Chapter 10

Damien's point of view:

I wake up from a dream with much more ease this time.  The longing is still there.  It is inevitable.  All the more constant now, especially knowing she really exists in this world.

I peer around me.  The children are sleeping.  Jerry is curled up with several children around him, sleeping just as soundly.  The twins meanwhile, are at opposite ends of the large room, keeping vigil.  The moment they sense my presence, they turn as one.  I have the impression from the both of them that they never sleep.  No matter.  They will not interfere with what I am about to do.  I close my eyes, straighten my spine, and allow myself to go inward, somewhere between time and space.

I see the children dying in vast amounts.  It's not the predator we are after.  It's not even the band of raiders that were just above our very sleeping chamber.  It was our drinking water.  Poisoned from centuries of waste, it was the final straw in humanity.  The people above had their methods to clean.  Typically from osmosis.  The people below were condemned to die.  The people above spent so much time keeping them out, they neglected the upkeep of their own floating castles.  They took for granted that their bots would have the resources to continuously fix things.  In so doing, they signed their own death sentence.  The people below will be all that remain.

But what have we done?  We have turned our world into a wasteland.  When this event comes, that final act that destroys our drinking water, all but 10% of humanity will remain, and those that do not perish immediately, will die slowly and become sterile, thus ending the last of all of humanity.

I see hope.  There is a dragon among us:  the water dragon.  When this dragon appears, the love of a pure heart will purify all that is.

I see another part of our future.  The predator of fire is an unstoppable force; but just as we are about to lose hope, the warrior appears.  I see Lilleth getting hurt in the process.  There is nothing I can do.  If I interfere, we all die.  I can only hope that she will forgive me, or that I will be able to forgive myself...

I see another future, the very dream that has been with me since the day I was born.  Lilleth...  Her image is so clear now, more so than ever.  I see our unborn children.  I want this...  There are no guarantees in the future.  Only possibilities.

I feel a presence in my mind, both two and one.  I open my eyes to find the twins sitting next to me.   I say nothing.  I understand.  I offer the both of them my hands.  We all three close our eyes.  We see all.

All that is present.  All that is.  We sense every heartbeat in the room, every breath.  We sense the band of raiders up above us.  We even sense the wretched presence of rats and many cockroaches.  The  endless chirping of strategically placed gadgets of various builds are doing their job well, keeping them away from the living.  The pests are far away from us, currently feasting on the fallen bodies of the floating city nearby.

Our sight expands.  It takes us to a faraway place.  Jade..... It is already too late for her.  The predator is not in complete beast form yet, but he has more than doubled in size.  He will only continue to grow as he feasts on the dead.  Should he find any of us, the living will make him even more powerful.

There is a disturbance above.  The raiders have found an entrance to our hiding place.  The twins let their power come forth.  A blast of hot air explodes from the sewer pothole.  It detains them for a moment.  I see a change in their course.  It leads them on to finding Lilleth's dwelling.  I can NOT allow this to happen!  The twins feel the intensity of my resolve.  They continue the blast up above.  A whirlwind appears from the hole, rapidly growing, and moving a safe distance from us.  Eventually stands a full fledged tornado.  The people flee, straight in the direction of the monster that is waiting to devour them. This will make him turn even faster. As the last of them leaves this place, the tornado dissipates.

He will turn into beast mode all too soon.  I care not.  Lilleth is safe.
