Chapter 27 - Meet the Ghost

Yunlan told him about Wei's mission to find Dixingian criminals, he told him that they had spent a lot of time together lately and that he wished Wei wouldn't have to see that bastard king ever again, only thinking about what he did to his Wei had his blood boil, thinking of Wei's scars made his heart scream in pain...

He was brought back to himself seeing the expression on the other man's eyes.

Yezun's face hardened, he didn't know anything about the scars, Wei never told him...

"Of course he didn't tell me," Yezun murmured, his voice full of pain.
"He probably got hurt because of me."

Yunlan didn't ask anything, he didn't need to, because Yezun started to explain.
"Twins are rare in our world, very rare, nobody expected me to be born. My mom wanted to protect me, I can only guess how much she must have begged father to keep me a secret.
I don't know how they managed to convince the midwife not to tell anyone, but my father wasn't just any man, he was the Envoy so she probably just obeyed his orders and kept quiet.
Nobody outside our family knew that there were two of us. It was a big risk, of course, but luckily we always looked so much the same that it wasn't too difficult and I could even go out sometimes, we simply needed to show ourselves only one at a time. We ate in turns, sometimes my mom would give us her food, nobody ever suspected anything. We were very close and we told each other everything. When we grew up, he insisted that he was the older brother so he would become the next envoy."

There was that sad smile on Yezun's face, it was so similar to Wei's that Yunlan's heart ached again. "Were you jealous?" he asked.

Yezun looked affronted. "Jealous? Of course not, he wanted me free from the king's cruelty, he always thought of my safety, he even insisted that I accepted one of the Envoy's devices. Every Envoy always had three, only Wei has two. Nobody knows though. When the king took them off my father's body, he ordered him to give them to his son... but Wei gave one to me, so that I'd be faster than anyone else and if needed I could always escape."

Yunlan listened intently, the pieces of the puzzle were fitting together now and he finally understood why Wei never rebelled, he wasn't alone after his parents died, he had a brother to protect.

Yezun looked lost in thought, and continued, "When he became the new Envoy, he sent me away. He said he would have to go out often and I couldn't stay at the palace anymore since I couldn't pretend to be him when he was away... but he never abandoned me, we managed to meet from time to time, secretely, and he would tell me things, I could see that he was worn out and really wanted to change things, but the king's power was too much. We could never overpower him alone, and getting people to rebel would result in their deaths, so we did what we could together, helping some people escape. Not enough though."

"Why are you here now? You came to spend some time with your brother?" Yunlan asked, wondering why he popped out of nowhere.

"I heard strange rumours concerning the Envoy, I couldn't believe that he betrayed the king and I admit I got worried. I know that he's smart, and strong, maybe I shouldn't worry but..."

He was interrupted when Yunlan yelled.
They had arrived near Sid and Yunlan saw Zhu Hong running, she was almost there, he yelled her name and ran in her direction, he didn't know why but he was worried, maybe because he was constantly in a state of anxiousness since Wei got hurt... protecting him... 'Focus, Yunlan,' he told himself, pushing back the image of a bleeding Shen Wei falling down, looking at him with a smile, because he had succeeded.

Yezun followed, after hearing those alarming rumours on the 'envoy's betrayal' he had feared for his brother's life; meeting Yunlan had calmed him a little, knowing that Wei was cared for had been reassuring in a way, but now that same panic forced its way into his heart again.

Zhu Hong turned hearing Zhao's voice calling her, and she saw him with 'Shen Wei'. Seeing them together eased her worries, she sighed and said, "You’re here, you’re alive!" before she could help herself.

They chilled instantly, knowing that she was referring to Wei and not Yezun.

"What happened?" Yunlan asked.

"I thought he was in danger but I'm glad to see that he’s ok," and she looked at Yezun with a smile, probably the first one she ever gave him, but it vanished when she heard him say, "No, I’m not Wei, you don't know me although we have met before when you found my note and I sent you here."

She gasped. "You're the Ghost?" and Yezun nodded.

Yunlan didn't know much about the Ghost, but it wasn't the moment to talk about that, he wanted to know why she had looked so relieved seeing them together.

Zhu Hong told them everything that had happened, and when she relayed Wei's message, it was a hard moment for Yunlan. His heart wanted to rejoice, but at the same time he felt, just like her, that it sounded too much like a goodbye.

He was extremely worried, he immediately called Wang telling her that they were coming in and he wanted everyone present, not just Da Qing and Lin Jin, but also Wang herself, including Old Li and Guo ChangCheng.

Since the woman who shot Wang Fang's husbands, but most importantly to Yunlan had shot Shen Wei, had been handed over to the homicide department, they had no major case to work on so some members of the team might be out.

Yunlan wanted to talk to all of them and ask their help.
If they knew what was best for them, they should all turn their backs on him and leave, because what he was about to ask was very much like interfering with the Internal Affairs of another Country, but Yunlan knew that they wouldn't do that.
He knew that if he asked them to help him they would follow him anywhere, to fight and die at his side, he just hoped it wouldn't come to that.
