Wishing Star

Anna couldn't sleep.  She lay in her bed for hours and hours. As much as she tried to suppress it,  her work kept creeping into her mind. Her head was spinning in circles, trying to find a way out. She stared out her window, basking in the moon's beams. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw a streak of brilliant light. A shooting star.  Enchanted by the sight, she made a wish before it plummeted back into darkness.

It was just a simple wish. It meant nothing. At least, that's what she thought.

Anna stared emptily at her computer screen. She could not bear to read over and summarize another interview. She glanced at the clock, realizing it had only been ten seconds since she had last checked the time. She clenched her fists. It was almost five o'clock. Almost there. Five more minutes, then I'm free.  She continued to stare at her screen, knowing that her boss might burst in at any moment and scream at her for looking away from her screen for a split second. She felt warm suddenly. She looked up to see a bright light in the sky rapidly approaching. The light began to unfold its rays, enveloping her in warmth and blinding luminosity. Anna's mind melted away into subconsciousness.

Anna felt pain stabbing her brain. She wanted to scream, but she could make no sound. She opened her eyes to a blurry, translucent light in a sterile room.  Her body was in so much agony that she could not move. The door opened, and a large creature scurried into the room.  He went about the room, fixing things. As her eyes focused, she could see that it was brown with eight red legs, wearing a white lab coat. Suddenly, something popped up on the side of her vision.

Species: Megatiyur

Planet: Pluto

Size: 4'9''

Weapons: none

More

More? Immediately, more information popped up, then flickered out.

"No complications. The new brain is working perfectly."

Anna glanced around the room, wondering who had spoken. Her eyes settled on the creature realizing it was radioing someone.

"Excellent! Then give her a few more sleep drops. We want a full recovery?" A scratchy voice croaked from the receiver.

"Yes sir." He approached me with a blue bottle. Three drops wet my lips, and my eyes grew heavy again.

Anna woke to birds chirping. That's a first. She suddenly bolted upright. Work! She scrambled for her phone. 12:00?! She was about to jump out of bed and get dressed, when she noticed an email.

"Ten day vacation?! Well, now enjoy a permanent vacation. You're Fired!"

She stared in shock. Ten days? I've been gone ten days?  At that moment, a message came into her retinal view. Welcome, cyborg, to your new operating system! Cyborg?

Suddenly, Anna understood. Not who did this, or why, but at least she knew what happened. She was now something so much more than a human being. Anna was a cyborg.
