Chapter 1: The First Sign

L was alone, munching on a piece of cake while gazing at the stars. Although it didn't look like much, this event had very significant meaning. He was celebrating the 3rd year anniversary of Watari's death. The man had died by the hands of Kira, the mass murderer that had taken Japan by storm. L had been on the verge of catching him, but not before Watari's passing. Even now, after 3 more years of searching, L still couldn't avenge all the innocent people Kira killed so ruthlessly. But Kira wasn't much of a threat anymore. Soon after Watari's death, Kira killed 2 more times, then suddenly, he just stopped killing. No more reports of fallen prisoners popped up. It's like... he just... vanished. L never stopped looking though, even after being resigned from the job. Today, however, was not to dwell on Kira's sudden disappearance. It was to honor Watari's services. Putting down his plate of cake, he said a silent prayer, hoping Watari had made it to heaven, and was watching him from above. He thanked him for all the services he had offered to L, how he wouldn't be where he was today if it wasn't for him, and how he thanked him for taking care of him since he was small. He sat there for a little while longer, pondering some other things before he started to pack. Since all he had brought was a plate and a plastic bag, it didn't take him too long to get everything together. Before he walked down the hill, however, he looked up to watch the stars one last time. No sooner had he looked, had he seen the most clichéd thing to happen: A shooting star. "Oh my goodness. Just the way to end a day." L said to himself. He chuckled. "Well? What should I do? It's only natural that I would make a wish, right?" L walked forward, stopping right in front of the moon. He thought the moon was much more ravishing than any shooting star. With that being said, L told his wish to the gray giant glow in the otherwise dark night.
"Dear moon, captor of the night, and stealer of hearts, I ask of you one wish. I want...someone who can interest me and aid me, just like Watari. Of course, I'm not asking for an exact replica, but someone who can challenge me." L laughed. "I won't go into too many details, but yeah, the basics." Concluding his wish, L turned around and began his journey back to the house down the hill he had been sitting on.

Not too long after, about 6 blocks away, Light sat in his living room, contemplating what his wish should be. He was just in time to see the the glowing streak as it soared through the sky. Of course, he couldn't just ignore it. He had to make a wish, because he wouldn't find resolve if he didn't. So he closed his eyes, folded his hands together, and started to wish. "I wish... I could do something interesting again. I've stop being Kira, because I realized that my efforts to create a new world, in the end, has resulted in the death of many innocent people. I... just want someone who can make my life worth living again. Someone who can stop me from ever turning back into Kira. Someone like... L... " He opened his eyes and tears were running down his face. "Why, why, why did I have to leave L?" Light wailed.  He got up, wiped his face, and made his way to his room. He might not have realized, but he had grown extremely fond of L, to the point where it wasn't just fondness, but LOVE, even. Light decided to ponder over what life would bring him once he met the new person who would be interesting.... like L, Ryuzaki, L lawliet..... 'Stop thinking about him!' Light hadn't realized it but he had curled himself into a ball on his bed, sobbing and pulling his own hair he needed something to take his mind off his used to be friend......
L finally made it into his little house, and thought of nothing but to hop into bed and lock his eyes. Wrangling off all his clothes, he dropped them on the bottom side of his bed and got under the sheets. He closed his eyes, and not too long after drifted to sleep. He had a rather strange dream. He was facing his laptop, sitting in his old computer chair while nibbling on his thumb as usual. In the background, he could hear the panicked voices of about 4 men, and as he watched the screen of his laptop, he could see why. It was a news report on... Kira. The criminal he had been so desperately trying to find. He got closer to the screen, listening intently as the reporter gave the details with a shrill voice. "Police officers have found the dead body of Naomi..." The reporter trailed off as she held her Bluetooth closer to her ear to get the name. Before L could hear it, someone beside him yanked his shoulder, turning him to face their direction. "Ryuzaki!" The person hollered. At first, since it was so sudden, L couldn't make out their face. But as his mind became less distraught, he had the person formulated in his mind. "L-Light... Yagami?" L asked with slight doubt in his tone.
"Yes! Finally you said something! I thought you were gone for a second!" Light said with concern. "W-What?" L was confused. Why was he here? Why was Light addressing his presence like this? He was... gone?? "Light? Where is this?" L asked. "What? Have you really forgotten where we are? Maybe you really were gone... Well, this is the Headquarters. You know, the one you and Watari built for the us?" At the moment L heard his name, he shook. "Watari! Where's Watari?!" L frantically gripped Light's shoulders, begging for the answer. "Woah Woah Woah calm down Ryuzaki!" Light said, surprised. "Light! I need to see Watari! Right away! Please... Take me to him!" L was on the verge of tears, and by the look of Light's face, it had clearly gotten to him. "OK, look. I don't know what's going on with you, but if you need to see Watari that bad, he's on the 3rd floor."

"Thank you Light!" L praised Light, and quickly got up to begin his dash to the 3rd floor. As he entered the elevator, he fidgeted for the 3rd floor button. Finally, he pushed it, and the metallic doors came to a close. He was hyperventilating, not sure whether to be joyous or terrified. The elevator vigorously shook beneath L's feet, shifting him even more than his own body was.

Finally, the elevator froze, followed by the 'ping' that always came when an elevator had gotten to its destination. As soon as the doors opened, L sped out of the confined space and ran down the hall, opening every door, yelling "Watari!" into every room. He heard nothing but his own echo. He went down another hall, repeating the process once again. Once again, he got no response. He went down a third hall, calling, screaming,  wailing, wanting so bad to hear Watari's voice echo through the empty halls he seemed to be getting lost in. The fourth hall, no answer. The fifth hall, no answer. The sixth, no answer. L ran out of breath, so he stopped running. He shook the rest of the way, pausing in front of one last door. He could hear typing on the other side. He recomposed himself, and cracked open the door. "W-Watari?" L stuttered. It was a man with gray hair and a black trench coat. "WATARI!" L ran into the room and pounced on the man in the chair.  Or who he thought was a man. The figure went limp in his arms. "H-Huh?" L said with surprise. He turned the body around, and what he met was a dummy with a face painted on. "W-What?" Tears welled up in L's eyes. He looked up and saw that the computer was set to repeat a recording of typing, over and over again. L cried, and bowed his head. Suddenly, he heard footsteps stop behind him. L turned around, only to face Light Yagami. However, something wasn't right. Light had an evil grin, holding a little black book with a pen in his hands. "L-Light?" L asked. "No, L. I am GOD." Light stated. "What are yo-" L couldn't finish. He felt his heart stop and crumbled to the floor. He was speechless. All he could see was the ceiling. He was losing all his other senses. The last person he saw, or moreover the last thing he saw, was Light. And he was laughing. His eyes were glowing a devilish red. "Goodbye, L." Light closed in on L, and finally, he covered his eyes. L jumped up from his bed. He was panting, sweat trickling down his forehead.
Light woke up crying and screaming "I killed HIM i killed HIM MY ONLY FRIEND I KILLED HIM!" After this outburst Lights mum rushed into his room, "Light! Dear? Are you alright!?" She frantically questioned him the pale silver moonlight lit the room and she could see that he was crying and shaking. "Light... It was just a dream.... You didn't kill anyone" she said reaching out to touch his shoulder gently. "Don't touch me!" Light yelled startling his poor mother, his sister was at a sleepover and his father was at work so it was only them two in the house. "Light, dear, son.... please j-just calm down i-i want to help you but i cant with you acting like this...." she trailed off looking at her son he looked like a mess bags under his eyes and smaller if possible so she decided to leave him alone to his thoughts. . . And inner demons. Light took a few minutes to calm down. Recollecting his thoughts. "W-What was that?" Light asked himself. He rewatched his dream in his head. At first, he was facing a blank computer screen,  which suddenly began to play a news report on a sudden death in an area near by. He watched the reporter with extreme vigilance. The first name came out, "Naomi..." Immediately Light recognized it. Naomi... The name of the woman I made commit suicide. He thought. He put his hands on his head. Next thing he knew, L was next to him. He looked like he had seen a ghost. Light called out to him, but he didn't seem to hear. Light called to him again, but this time he only got closer to the screen in front of him. Light huffed. Mustering up enough strength, Light gripped L's shoulders and spun him around just enough for them to face each other. "L!" He hollered. L seemed very confused, as if he didn't know where they were. As if he didn't know who he was. "L-Light... Yagami?" L asked with doubt. "Yea?" Light answered.  Since it looked like L was lost, he informed him of where they were. "We're in Headquarters. You know, the one you and Watari built for the us?" Light tried to refresh L's memories. At the sound of "Watari", L jumped up from his seat, pleading to be told where Watari might be. Light had no idea why L was acting like this, nor did he know where Watari was. However, before he could say what he had thought, he just began to speak. He told L that Watari was on the 3rd floor, although he knew he couldn't confirm that fact. L dashed out of the room, zipping for the elevator. Light heard the 'ping' of the elevator reaching their current floor and in minutes the sound repeated, signaling that L was heading with determination for the 3rd floor. One moment, Light is quietly sitting in his computer chair. The next, he's walking down a hall, hold the Death Note and a pen. The book was already opened. And it seemed a name was already there. Light read it aloud while his body walked on its own. "L L-Lawliet..." Light's body trembled as he could hear repeated typing in a room farther down. He got closer to the room, shaking more with each step. Finally, when he got to the door, his nervousness was gone. His look of terror had drastically changed to a smug look of evil. He saw L in front of him, bowing his head. L seemed startled to hear footsteps suddenly stop behind him, because he turned around immediately after Light had gotten to the door. "L-Light?" L asked.
Light didn't even have the choice to answer on his own. "No, L. I am GOD." Light stated. In the darkness of his mind, Light could couldn't believe what he heard came out of his mouth. He was screaming inside, ripping his hair out in frustration. Before he knew it, L had fallen to the floor, eyes wide open, and body motionless. Light didn't hesitate to walk over and cover L's eyes. Nor did he hesitate to break into a fit of maniacal laughter. The Light inside was broken. He had fallen with L, on his knees, covering his eyes to hide the tears that were streaming down his face. "No." Light said quietly. "NO!" He said louder. "NOOOOOOOOOO!" His screech echoed through the darkness surrounding him, and with that, he woke up, crying and shaking.
