Chapter 9
Jerry's point of view:
Those twins were something else. Never said a word. Gave me the heebie jeebies. It was those eyes of theirs. That bright glowing purple looked like they glowed in the dark.
I grew to love Lilleth like a daughter. I didn't mind leaving Dandan with her, so long as it kept that Damien dude away from her. I didn't like the way he looked at her, like an animal ready to pounce.....
I never knew that Lilleth lived in such poor conditions. The whole ground below was just a land-filled wasteland; but when those twins took me underground, I was horrified with what I saw: malnourished, emaciated, hollowed eyes like they lost their innocence long ago. I noted they were all clean, even as I saw their clothes were all raged and worn. These were the children of the underground.
Blake showed me the nifty little laser trinket they had to clean themselves and other things with. It worked a lot like the ones I had back home, though theirs was more crudely put together. They took the place of running water showers at the turn of the last century. Eventually, they replaced washers and dryers, dishwashers, common household cleaners, tooth brushes, and even the ancient toilet got a makeover because of these gadgets. it cut down the human consumption of water more than two thirds.
Lyla showed me the sleeping area. All it was, was a giant, underground room, with hundreds of thick blankets lining the ground in little neat rows. It didn't seem fair to them, these kids. Being orphans. And for what? Being born a duplicate? It's been over a hundred years that a woman has had more than one deliberate pregnancy; but every once in awhile, without the help of any outside influence, a multiple birth happens. It was usually a set of twins, but sometimes even more happened. I could see one group of up to six huddled together. The mother's have their orders to terminate all but one child in their pregnancy, but a lot of them don't have the heart to do it. So they run; but with that microchip implant that every registered citizen has, it's only a matter of time that they are found and executed. I look around me at all the little lost souls, and I ask myself, "What have we done? How did we let it get this far?"
I see Damien looking at me with those coal black eyes of his. I swear, they had this glowing, redness to them, that made him look like he came straight from the depths of hell.
"Welcome to your new home," he says.
I look around. I always loved being a father, but how is it even possible to fill the needs of so many? I don't know, but I know I have to try.
"It needs a lot of work," I say. "It's very depressing around here. These kids need to be out in the sunshine."
"That would attract unwanted attention and draw in invaders. Children are not the only ones evading detection. Thieves, murderers, all the scum of society were put to ground when the tax payers stopped paying for the floating prisons."
"Shit!" I look at these kids, taking it all in. "There has to be something better than this."
"There will be. Your knowledge of security will see to that. Dandan will make her contributions as well.
"I can't really say that I'm surprised. Dandan always did have herself a creative streak. I always thought she had more to offer than just sit behind a secretaries desk."
"She has more of herself than she knows, as do you."
"There you go with all that witchy talk again," I say. "All you people and your glowing eyes, all you do and say, it gives me the willies."
"You have more in common with us than you are aware of."
"I'll take that as a compliment, I guess."
A little brown baby shyly comes up to me: brown skin and eyes, curly kinky brown hair. Raised up those little arms for a hug. I scooped that child up in my arms. Felt like a light bag of bones.
"These children have no choice but to feed off the left-overs that the dominant society throws away," says Damien.
"Well, we're going to have to change that."
"We do, and we will; but for now, we have a predator to catch."
"You just had to remind me of that, didn't you?"
