Syd and I both lay on the bed as we stared at the ceiling and listened to a Yardbirds record. I turned over toward him. "I think it's time to get ready. If I don't move I'll fall back asleep."

He smiled and kissed me on the cheek. "You're already dressed. Give me a second and I'll be ready."

When he'd finished, he came out of his room and approached me. He gently grazed my lips with his and softly touched his forehead to mine. "Do you know how much I love you?" He questioned, sounding quite solemn.

"I have an idea," I answered, chuckling a bit.

He pulled away and looked me straight in the eyes. His dark eyes entranced me and pulled me in. I couldn't look away even if I tried. "I don't believe you do," he said in monotone.

"What's wrong, Syd? This isn't very... 'you' to do something like this. I know you love me and you know that I love you, too."

He gave a weak smile. "I just wanted you to know..."

I paused and pondered to myself. Then I finally gained enough courage to ask. "Is this about David?"

His eyes widened. "What? No! Of course not. I-"
"Syd..."

He rolled his eyes and smirked. "Okay, maybe it is. But it doesn't matter. I've got you. Just forget everything I've said in the past fifty seconds."

I let out a sigh of relief and grabbed his hand, lacing our fingers together. "Come on, let's go out, just you and me."

"At least until I have band practice."

"That's fine. Let's just stop wasting time!"

We exited the flat together and as we made our way down, we were greeted by a familiar face.

"Hey, Roger," Syd said as we made our way down the stairs.

"Oh, hey, Syd," Roger replied,"you're just the man I wanted to see."

Syd stopped and waited. "What's up?"

"I just wanted to tell you that I had a talk with a producer yesterday and they want to sign a record deal with us today. They want to meet around two. Is that all right?"

Syd glanced over at me and smirked. I slowly nodded and shooed him away. I knew he wanted this. Being a famous musician was his dream and I didn't want to hold him back.

Syd came over and kissed me goodbye. Roger waved as they both exited the building. I guessed I had some time to kill. I decided to go to the nearest outlet and buy some books or some new records.

---

I walked to the local record shop and immediately skipped over in excitement to the new arrivals section. I looked at records from The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Cream, and Jimi Hendrix.

I continued to look as I heard the bell above the door ring and footsteps coming toward me. Then someone whispered in my wear. "Hey, stranger."

I gasped at the sudden and unexpected greeting. I steadily turned and came face to face with a man all to familiar to me.

"Oh, hello there, David," I replied softly as I looked at the floor sheepishly.

"You enjoying your time browsing through some vinyls?"

"Oh, yes. I very much enjoy music."

"I do, too. Music is... My everything."

"It's not that important to me. But I still enjoy it."

"People usually don't understand me when I say that. Some say that music is just music. They're totally indifferent. I don't get how people couldn't think of music the way I do. But maybe that's just me."

"That's how I am about art."

"Really? You draw?"

"I paint and do watercolor mostly. Syd wants me to help design album covers for his band."

"Syd?"

"Oh, he's my boyfriend. He's in a band called Pink Floyd. I'm pretty sure you know him, actually."

"Syd Barrett? He's your boyfriend?"

He scoffed and I just started at him, exasperated at his condescending tone. Then he started to laugh.

"You're dating that druggie?" He asked through his laughter. "Hey, how much LSD does that kid take a day? How many times has he dropped acid?" He asked sarcastically.

I continued to stare as he guffawed at his own childish jokes which were obviously one-sided.

"Oh, come on," he gently punched my shoulder,"you know I'm just joking. I love Syd. I... I Really miss him..."

I saw the honesty in his eyes and heard the sincerity in his voice. He really did miss Syd. I started to wonder if anything happened between them that could have made them grow apart.

"Is something wrong?" I asked as the store grew silent.

He just shrugged and looked off in the distance. "I just... I want to make things right with him. But he refuses to talk to me. I'm sure he'd hate the idea of me talking to you, too. I should probably just go."

"No," I said a lot louder than expected. Then I quieted down,"I can talk to Syd for you and see if he'd want to meet up. I'm sure I could get him to go."

"Really? You'd do that for me?"

"Sure. Why not?"

He just smiled, which, I had to admit was quite charming and alluring. I just smiled back as I waved goodbye and left the store. Unfortunately David had distracted me from purchasing any records, but I was already almost back home and didn't want Syd to worry about me if he had been waiting for me to arrive.

I got back to my flat and stepped inside. Syd was there with Roger and they looked at me simultaneously.

"You buy any records?" Syd asked as he got up to come over to me and give me a hug.

"No... Didn't see anything I wanted," I answered.

"Really? You didn't want anything new?"

"I got a little distracted."

"What could you possibly have gotten distracted by?"

I stood there in silence, not knowing what to say. Then I finally blurted out,"I had a talk with David."

Syd gave me a funky look and then turned to Roger who promptly turned away, not wanting to take part in our discussion.

"Why were you talking to him?" Syd broke the silence.

"He was just there and he recognized me from earlier today. He told me he wanted to talk to you."

"Me? Of all the people... Good God, I've no idea why he'd want to talk to me. He despises me."

"He told me that you hated him. That's why he wanted to find out why by having a chat with you."

Syd let out an exasperated sigh. "Fine, I'll talk to him and see what's up. I'll call him right now."

While Syd went off to call David, I sat next to Roger. I wanted to know what was going on between them. "Hey, Roger," I started,"do you know what happened between Syd and David?"

He looked around the room as if he didn't want to be caught talking to me and then he answered,"well, I don't really know the full story. Nick knows more than I do. But I can't tell you what I know."

"Go ahead."

"Apparently David was dating Syd's little sister. They did some things.. You know. But David broke her heart. He was cheating on her."

"But what would that have to do with David being angry at Syd, like he said?"

"It may have been how Syd treated David even before that all happened." Roger leaned in closer,"I'm not sure if you noticed, but Syd is quite a jealous guy. He's always envied David and his looks, guitar skills, and his singing voice- his overall musical ability and his suave character. Everyone just loved David and that's why he wasn't very fond of him. At least that's my theory."

I sat back in my chair and just stared at Roger. I couldn't believe it. They were acting like girls. A friendship was ruined over this?

Syd came back out and announced that he was going to meet David for coffee tomorrow morning. "We're going to have a little talk. I honestly can't really remember the whole reason why I was so mad at him.. It'll be nice to story things out."

I smirked at him as I scooted back in my chair and got up to give him a reassuring hug. "It's going to be fine. Don't worry. It'll be nice for you to have an old friend back."

"I guess so. I just hope that- oh, never mind."

"You hope that what?"

"I just... I hope that he doesn't bring you into this. I'm pretty sure he's got an infatuation with you."

Roger immediately got up and left. Smart lad. He knew where this was going.

"Syd," I started,"please, just stop. How many times do I have to tell you? Stop worrying about that. Even if he did, I wouldn't fall for him. I love you."

He gave a weak smile. "That- that means a lot to me. I love you, too."

He kissed me on the lips as he gently wrapped his arms around me. "You're perfect," he whispered as he nuzzled his face into my neck.

I brought us over to the bed and ran my fingers through his straggly hair as we fell asleep in each other's embrace. I wanted him to sleep peacefully because I knew tomorrow morning would be stressful.

"One more thing," Syd said through a yawn,"he told me he wanted you to join us. I'm a bit worried, but you can tag along if you'd like."

"Sure, I'll come. But only to be with you and to help you out."

"Thanks. I don't think I could go there alone."

That was it. I don't think I could handle that. David would stop at nothing to be with me if he really wanted to. What had I gotten myself into?
