A Death A Funeral And A Whole Lotta Hydra
"....may he rest in peace." Steve finished his speech and walked over to where the coffin lay, he placed a hand on it's red, white, and blue covered surface. It was empty. They still hadn't found Bucky's body, they told him that they most likely wouldn't. A nice farmer or mountain climber would probably find it and bury it out of respect. Steve doubted that, the place where Bucky had been lost was all isolated mountains and snow. Not a person for miles around.
Steve wouldn't snap out of his little trance, fresh tears started streaming down his face. He tried drinking the problem away, hoping that alcohol could help like it did when his parents died but he was a new man now. Because of his formula that made him ten times faster, ten times stronger, it also made his liver ten times faster when it came to filtering out the toxic drinks that he ingested. So he couldn't get drunk unless he decided to drink an entire liquor store.
Peggy, Steve's love interest, stood and walked up to the coffin, "Steve," she whispered to him, "We have to sit down now."
He shook his head as to say no but when Peggy helped lead him down the steps, he followed slowly. She sat him down next to her on one of the church's pews. Bucky's family had flown in for this. A small service, a small break from the reality that millions of men were risking their lives for their freedom, country, and the prejudiced people being slaughtered everyday.
A few more people spoke, but Steve didn't listen. He was remembering how many times Bucky had been there for him.
But the one time Bucky needed his help. The one time he counted on him, with his life, Steve had failed. He shouldn't had advanced to the next car, while Bucky dealt with one of the Hydra guards. They should have fought together. But they didn't. But he didn't. And now Bucky was dead.
A sob escaped from Steve's quivering lips, "I'm sorry Bucky. I'm so sorry!"
Outside the church, the sun shone. Everything was bright. It was like even though your best friend died, the world intended to spin on.
It shouldn't be like this, Steve thought, He was my best friend and I let him down.
Bucky had helped him with enlistment, filling out the paperwork and trying to get him into shape. Bucky helped him with his parents deaths. He was always there.
Steve shook his head and walked outside.
Hydra was going to pay for this and he would make sure of it.
