Omniscient

The drive on the way to Oakwood was exciting, Joyce and Kyla had multiple conversations about multiple things.

"We're here to see Mekai Andrews" Joyce said to the receptionist at the front desk

"You can't" the receptionist said rudely

"And why not?" Kyla asked, not liking her attitude

"He doesn't want to see you all today. It was his request" she said

"What?" Kyla and Joyce rhetorically asked in unison

In Mekai's room, he was staring at the wall and trying to relax himself. Thinking about being in this place kept him irritated 24/7. At least he was around his dad though, which was somewhat a blessing and a curse.

"Why you not talking to them man?" Clinton, Mekai's dad, walked in the room

"Who?" Mekai pretended he didn't know

"Your mama and your girlfriend dummy" he plucked his head "Sit up"

He sat up and sighed "I don't wanna talk to them while I'm in here, not like this"

"And why not? Clearly they wanna see you, they drove 2 hours to see your black ass" he sat in the chair "And word even got around that your girlfriend almost beat the receptionist's ass" he chuckled

"That's my baby" Mekai smiled, thinking about Kyla's beautiful face

"If that's your baby then why you don't wanna see her?" He crossed his legs in the manly way

"I don't want nobody's pitty, I need to get through this shit on my own. Seeing her right now will only make me miss her even more" he explained

"Kai, I'm gonna spend the rest of my life in this shit hole...the rest of my life, until I die, when the close the lid on my cof-"

"I get it Pop" He interjected

"Like I was saying, I don't have visitation rights anymore, I fucked that up. I don't even get to make a phone call to my family anymore" he explained "The only reason I'm seeing you is because your crazy ass is in here with me"

"Pop I ain't-"

Clinton knew he was about to protest "Nigga you crazy, accept it. Point I'm trying to make is, don't push away the people that love you because you wanna act like some fucking tough guy. Hear me?"

"...I hear you and I appreciate all that" Mekai nodded "But I still don't want no contact with them while I'm here"

Clinton smacked his teeth "And why the hell not?"

"It's not something I'm cool with." He shrugged "Tough guy act aside, it just ain't me"

"I guess I gotta respect that" His father sighed, placing his hand on his shoulder "Dumbass"

"Andrews, get out of his room. You know it isn't allowed" one of the workers came in

"I love you son" Clinton smiled at Mekai "Y'all can suck my dick, I'm conversating with my son!" he shouted, walking out the room

"Love you too Pop" Mekai sat on the edge of his bed

Kyla

"I can't believe he didn't wanna see us" I sighed as we drove through our city

"It's the same thing his father did before he acted a fool and got his visitation rights taken away forever" Joyce shook her head

"Forever?" I asked

"Yeah, no phone calls, nothing." she looked out the window "I keep trying to make myself fall out of love with him, but I can't. He was my everything, next to Mekai of course...now I'm all alone"

Hearing that, made an idea pop into my head "Why don't you have dinner with me and my family tonight?"

"Nah, I don't wanna be in the way. I'm ok" she smiled

"I insist, I'll call my mom and tell her we're having a guest" I picked up my phone

Some nights, I go back home and have dinner with the family, my dad stays in his room the entire time.

"Mama, where you at?" I walked in the house with Ms. Joyce behind me

"In the kitchen" she said as we took our jackets off

"I'd like you to meet Ms. Joyce, Mekai's mom" I introduced them to each other "Ms. J, this is my mom, Sylvia"

"Nice to meet you" they said at the same time

"Where's Cam Bam?" I asked my mom

"She's having a play date at a friend's house"

"Well geez, the lil rascal done went and made other plans" I sat the plates out

"Yeah, so it'll just be us three ladies"

"This is a very lovely home you have" Ms. J complimented

"Thank you. I love your hair, who does it? I've been trying to get mine like that for months" my mom said

"I can give you my hair dresser's number"

"Dinner was great, Sylvia" Joyce said as they had a glass of wine in the kitchen

Kyla was upstairs using the restroom, excited that things turned out great.

"Thank you Joyce" she smiled "And thank you for that little tip when barbecuing chick-"

"Where's my plate?" Eddie, Kyla's father, came in the kitchen

Joyce gasped, dropping her wine glass "You"

"The hell are you doing in my house?" He glared, getting angry

"You are a fucking monster!" She shouted back

"What's going on?" Sylvia asked, completely confused

"He's the man that got my husband sent to the institution! He did it out of jealousy" Joyce was breathing hardly

"How dare you disrespect me in my house?!" He yelled, getting in her face "He deserved everything he got!"

"What's going on in here?" Kyla rushed downstairs, hearing all the commotion

"Your father is a sneaky piece of shit" Joyce explained in her words

"Get out of my house!" He yelled

"Gladly!" She yelled back at him "I'm sorry Sylvia, thanks again for dinner" she said calmly before exiting

"You ruin everything" Kyla rolled her eyes at her father before leaving out to take Joyce back home

"Honey" he tried to touch his wife's arm

"Don't honey me" she jerked away and started cleaning up the wine "Oh and the next time you wanna say 'don't disrespect me in my house', make sure you pay a damn bill or something"

Kyla

"So about you and my dad? What happened?" I asked as we pulled in front of the house

"Your dad is a bitch"

"I already knew that" I chuckled a little

"About 8 years ago, me, your father, and my husband, Clinton, which is Mekai's dad, were all good friends. Your father started becoming jealous of Clinton's success and our marriage. Him and Clinton were the best of friends, so your dad knew about Clinton's mental situation. He became so envious to the point where he started telling people that worked with my husband about his situation and he got fired. Which caused him to go into a downward spiral and he ended up having to get admitted"

"That's ashamed" I shook my head "He's the reason for your husband being in that place"

"I'm surprised you're his child, you must have your mother's genes"

"Thankfully" I said "Does my dad know about Mekai?"

"Mekai used to call him Uncle Eddie, he was like family"

"Uh-huh" I nodded, poking the inside of my cheek with my tongue. Now I know why he always gave Mekai a hard time

"I'll see you later. We gonna try to go back up there next Wednesday, I'll drive" she said, getting out the car

"Alright, thank you and sorry about tonight"

"Don't apologize for his mistakes" she smiled before closing the door
