I honestly wasn't aware of how long we had been driving though. The only thing I knew was that it was almost morning again. There was the possibility that I had spent the entire ride trapped in a daze or just staring out the window as the world passed me by. I actually could have been sleeping for all I knew, but I wasn't positive and at the moment I wasn't particularly worried about it.
We drove through a neighborhood and passed a bunch of houses. Men, whom I assumed to be Epps's reinforcements, all piled into different vehicles and followed closely behind us. We soon entered a tunnel and I was surrounded by darkness once again while Sam was busy rummaging through his bag and Epps tossed his phone onto the dashboard. I hadn't a clue what was wrong.
"We had a signal earlier. It's not working now," he stated. Sam threw his phone onto the dashboard as well.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
"There's no signal anywhere," Sam answered me.
The morning light burst through the car windows as we exited the tunnel, but I was far more concerned at the sight in front of me. Dozens of vehicles were overturned in the street and some were even on fire and sat on top of hills of soot; people stood at the sides of the street with tears in their eyes and pained expressions on their faces while others ran for their lives or laid dead. Buildings were either completely destroyed or on fire. The entire city was in ruins. I hadn't seen anything like it before in my life. Egypt didn't even compare to this.
"Oh my gosh," I whispered as the screams of children flooded through my ears.
The sight only got worse and worse as we drove further and the only thing I could see in the sky were numerous alien ships. Epps came to a stop after we were further into the city and we got out, our eyes never leaving the destruction in front of us. Soon enough, we started walking but I was really skeptical about how far we were going to make it. By the looks of this, we'd probably be dead within the hour, and honestly, I was okay with it. Epps ran ahead of us and crossed a railroad track before climbing up onto a ruined structure. He turned around to speak, but before he could, the sound of fighter jets roared in the air.
Startled, I looked up to see three fighter jets making their way into the city but they were stopped short as two alien ships took them out with just a few shots. The only thing I could do was watch.
"We came here to find her in the middle of all that?" Epps shouted down to us.
"Are we really going out there Epps?" one of his men asked from behind me.
"I'm not going in there," another retorted.
"No one's going in," Epps countered.
"I am. With or without you I'll find her," Sam said as he began walking. I ran to catch up with him.
"You're going to get yourself killed. Is that what you want? You came all the way out here to get yourself killed," Epps chided as he appeared behind us. He grabbed Sam but Sam quickly yanked away from him.
"She's here because of me, do you understand?" He started walking again and I groaned.
"Listen to me. You go in this building, that's if she's even still alive, there's no way you're going to be able to reach her," he informed the stubborn boy.
Sam shot around to look at him. "What do you suggest I do?"
Epps sighed and I walked over to stand beside him. "It's over. I'm sorry, but it's over."
I went to respond but I was cut off by a loud scream behind me. "Incoming!"
I heard two shots being fired but before I could even make sense of what was happening , Epps was pulling me with him. More and more shots sounded which caused the ground to tremble beneath our feet. Epps, Sam, and I fell to the ground before quickly getting up again only to be knocked back down by an alien ship overhead. My breath caught in my throat as a ship passed just barely a foot above my head. It idled above our heads for a few moments before rising again. My heart was beating frantically as the ship turned around to finish us off, but more shots sounded, two of them hitting the ship's engine. A malfunction caused one of the ship's guns to fire at the ground and I screamed and covered my head as the ground exploded in front of us. The ship then spun in the air before finally landing on the ground. I looked up enough to see that a Decepticon was now busting its way out of the ship, fierce snarls escaping its form. I pushed my upper half off of the ground with my arms and just continued to watch it until I heard a gun being cocked behind me. I turned around quickly, as did Sam, and nearly collapsed again from the sight standing in front of me.
"We will kill them all," Optimus Prime's deep voice sounded.
No fucking way, man.
Car engines sounded and I turned my head again to see three very familiar race cars transforming. They immediately strolled over to the struggling Decepticon and began ripping it apart, no hesitation whatsoever. I was still having a hard time processing exactly what the fucking fuck was going on here.
Sam stood up and grabbed my hands, pulling me up with him to face Optimus. I held on tightly to his arm as the Autobot leader spoke.
"Your leaders will now understand. Decepticons will never leave your planet alone and we needed them to believe we had gone, for today in the name of freedom, we take the battle to them."
I immediately shifted my attention around him to see the rest of the Autobots rolling in, including Ironhide. Ironhide and Bumblebee immediately transformed, wasting no time at all to make their way over to Sam and I. Honestly, I just couldn't believe my eyes and I had a hard time believing this anyway. I watched their ship blow up; there was no possible way they could have survived that. I was probably on the brink of a permanent mental lapse. That had to be the only other explanation.
"You see them too, right?" I whispered to Sam. He nodded and I turned to face Optimus. "We saw your ship blow up," I stated.
"The ship. We were never in the ship. We designed the damn thing didn't we?" Topspin replied. I turned my head to look at him and the other two wreckers.
"We were hidden in the first booster rocket to separate. We splashed down back in the Atlantic just as planned. We ain't going nowhere," Leadfoot retorted.
I turned back around to face the two Autobots in front of me. "Are you sure I'm not just going mentally insane?" I mumbled.
Ironhide grunted. "Not quite, kid."
I just shrugged and listened to Optimus. "They're surrounding the city to make a fortress so that no one can see what they're up to inside. Our only chance is the element of surprise."
"I think I know where to look," Sam called.
He ran off towards the downed Decepticon ship and I ran after him, Epps, Bumblebee, and Ironhide following after us. Sam climbed up onto the ship and I stared at him.
"What are you doing?" I asked.
"Shush."
I raised my eyebrows. "Excuse you."
He gave me a look. "Shut up, Lea. I can't concentrate. Bumblebee, Ironhide. Can one of you fly this?" he asked. I looked at the two bots who just shrugged.
"I'm not really the pilot-type," Ironhide retorted.
"So, Bumblebee, you can fly this right?"
"I don't know," he responded as he waved his hands around.
"What is that? So-so?" Sam inquired.
Bumblebee shrugged and I giggled. "I don't know," he repeated.
"Really? So you so-so can fly this? That feels terrible," Sam teased.
I just shook my head. Sam jumped down from the ship and walked over to Epps and I. Epps dug into his bag before taking out two guns, handing one to me and one to Sam.
"We're right behind you. And you, little girl, better keep that ass safe," Epps said. I just nodded and tucked the gun into my jacket pocket before climbing onto the ship.
"Where do you think you're going?" I heard Ironhide say from behind me.
I turned around to face him. "With Sam. Why do you ask?"
"I don't think that's the wisest thing. You could get hurt."
I smirked and backed towards the cockpit opening where Bumblebee and Sam were already waiting inside. "It's nothing that I can't handle. Don't worry, Hide. I love you," I said to him before dropping through the opening.
"Are you ready?" Sam asked me.
"Yes," I answered him.
Bee whirred happily.
"Let's roll."
Soon enough, we were flying through the air, off to Trump Tower to retrieve my best friend and Sam's girlfriend. All sense of hope and fullness had returned to me in such a short amount of time. The Autobots were back and I could tell just by the determination and sternness in Optimus's voice that once the Autobots were done here, the Decepticons were going to wish they had never stepped one mechanical foot on planet Earth.
