Chapter 10: Secrets Slither

It had officially been weeks since Luz first went to school. She was the best of friends with Willow and Gus, and slight acquaintances with Amity.

Luz had been inside the human world for two months. And one day she was particularly looking forward too was coming up. One she was super excited to celebrate in the human realm.

King's Adoption Anniversary.

Luz and Eda went inside The Owl House, where King was watching TV with a cupcake in his hand.

"Hey! Where did you get that?" Eda asked.

"I found it in the Chamber of Ice!" King said cheerfully as licked up the pink frosting and ate away at the chocolatey substance.

"You mean the fridge?" Eda asked.

"Yeah! That!" King smiled. "This is really good! Truly worthy of keeping my hunger satiated!"

Luz smiled and then kissed King's forehead. "So, what did you do?"

"Watched the screen of magic- I mean TV." King said, his tail wagging, once again loving the affection.

Luz smiled before setting her backpack down and then sat down, putting King in her lap.

"Awww, you look so motherly." Eda laughed as she went to feed Hooty and Owlbert.

Luz smiled before seeing King cuddle up with her. She smiled before looking at him. "Guess what day is coming up, cutie pie?"

"My...birthday?"

"Nope!"

"Your birthday?"

"Nope!"

"Eda's birthday?"

"Nope!"

"Someone's birthday?"

"It's not a birthday." Luz laughed. "It's kinda like one though! It's your favorite day!"

King gasped. "THE COMEDY HOUR!?"

"Okay, second favorite day."

King gasped again. "Adoption Anniversary?!"

Luz smiled before nuzzling him. "Bingo!"

King smiled wide and hugged his owner tightly. "That's in a week!"

"Yes, it is!" Luz smiled, kissing his nose. "And it will be a Luz and King day!"

King's eyes went starry and he began to speak. "Thanks, Mo-"

Then? The TV once again showed bright red letters and cut to the news.

"It seems once again the mystical monsters of fiction are returning. Everyone please evacuate until the military or possibly our city's mysterious protector appears and defeats the creature." The reporter said, showing a quick footage of the monster.

Luz sighed. "I can't catch a break. There's like a monster every week!"

King pouted before seeing what the monster was. "A Slitherbeast?"

"Wha?" Luz asked as she looked at the TV. "Those things are usually peaceful! I mean, unless you bother it." She then gently set King down and once again got into her witch attire. "Let's get to the bottom of this."

Then, in a moment of heroism, she flew out the door and towards the city.

Meanwhile, the Slitherbeast roared and roared, trapping any citizens that didn't make it to the evacuation in time in mysterious purple goo.

The Slitherbeast was covered in head to toe with snowy white fur, and had horrifying yellow claws. Finally, the creature didn't seem to have any eyes. Or perhaps it did and it was just under all the fur.

Then, Luz showed up,  landing in front of the creature. Back home, the Slitherbeast was sort of like bees or a bear. If you don't provoke it, it wouldn't bother you.

The Witch then freed all the citizens she saw trapped in purple goo, and they all ran to hide, some of them calling out to Luz, thanking her.

Luz looked around the beast's body, trying to find anything that might've put it into such a rage filled state.

But that's when the Slitherbeast noticed her and roared, charging at Luz.

Luz gasped and quickly flew out of the way, spinning around her finger and summoning a small army of Abominations.

The Abominations let out groans and whines as they tackled the creature, but the Slitherbeast just slashed at the clay like monsters with its powerful claws, destroying them.

Luz then once again spun around her finger, and then vines shot out from the ground, tying and pinning the creature down. The Witch then floated down and kept looking. Perhaps it was a spell that provoked it?

Then? She heard a camera flash. Luz snapped her head around and her eyes widened.

Gus was there, eyes wide with amazement and shock as he had his phone held out. Willow was trying to pull him away before she too saw The Witch and froze up.

"She's...whoa." Gus whispered.

Luz then quickly disguised her voice, making it deeper. "You two! Leave with the other citizens! It is not safe!"

Then, The Slitherbeast roared as it finally broke out of the vines and then smacked Luz to a building.

Luz cried out in pain, but quickly got back up and summoned her staff, spinning it around and remembering her training she had done a month ago. She then drew a spell circle with her staff and shot out a beam of ice.

The Slitherbeast roared as its body slowly began to freeze.

"YOU TWO! HIDE!!!" Luz exclaimed in her deep voice.

Willow and Gus didn't hesitate to obey and ran into an alley.

"HOLY CRAP, WILLOW!!! DID YOU SEE THAT!?!?"

"I SAW IT!!! AND I DON'T WANNA DIE!!!" Willow screamed to her friend.

Luz eventually froze the creature and she tried to use some kind of psychic spell to try and look into the creature's head, to see if it was magic provoking it.

Problem was...she wasn't very good at psychic magic, so she could be wrong.

"Nothing." Luz said before once again looking on the outside of the frozen beast. "I can't kill this thing...it was always innocent back home."

Then? Luz saw something small and golden near the Slitherbeast's neck. Luz gasped. It was some kind of shock collar.

And then? The Slitherbeast once again broke out and roared, spitting out a ball of purple goo at Luz.

Luz dodged it and then hopped onto the creature's back. She then summoned a sword and quickly cut the shock collar, watching it fall to the ground.

The Slitherbeast roared one more time before it sat, now much calmer.

Luz then hopped down and stomped the collar. "There? See? You're ok." She then raised a hand towards the monster, a little worried it would might bite her hand off.

The Slitherbeast hummed before licking her hand like a giant puppy, and then running off, away from the city.

Luz sighed in relief before she wiped off the goo from her hand and went into an alley, just to rest. She had been getting so tired from all the monsters Belos and Golden Guard had been sending at her.

She looked around for any 'cameras' before lowering her mask so she could breathe easier. "I should probably be celebrating..."

"LUZ!?!?!?" A voice shrieked.

Luz's eyes widened and she quickly stood and then turned around to see Willow. "W-WILLOW! I-IT'S NOT WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE!"

"YOU'RE A SUPERHERO!?!? AND YOUR EARS..." Willow then slowly walked over, jaw still dropped as she touched Luz's pointy ears. "SO...POINTY..."

Luz blinked. "Okay...so maybe it's exactly what it looks like."

"I...I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS." Willow exclaimed, just generally shocked.

Luz then saw people coming out from their hiding spots. She gasped, and then dragged Willow deeper into the alley. "Look! People can't know who I am!"

Willow nodded slowly, but she was still trying to process everything. "That's why everything seems so new to you! You're not even from this...existence!"

Luz sighed. "No, I'm not. I'm not from out of town." She then made sure no one was listening. "I'm from The Boiling Isles, a realm of magic and adventure...and danger. I was sent here by Emperor Belos in an attempt to kill me. But that failed, so now he and his second in command, Golden Guard are sending these monsters after me."

"Then why do they attack the city?!" Willow cried. "I mean, no offense! I would risk my life if it meant you were ok, but why attack others if they're only after you?"

"Either to lure me out or because they're untamed and wild." Luz said before continuing. "My step mom? She's not even related to me or knew me up until a month ago. She's my guardian and offered to help me."

Willow gasped. "That's why you wear that hat too!" She then looked at Luz. "And that's why you seemed nervous when Gus said people from all over the world were talking about your fight with that snake! And that's why you didn't know what a superhero was! Or wars!"

Luz nodded. "Heh, yup. And now we're here. I keep my identity a secret to not only protect people, but-"

"So bad people don't try to cut out your brain." Willow finished. "That...makes sense....you aren't gonna erase my mind, are you?"

Luz sighed. "I wish I could do that...but even if I could, I...I trust you. Promise me you won't tell ANYONE. Okay?"

Willow was silent, once again trying to process. But then, she nodded and shook Luz's hand. "Okay. I promise. Your secret is safe with me."

Then, there was another camera flash. And once again, it was Gus.

"Oh! Hi, Luz!"

"GUS, GIVE ME THAT-"
