Chapter 17: Head Over Heels
"Thanks, guys! Cya next week!" Luz waved as Willow's dad left and she entered The Owl House.
King gasped, hopping up from Eda's lap. "You're back!"
He then ran over, climbed up her shoulder and then onto her head. "I didn't miss you at all."
Eda rolled her eyes before standing up. "So, how'd it go?"
"It went great!" Luz smiled.
"Wait, really? You actually had fun?" Eda asked. "I was thinking SOMEONE was gonna do something to make it go wrong."
"Nah, even when Grom attacked, it didn't change much." Luz then blushed a little. "I even got a dance."
"Okay, Grom better be dead this time." Eda said before smirking. "Who's the lucky person?"
"Amity Blight." Luz said, thinking back to the moment they shared at prom before Grom attacked.
"Blight?" Eda asked, scratching her chin. "Blight...Blight...where have I heard that name before?" She then grabbed her phone and started scrolling through things. "Oh! Right! Blight! The rich family. She wasn't a jerk to ya, was she?"
"No?" Luz asked.
"Okay good. Looks like the genes didn't pass on." Eda said, putting away her phone. "I knew her mom."
"You did?! When!?" Luz said, picking up King and carrying him as she walked over.
"Back at school. Biggest regret of anyone's life is meeting her, lemme tell ya." Eda sighed. "She was and still is greedy, manipulative, lying, and no good. I may be considered all of those things, but at least I care for people! She didn't even treat her own boyfriend like a person, and more like a toy she gave nicknames too."
"That actually explains a lot..." Luz thought.
"Anyway, enough about that shady woman, I'm glad you had fun." Eda said, ruffling Luz's hair. "Not to mention, you're getting stronger."
Luz smiled even more and set King down gently and hugged her. "And I know I've said this a lot...but thank you."
Eda smiled, patting her back. "You're welcome, Luz."
"I love you, Eda." Luz said, like a small child would say to their loving parent just out of pure cuteness."
Eda's eyes widened before she smiled and hugged Luz just a tad tighter. "Love you too."
"Does this mean Eda's my grandma now?" King asked, confused. "Cause I'm fine with that!"
"Oh, yeah! What were you two doing while I was gone?" Luz asked, letting go and then taking off the jacket to her suit.
"Oh, me and the little guy were bonding. He started missing you, so I showed him some things I used to watch when I was your age." Eda said simply.
King laughed. "The 'cartoons' were strangely horrifying and amazing at the same time."
Luz laughed before she yawned, stretching her arms. "Well, I'm gonna hit the hay."
"Ummm, Mom?" King asked.
"Hmmm?"
"Can I stay with Eda tonight? She's been really nice lately." King said.
Luz smiled and nodded. "You don't even need to ask, sweetie. Mwah!" She said, kissing him goodnight before leaving to sleep.
The next few days were...well. Great. A monster wasn't attacking, and Amity was officially apart of Luz's group of friends.
It felt...nice. Seeing Amity smile in a way she hadn't seen before Prom Night.
When she laughed, it was genuine. She was having fun. Whenever someone would tell a joke and she laughed, it screamed pure joy. Like she was having a good time.
Whenever she said 'I'll see you later', she actually meant it. It wasn't a cheap way to just be left alone or leave, it was her leaving and then wanting to come back.
Perhaps Luz was thinking too far into it, but even if she was, she could at least tell Amity was being more...herself.
"And then remember when the seagulls came crashing down, pretty much wrecking our fort?" Willow laughed.
Amity laughed with her. "Oh, I can't forget. But now? Add a giant gooey monster to that."
"I'm surprised I wasn't traumatized." Luz laughed. "Considering I was dragged across the air and then nearly eaten."
"Oh, please, you're not getting eaten on my watch." Amity smirked.
"Awww! Didn't know you cared!" Luz laughed.
Gus and Willow just looked at each other and smirked. They knew exactly what was going on...but to be fair, a lot of people could see it.
Then? The bell rang, disrupting everyone from their thoughts.
"Looks like that's our cue." Amity said, standing up. "I'll cya later guys."
Luz smiled and waved. "Cya soon, Blight."
"Cya, Ami!" Willow added before all of them walked off to their separate classes.
Luz kept smiling through nearly the whole day, and even as she was picked up.
Eda immediately caught on. "What's got you so happy?"
"Huh? Oh! Just had a good day is all." Luz replied.
"Really? You seem to be thinking about something...or someone?" Eda asked as she parked in her driveway and then got out of the car.
Luz's cheeks turned red as she got out of the car, grabbing her backpack. "Nah, don't be silly, Eda!"
"Riiiiight." Eda said with a nod before walking inside the house. "Your blushing says otherwise. Who's the lucky person?"
Luz laughed. "I can assure you, Eda, it's not-"
"Is it the Blight girl?"
"NO.WHYWOULDYOUTHINKTHAT-"
"It's the Blight girl." Eda smirked. "You have a crush on her, don't you?"
Luz's entire face turned to the color of a tomato. "N-No! No! I...I don't...think I do..."
"Luz. Take it from a gal who's had multiple of these things. You'll try to deny it at first before your feelings become so obvious, you're screaming them." Eda smiled. "And considering how you've been staying here for so long and don't plan on leaving? Then I'd say it's about time you got a crush."
Luz then began to think, and her thoughts eventually lead all the way back to miss Amity Blight.
Her face turned even redder somehow. She had fallen in love with her.
Meanwhile...
Amity popped out her earbuds and then sat down at her desk, opening up a textbook and then grabbing a pen and scribbling things down.
But as her mind came up with equation after equation, they drifted off to something...someone.
She thought of a week ago, Prom Night, where Luz asked her to dance, beginning what had so far been the most eventful party she had gone too.
She thought of seeing Luz being completely okay after Grom was killed, and how much relief she had felt.
She remembered Luz's jokes and the smile that seemed contagious. She made her smile.
Amity felt her own smile creep its way over her lips until she realized she had just been scribbling a random blotch in her notebook.
"Okay...that's...not what I was trying to do." Amity said before shaking her head. "Focus."
She then started making the equations in her head again, writing things down on a blank sheet of paper...before once again, her mind drifted off to something else.
The many times they had met over the coming months. How nothing but good luck seemed to come after Luz moved to their school.
And then, she remembered at the dance...Luz's smile when she offered to be her friend. For that small moment, Amity had a true friend again.
Friend...that didn't seem to be the reason why she kept thinking about her.
Another smile crept onto her lips, but it was much larger. Amity looked down at her paper again, but saw that she didn't scribble in a blotch of ink.
She scribbled in a name, all of them capital letters.
LUZ
Amity's eyes widened and her face turned tomato red. "I'm in love with Luz...!"
She then dropped her pen and rested her hands on the sides of her head. "I-I'm in love with that weird...amazing...sweet...funny...kind...girl..."
Amity was smiling again, but shook out of her trance, once again a blushing mess.
