Cabin

Vivian looked around, the ones who built this place did an incredible job, it was two stories tall, the first level containing the kitchen, the living room, a bathroom, and large bedroom, which had the basics, a bed, blankets and pillows, a closet, dresser, shelves, and a nightstand. Upstairs was just a giant space for her to do whatever she wanted, on the very back wall there was a huge circular window with a ledge along the bottom half that came out a little over a foot. She knew why that was there, she used to sit by the window in her old house to read short novels her mom got her, they put it in there so she could sit directly against it, using natural light to read. She liked the placement, the window gazed farther into the forest, allowing her to observe any wildlife that may come by.

Most of the crates were books, she unpacked those first, placing them on the shelves built for her, her favorites went to her room, including the old witchy books her mom had that she never read. After unloading all the books she was exhausted and the moon was shining through her special window. She crawled into bed and fell asleep.

The next morning she decided to unpack clothes first, but she also noticed that she felt hungry so she wandered into the kitchen, she noticed that she was left with plenty of snacks and food to last for a little while, she smiled, then frowned. She missed her mother. She put all her clothes into her closet and dresser, and her mothers too, one day, she'd grow into them. She spent the entire day sorting things and putting them all away, then went to bed once again.

Over time she realized that staying in bed was so much easier than trying to exist in this world that shunned her, but deep down she knew she had to stay strong, to accomplish her goals and remove the Witch Hunters from this world, no matter the agony it brought upon her muscles, she forced herself out of bed, then collapsed. Her arms and legs were burning but she forced herself out of her room, and went for a walk outside. When the end of the day come so was grateful she went out, the sun felt amazing on her skin, and the oxygen cleansed stagnant air from her being. Some days she just stayed in bed but she was sure not to let it take over her life. She occasionally went to town to stock up on resources and food, the townsfolk always looked sad when their eyes met hers, but they were more than happy to help.

Over the span of a year she learned all that she could from her books, her cabin was no longer as bland as it once was, decorated with twigs, shells, and many stones, which were the Bones of the Earth Angela had mentioned, she learned about what they could do in the books she read. She read about how these creatures came into being and that the beasts that belonged to the guardians were wendigos, well not quite.

They were once human turned cannibal and made into something else, something ethereal, supernatural, and possibly wicked- in the best way possible. While they shared the appearance and certain behaviors of a wendigo they were different, they didn't crave human flesh; they could consume it but they did not desire it. As Vivian read more into her books she learned the name of these protectors. The first, Elhaz, was the largest of them all, his skin was as dark and brown as the soil of the Earth, Second was Cynefin.

Cynefin was very battle-worn in his image, a long thick scar ran across his left side leading from his rib cage down to his hip. Another decorated his right hind leg, and more scars were placed throughout his front half, spreading across his shoulders down his chest. There were even small cracks portrayed on his skull-mask, with one of his antlers broken toward the end.

She looked back to Elhaz and examined the little scribbles of words next to him, in a language she couldn't understand, but there was a number, forty-six.

Forty-six what? She thought to herself.

The book she held only gave snippets of these beasts but she was sure there was more information stashed somewhere. She gathered the books she hasn't read yet and looked at their titles, one stood out, Na Talmhainn, Of The Earth. She flipped through the pages scanning for anything eye-catching then she saw a drawing of Elhaz, multiple sketches across two pages. The second page showed an image of him standing on his hind legs walking like a human, the number forty-six was written by his hooves.

Height, She thought.

That's how tall he was, forty-six feet. She realized.

She gazed back to the original sketches she was admiring and looked at Cynefin. Forty.

There was one more left, the third Guardian. She flipped through her newly found book past Elhaz and past Cynefin, and there he was, Solitz. King of Beltane.
