Chapter 5: Side Job
Reaching the hot new dance club for the magically inclined Park referred to, was quite easy. It required only a five-minute drive, down a few side streets to reach the designated area, but like most city hot spots, parking was a pain. Why did everyone need to own a car when a quick walk got you there just as fast! I mean come on, why allow more cars than parking spaces in the city; the concept was a raging monster in disguise. My conclusion: city architects just wanted to make that one late person to work even more ticked.
After thirty minutes of scouring the streets near the club, we finally got a space for Trevor's sleek black two door. My gaze swept over the wild beauty Trevor earned with an appraising eye. All that horsepower packed into a well-crafted body design, made me purr alongside it.
I ran a hand over the polished, cool surface; not a single blemish or mark slandered it.
"Let's go," Trevor said from the sidewalk two paces ahead of me.
"My, my Trevor, I still can't believe you got such a baby with your measly police allowance. Do you have a side job?" I asked while walking towards him.
He glanced at me, a scowl spoiling his face. "All you need to know is the specifics of the current case, Lanna."
"Oh, come on, Trevor. You can't blame a girl for being a little curious," I taunted, possibly adding irritation from his lack of response to my appearance. "I wonder," I continued, tapping my chin, "could you be taking bribes? What a naughty boy."
Trevor sighed and avoided my statement.
"No? Maybe August knows then..."
"Shouldn't you have better things to think about?" he chastised me like a school kid.
"Hm, no why would I, when my target is right before me. I already know what makes you tick-tock, now I just need to learn the timing."
He rolled his eyes at my plan, causing a miniscule bubble of sadness to burst inside me. I'll never crack his shell. "Fine, let's change topics, because Special Investigator Trevor Skilts can't face a woman's aggressive nature head on. How does-"
"Maybe if you dropped the sarcasm every once in awhile, a civil conversation could be made," Trevor interjected, his tone harsh.
A giggle fled my mouth. "Oh, my. Trevor, you make this so much fun! I've never had a chase be so interesting before, you might even succeed in making me succumb to your irresistible charms."
"Enough," he growled.
"Very well. Anyways like I was trying to ask before you so rudely interrupted me, how do you plan to get inside? Masquerade as the boyfriend? Or better yet—boy toy?"
He sent a chilling glare my way, cold enough to freeze my toes right off of me. Still, he turned away, avoiding my question, yet again. What a terrible conversationalist! It seems only the wicked have a good taste in humor, a pity.
"Fine... acquaintance, does that suit your refined tastes? Or would you prefer stranger danger?" I slapped a hand to my mouth, but it failed to conceal the joke.
"Acquaintance."
"Boring," I muttered, blowing out my irritation as a thin stream of air. Maybe I'm being too grumpy, ruining the mood—whatever!
With my inability to decipher my mood swings, we reached club Mythic. The name alone spiked fancy cocktails, unicorn hallucinations and the appearance of a mime. Not really sure how the last one fit in there, but it did.
The stone exterior jutted out onto the sidewalk, and the building rose to match the tall skyscrapers beside it. With a simple but refined black, swirly sign lettering, the club passed my grade scale of places to visit. Well, that was the outside who knows what horrors dwelled inside. Since Park was the referral, I still felt like a mosquito colony was eating my insides. Yeah, not a pretty feeling.
The outside had no windows and the black, metal door did little for the mood. Still, a line of potential club goers lined the wall, gossiping with hooded eyes and shrieks of ecstasy. Their short, skimpy dresses and three inch heels put my revealing outfit to shame. I sighed, what is this the new hotspot for underage college freshmen?
Trevor came to a halt, surveying the queue. "What's wrong handsome, can't compete?"
He brushed off my compliment and snarky response. "How long will this take?"
"Oh, no worries," I said, pointing a finger at the giddy bunch. "Their Normals like you, no magic involved, zilch—mi amigo."
He frowned at my explanation. "What? It means, we cut in line. Never broke the rules before?"
"We wait properly, Lanna."
"Then you can wait here, with the young girls and boys, while I go inside. Maybe you could round up some extra cash by telling them your job description." I strutted on ahead, leaving Trevor in my dust.
"Lanna!" he growled from behind, not understanding the 'do not disturb' pose I added to my walk
Next to the entrance, stood two tall and muscular brutes. "Hello, gentlemen," I purred, tilting my head and fluttering my eyelashes at them. "Can I go in?"
The dark-skinned one stepped towards me, his towering frame hovered over me. "Magic user?"
"Of course, why else would I come here," I replied with a lopsided grin.
He arched both eyebrows at my response.
"Now, now, it's only because this is my first time." I laughed, smacking his arm playfully. "No need to take my words so seriously. You see, I was referred by... a friend of mine. He said the club just recently opened, but only for the worthy."
I nearly choked on my words. Friend. Park was the farthest thing from a friend. I wouldn't even label him as an acquaintance. He was the kind of person you ignore on the streets when they look your way and shout your name.
He nodded his head, pulling a blue, jagged, crystal out of his pocket. The center glowed a faint white, the rest translucent. "Hold this."
Grabbing the crystal, I held it in my palm, letting it attach to my life energy like a parasite. Instantly, the pale light burst to life, a sign my magical influence was very real. The man grinned, showing a pair of sharp fangs. It was no wonder the two bouncers couldn't sense Human magic, Vampires had a frail constitution for what they considered inferior forms. "Happy?"
He motioned for me to give it back, and his partner opened the door. "Enjoy."
"Oh, wait." I put my finger up, stopping him from pushing me aside. "See him? Can he come with me?" I directed my gaze to Trevor who stood several feet behind.
"Normal?"
I sighed, watching how the lethal glint in his eyes transformed his face into a freak show. "Yeah, can you do me the favor?"
He lowered his head to my ear. "Slave?"
I bite back a retort, totally unlike me. Trevor a slave? Please, maybe a slave to my charms, but not magically induced like the guy implied. Even I'm not that stupid to openly parade around an influenced pet of my own race.
"More like a bodyguard my Daddy hired to make sure I don't step out of line," I said, winking at him.
He pulled back. "A Normal as a bodyguard?"
"It looks good to the public. You know those fanatics."
"Fine, but you're responsible for him."
I brushed a stray lock of hair away from my face, staring with half closed eyelids. "Of course."
A/N: Another chapter, moving right along! Let me know what you think, I'd love to hear it. Enjoy!
