came running to him, colliding with his body as she embraced him tightly. Anirudh took a few steps back as he instinctively wrapped his arms around her. The newspaper crumpled between their bodies and he chuckled. Bondita was giggling and he adored her, stroking her hair gently.

He pulled back and cupped her face. She was smiling joyously, her innocent mind planning some mischief.

She told him," I will play with crayons today!"

As soon as she said that, she started rushing out of the room but Anirudh held her wrist and pulled her back.

She frowned yet again,"Pati Babu!"

He smiled and stroked her hair lovingly. He loved her so much.

He looked into her eyes and said,"Bondita, good kids always take a bath. Are you not a good kid?"

Bondita nodded her head and he smiled at her.

Bondita was not normal, she needed special attention and care. Anirudh took care of every single thing, from assuring her hygiene to feeding her food with his hands, from getting her hair done to putting her to sleep.

Bondita collected her saree from the cupboard and jumped, to which Anirudh chuckled. She went inside the washroom and closed the door behind.

Anirudh sat back on the couch, smiling to himself. Even if his Bondita was not her usual self, even if she was not sane anymore, she was his everything. She was the reason why he was alive even after losing his children. He breathed because she was breathing. He lived because she was living. The memories of that day haunted him and made his soul shiver but when his eyes would land on Bondita's smiling face, he'd forget all his worries.

He was suddenly brought out of his thoughts when he heard Bondita scream. As fear gripped him, he ran straight towards the washroom and banged on the door as he yelled," What happened, Bondita? Are you alright? "

His heart thumped inside his chest and he felt his body turning limp with each moment that passed.

Without wasting more time, he with lot of attempts broke the washroom door and immediately rushed inside.

His heart wrenched when his eyes finally landed on his Bondita. She was kneeling down against the washroom wall. She was in a puddle of blood, her undone saree barely covering her body. Her lips were quivering and she was crying continuously. She was mumbling things to herself. She had herself curled up in the nook of the washroom. Her face was laced with tears.

Anirudh felt his blood turning cold at the sight. He hastily rushed to her aid, kneeling down besides her. He examined her body completely as he tried to find any wound that could've caused the bleeding. His eyes were filling up with tears. When Bondita realised his presence, she threw her arms around him, clenching his white shirt tightly as she sobbed against his chest. He held her to himself as her saree slipped down completely. She was wailing in his chest.

He realised her plight. It was menstruation.

He heaved a sigh of relief. She was not physically hurt but it was the time of her menstrual period. Bondita's mind was as innocent as that of an eight year old kid. Though she would bleed every month, but each time she'd get scared. It was the menstrual blood that had mixed with the water on the washroom floor, painting it completely red.

She clenched his shirt tightly as she struggled the words out," I am bleeding again. I will die soon!"

As soon as those words left her mouth, Anirudh's eyes widened. He cupped her face in his palms and stared into her innocent eyes. His own courage was slipping away when he saw her beautiful eyes filled with fear.

Braving his tears, he said softly," Don't ever say that, Bondita. I'm here with you."

He pushed the hair away which covered her face.

Bondita felt as if she would die.

She stammered," This is bad! I stained you too."

She looked at his clothes which were covered with her blood now.

She clasped the front of his shirt tightly and said," Bondita is bad, she is as dirty as filth. Your little Bondita bleeds every month. Dugga Maa punishes her, no one loves her."

She started to wail loudly and Anirudh's heart broke to a million pieces. What was she taking about? He hugged her tightly and patted her head.

He told her softly," Bondita, no one punishes you. You are not dirty. See through my eyes, you are the purest soul I know."

"Why do I bleed?" she asked, her puffy red eyes staring into his dark ones.

Wiping his own tears with the edge of his thumb, he said," Bondita, I already explained it to you last month. Do you remember? This is important for the growth of girls. A girl who bleeds isn't dirt or filth but she is as beautiful as the vibrant and fragrant rose. And most importantly, it's how a woman becomes a moth--"

Mother.

His words died down in his throat as he remembered how he should not say this word in front of his Bondita. The hollowness resurfaced in his heart and he felt his blood freeze when he saw flashbacks. A lone tear trickled down his face.

He felt a tug on his clothes which made him look at Bondita who was still crying. She looked at him and his heart broke seeing her vulnerability. Why was it so hard?

Bracing all the agony that this fate had inflicted on him, he would often smile. But deep down, this hollowness appeared to eat him up. He never showed his plight to the world.

Heaving a sigh, he stroked her hair before placing a gentle kiss on her forehead.

The fear was evident in her eyes and she was not letting him go. He saw the bucket filled with water on the side. His one arm was wrapped around her shivering frame and he used the other to fill a mug of water. He brushed her hair gently as he poured the water on her head slowly and it appeared as if her pain and fear was subsiding with every drop of water that fell on her body.

She was incredulously looking at him like a baby and just like a mother who makes her child bath, Anirudh cleaned her body with his hands. Bondita still hadn't let him go and Anirudh knew that her weary heart and mind needed him there. It was not the first time that he had been washing her body, there were several other days when he had helped her. Whenever she would be scared of anything, he'd come to her aid.

There was not an iota of desire that he felt when he was cleaning her. It was selfless love.

He smiled as he saw her coming back to her normal self, the fear that had been gripping her was slowly getting away. As he finished cleaning her, he stood up and in a moment, he was back with a towel.

He wrapped the towel around Bondita who was shivering. He held her shoulders firmly from her side and she pouted her lips.

She frowned," I don't like taking a bath."

He chuckled and kissed her temple. She was still shivering. He took a quick glance at his own self and realised that his clothes were wet, all stained red. Bondita had been gripping him tigthly throughout.

He held her hand and helped her out. After coming out of the washroom, he immediately made her sit on the bed and took out another towel and wiped her hair. She tried getting up, she was excited all over again but he couldn't let her go out like this, just wrapped in a towel.

It took him a lot of effort to dress her up completely, ensuring that she was comfortable during her menstrual period. He made sure she was comfortable.

As he finished dressing her up, he saw her clapping her hands and jumping all around the room. He smiled and he adored her. She had forgotten about her pain, her eyes gleamed with joy and she rushed outside whilst Anirudh sneezed.

He looked down at himself , he was still drenched in water. He heaved a sigh and exhausted, sat down on the floor itself.

-------------------------

Anirudh was working in the kitchen. He was making a hot rice pack to reduce his Bondita's pain. He was was an expert in this now. In his initial attempts, the needle would often prick his finger but he would never get bothered about it.

He finished making it and placed it on the side. He was lost in thought. He shoved his hand in his pocket and took out the silver pendant that he used to carry with him all the time. It was in the shape of the English alphabet 'A'. It belonged to his little daughter. He would often adore it in solitude. He clasped it tightly and he felt his heart skipping a beat. He could hear her sugary voice, it was resonating in his ears. His eyes were pooling up.

He would often feel his little children caressing his face with their tiny hands when the evening breeze would flutter. He could feel them around himself but alas! He couldn't hold them in his arms and kiss them.

He put the pendant back into his pocket. He took a deep breath and wiped his tears.

Suddenly, he felt two arms engulfing him in a back hug. He chuckled lightly and held her hands.

He turned around and found Bondita smiling at him and just by looking at her beautiful face, all his worries seemed to fade. All his pain seemed to go away.

"Come play with me, Pati Babu. You know, my doll, she is not eating anything. I'm sure she will eat once you yell at her." she said innocently, taking his hand in hers.

She pulled him with her but he pulled her back to himself making her pout. She was frustrated.

He smiled at her and said," If my doll doesn't eat anything, how would she feed her doll?"

Bondita raised her eyebrows at him and said," Who is your doll?"

She laughed and he adored her.

She said, poking his chest," Adults don't play with dolls."

Anirudh said softly," You are my doll, Bondita."

Bondita frowned at him. How could she be a doll? She was about to say something when he interrupted her.

He lifted her up from her hips and placed her gently on the kitchen table.

Her curious eyes were wandering here and there, all over the place. He then came in front of her with a plate of food and her eyes widened. She didn't want to eat, she wanted to play. She had to make arrangements for her doll's wedding and she had no time to waste.

Anirudh took a morsel of food and he was very well aware of the fact that Bondita didn't want to eat but he was adamant. He could never compromise with her health.

She tried getting down but Anirudh didn't let her. She shook her head in a no and Anirudh smiled internally.

"Pati Babu.." she mumbled, looking into his eyes innocently, expecting him to listen to her plea.

Anirudh controlled a giggle and said sternly," Bondita.."

She gave him an irritated look. Just as she opened her mouth to further protest, he stuffed her mouth with a morsel of food. She whined yet again as she chewed. Anirudh was trying hard to suppress a giggle, he knew that if he giggled, she'd get irritated more and he will be having a hard time controlling her.

He fed her like a baby.

-------------------

Anirudh was sitting down on the couch with his face in his palms. His study was being destroyed right in front of his eyes and he couldn't do anything about that. He looked at Bondita who was now ruffling through law books. She couldn't understand the text and she scratched her head.

When he saw her scanning the law books incredulously, it reminded him of the days when she practiced as a barrister, his Barrister Babu Bondita. It pained to see her like that. As a barrister, she would stay up late for numerous nights to prepare for her cases and he would always be there to support her.

Presently, his eyes were on the woman who was once a fiesty barrister, so capable and fearless. She had worked hard to get her degree. But now as he saw her in such a state when she couldn't even help herself let alone other women, he felt a pang in his heart. It pricked him. He heaved a sigh and looked at her naive face. Her hands ruffled the pages and it appeared as if she liked this game. She clapped her hands and turned the pages again.

At once, she looked at him with a glint in her eye and he smiled at her.

His law books were scattered all around and his study was a complete mess. Before sleeping, Bondita would always destroy his study and it would take him hours to arrange it back.

After a few moments, he realised that Bondita had slept on the floor itself. She was exhausted. Her little frame was curled up on the floor.

Anirudh moved forward towards her and knelt down and observed her face which was devoid of all the tensions of this world. A small smile lingered on her face and she was sleeping peacefully.

He cautiously picked her up in his arms, her head leaning on his chest as he whispered, " I love you, Bondita."

Though destiny had played a dirty game with both of them, but he knew that if Bondita was by his side, he could fight even death.

She was his eternity.

Meri kismat ke har ek panne pe
Mere jeete ji baad marne ke
Mere har ik kal har ik lamhe me
Tu likh de mera usey
Har kahaani me saare qisson me
Dil ki duniya ke sacche rishton me
Zindagani ke saare hisso mein
Tu likh de mera usey
Aye khuda
