Out On the Town

Washington D.C. was busy like it normally was this time of day. Hundreds of different people bustled through the streets attempting to get their errands taken care of before the day came to an end. It was almost comical to watch.

Today had been a rather fantastic day for me, and it wasn't even over yet which made me happier. Nate and I enjoyed a nice lunch at Olive Garden, and he even paid like he said he would, no matter how many times I protested against it. I was just so used to my parents giving me money all the time so I could pay for myself, so this was different. I'd be lying if I said it wasn't nice though. I loved the fact that he was that nice.

Hanging out with someone else besides my family was a big relief though. I loved my family, and I loved hanging out with them, but it was just a nice feeling to be with someone else other than them. The fact that it was Nate just made me love it even more.

The two of us were currently sitting in front of some random chain store. It started raining earlier and it still had yet to stop, so we decided to just hop in the truck and have a nice little chat. Surprisingly enough, the two of us were too busy eating at Olive Garden to talk about each other's lives or some other shit like that, but oh well. It was happening now, so I guess that's what really mattered.

"So, tell me what your family's like?" Nate spoke up.

I looked up from my ice cream cone to see him looking at me.

"Um, my family is really big." Biologically my family was really small, but I counted the Autobots and my mom's close friends as family, and it's been that way since I was born. It wouldn't change anytime soon either.

"Lucky. Mine's really small. My parents are only children and I'm an only child. It's pretty pathetic," he chuckled.

"It's actually not. Biologically my family is really small. I'm an only child, my dad's and only child I'm pretty sure, and my mom's sister died when she was young, so yeah," I replied.

"It's sad to hear about your aunt, but when am I going to meet the people who created such a beautiful being?" he smiled, and I found myself blushing. What was he doing to me?

"Um, soon."

"So, tell me about yourself. I'm quite upset that we've known each other for over a week, yet we know nothing about each other," he chuckled.

"There's not much to tell. I'm seventeen, a junior in high school, and I like trucks, fighting, and big guns," I told him.

He looked at me as if I had just told him someone in his family had died. "Really? I didn't think you'd be the kind of girl to like that kind of stuff."

"Well, my dad and my grandpa are in the military. Plus, my mom is basically a gun freak and she's a trained fighter. I guess it's inevitable," I giggled.

"Where have you been all my life?" he mused, sending me a smile.

I couldn't help but smile back at him. "I've been around. Now tell me about you, hotshot."

"Well, cutie...I'm a sixteen year old junior in high school. I enjoy big trucks or any kind of automobile really. I love going to the shooting range, I take martial arts, I play the guitar, and I was the number one ranked high school quarterback back in Washington state," he told me.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't impressed.

"Seems as if we have quite a lot in common. Aside from the football and playing the guitar, of course," I responded.

"It was meant to be," he laughed. I couldn't tell if he was joking or not, but part of me hoped that he wasn't.

I quickly shook my head, hoping to rid my mind of that thought. He couldn't like me like that, and I couldn't like him like that; I was too different. There was no way he'd ever be able to understand that.

"Um, what's your family like? Like, what do your parents do and stuff?" I asked, trying to get my mind off of whatever it was that I was feeling.

"My dad drives cars for a living, and my mom is a doctor which is why we moved here in the first place. They're very nice people, I guess. My mom is a sweetheart which is why I am, but my dad is kind of a jerk," he told me.

I nodded in understanding.

"What are your parents like?" he questioned.

I pursed my lips. "They're pretty cool. My mom is just like a teenage girl; it's actually kind of weird, but for some reason I love it. My dad is a major grump, but he's very lovable. They're my best friends," I told him with a smile.

"Seems like you have a good relationship with your parents."

"I guess you could say that," I chuckled.

He was about to respond when my phone rang. I groaned and grabbed it out of my bag. It was probably my dad, and looking at the caller ID only confirmed that. I rolled my eyes before answering it.

"What?" I snapped, clearly annoyed that he decided to interrupt such a nice time.

"You'd be wise to watch your tone with me, kid," he growled.

I get it from you, I wanted to say, but thought against it.

I let out a sigh before answering him. "Bite me, dad. What do you want?"

"Your mother would like for you to come home," he told me.

"Do not involve me in this, Ironhide!" I heard a voice yell in the background. It was my mom's.

He grunted. "Shut up, Lea. Now are you coming home or do I need to come get you myself?"

Oh my gosh.

"You wouldn't dare."

"You must not know me as well as you say you do, Kaelyn." I could almost hear the smirk in his voice.

I removed the phone from my ear and looked over at Nate to see him looking at me with an amused expression on his face. I could only assume that my little banter with my father was rather humorous.

"Do you think you could take me home? My dad is being a major dick right now," I inquired.

He laughed and nodded, wasting no time at all to take off down the road. I sighed and put the phone back up to my ear.

"I'm coming. Are you happy now?" I grumbled into the speaker.

"Ecstatic," my brute of a father responded before the line went dead. I groaned and threw my phone back in my bag. Why did he have to be so annoying?

"What happened to 'I have a good relationship with my parents'?" Nate teased.

I laughed. "I do have a good relationship with them, but my dad is so annoying sometimes."

"You're not the only one," he chuckled.

I just smiled in response. The rest of the ride was silent, but it was a comfortable silence. It was kind of hard to feel awkward with him around. He just had that atmosphere about him and I really, really loved it.

"Well, here you are," Nate chimed as he pulled in to my driveway.

I smiled and unbuckled my seat belt. "Thank you so much. I had a really nice time with you today," I told him.

He patted my knee. "And I had a really nice time with you, Kaelyn. I hope we can do it again soon?"

"Of course. I'll see you later," I hummed as I hopped out of the big truck. I sent him one last wave before walking to my front door.

The moment I stepped through I was met by the faces of both my parents. My mom had a pretty happy look on her face, and my father just looked annoyed with existence.

"So, how was your day?" my mom inquired, grabbing me by the shoulders and pushing me into the living room. Had it not been for her tight grip I probably would have fallen from the force she used to shove me through the house.

"It was good," I stammered as she sat me down on the couch. She sat down closely beside me while my father sat in the recliner across from us.

"Did you two kiss? What happened?"

I didn't even have the time to answer before my dad spoke up. "If a yes comes out of your mouth, I can promise you that it will be the last time that little punk ever kisses anybody," he snapped.

I blinked with surprise. "Calm down. We didn't kiss. I mean, I don't even like him like that," I told him. Even I could hear the skeptical tone of my voice, but I just couldn't like him like that.

My mom narrowed her eyes at me. "Are you sure? Your tone indicates otherwise."

I sighed. "Yes. I'm sure."

"You'd better be," dad grumbled.

"Why did I have to come home early though? I was actually having fun spending time with someone other than you and mom," I whined.

"It was getting late."

I made a face. It was like five o'clock in the evening!

"Don't listen to him," mom spoke. "He's paranoid and protective; you know this. Plus, it's the first time you've ever been out with another boy besides Ethan. You really should have seen this coming."

I just groaned. "He's just a friend. There's no need to be so protective, dad."

He grunted. "You're my daughter. There's plenty of need to be protective," he countered.

"At least he actually cares," mom whispered in my ear.

I laughed and got up from my seat. "It was nice chatting with you both, but I think I'm going to head upstairs now. I'll see you for dinner. Bye."

I quickly took off up the stairs and wasted no time in running to my dressers. Soon I was dressed in a pair of my mom's black sweatpants, and another one of my dad-form's shirts. It was pretty funny how the two of them haven't noticed that I've taken their clothes yet. About 96% of my dressers were filled with my parents' shirts and pants.

Once I tossed my old clothes in the laundry basket I ran over to my bed and plopped down onto it, turning my flat screen TV on in the process. A random show on ABC Family was playing, and I was too lazy to change the channel, so I just left it. About fifteen minutes into the program my phone beeped in my bag. I quickly fished it out and unlocked it to see I had a text from Nathan. A smile immediately came onto my face as I read over the typed words.

Nate: I had such a great time with you today, and I really hope that we can hang out again soon. Thank you for making living in Washington DC actually worth it. See you soon, beautiful.

I couldn't stop the fluttering in my stomach, or even the blush on my cheeks, no matter how much I wanted to. The only question I could ask myself was: why the hell was this happening to me?
