Chapter 13
Warnings: No real warnings, at least to my standards. But just in case I guess I'll mention that intense things happen and Preston gets frustrated.
~Rob's P.O.V.~
"I think we'll be at the mountain today... And hopefully we'll see everyone else along the way. Or at least one person." Preston evaluates, gazing at the mountain ahead.
The previous night had proven to be hard, mobs constantly attacking us as we searched for a place to sleep. Not only that but the worms did not last long, and soon enough we were hungry yet again. Oh and also of course there's the cold factor, certainly not in our favour.
"It's going to be a challenge scaling the mountain too, it looks really steep." I pitch in, taking in the steep tilt of the mountain, especially near the top.
Currently trekking through a clearing the sun is brightly shining in the sky, and ahead a long strip of trees expands before us, stretching on for miles. Although not very important I note that most of the trees are actually pine and spruce, save a few maple or oak trees here and there. The cold is really starting to get to me now, freezing temperatures seeping through my clothing and chilling me to the bone. Well at least it's numbing the pain. I reason glumly, realizing that's probably the only good thing.
Taking another limping step I try to keep the graphic images of my leg out of my mind, not wanting to have another sick session. Every step feels like needles are stabbing into my ankle, and without the help of Preston I would never be able to survive. Ironically enough it's because of Preston I'm like this. Wait, no... It's not his fault. It's just sheer bad luck. I mean a blizzard and wolves at night? Something was bound to happen. Plus it isn't like he was purposely aiming for me.
These random thoughts keep playing through my mind and before I know it, we're approaching the trees right before the mountain.
"Woah look at the size of her." Preston comments, whistling.
We are stopped right before the tree line, the mountain looming over us. He's right, it is absolutely ginormous. It is definitely climbable, yes, but it's so steep near the top that I doubt even the most skilled rock climber could conquer it. It reaches easily past the clouds and near the base a few hardy trees grow from its rocky edges. About 3/5 of the way up snow starts to appear on the mountain, clumped together in incredibly unsteady piles. I watch nervously as a large portion of snow breaks off from the side of the mountain and tumbles down at a fast pace.
"We should wait till tomorrow to climb it. It's past noon right now and I don't wanna be stuck up there finding mobs." I state earning a nod of agreement from Preston.
He starts forward again and brings me along with him as we start into the surrounding trees. And after a good few minutes we come to the rocky ground before the mountain, the trees stopping abruptly before the base. Now that I'm only meters away from the actual mountain itself it seems larger than ever before. And soon enough my eyes find themselves lingering on a giant patch of snow clutching to a particularly steep part of the mountain above us. My gaze flickers to Preston but he doesn't seem to be paying the snow any attention, instead glancing around the ground.
"Let's go look for a cave or somewhere to sleep. It'll protect us from the snow if it starts up again tonight." Preston states, oblivious to the danger above.
"Shh! We have to be quiet. I know it's really far up but look." I whisper harshly, pointing at the snow.
"Oh... That could be a problem. It only proves my cave idea better though. If that stuff falls we will be safe inside and we can dig our way out later."
I roll my eyes, not understanding Preston's way of thinking. But at least he drops his tone of voice to a quieter level.
"How about this. You stay here and I'll go look for a cave or something. That way it'll be easier for both of us since you won't have to move and I won't have to drag you around with me. Then you can keep an eye on your precious snow up there." Preston suggests.
"Sure but make sure you don't make any loud noises okay?" I warn him, but before I know it he's already gone.
Sighing I don't even bother trying to limp somewhere comfortable and instead just plop down on the spot, constantly staring at the snow which seems to be starting to slip. Why on earth am I sitting in the direct path of an avalanche exactly? I glance at my ankle. Right, because I'm basically paralyzed without Preston's help. Wait.
I jump up, my ankle instantly burning with pain. But it's too late. With a sickening crunch the snow starts to slowly slip before its tumbling at an insane rate towards me, a massive wave of cold death. I desperately try to scramble away but it's hopeless. The mass rushes towards me, bleach white snow coming to swallow me whole.
"PREST-"
The snow hits me like a brick wall, my call of help being drowned out in the sea of snow. I'm sent tumbling away inside of the snow, swept in summersaults for seconds before my breath is crushed from my lungs and the whole world goes black.
~A WILD P.O.V. SWITCH APPEARS Preston's P.O.V.~
"PREST-"
Rob's frantic call rings through the air and I whip around just in time to see a wave of snow ram into him, instantly covering his form.
"Oh my gosh, Rob!" I shriek.
I'm frozen to the spot as I helplessly watch the snow absolutely tear through the landscape, trees being toppled over by the avalanches force. I know well enough that trying to find him at this moment would be suicide and I'm forced to stand by as the snow rushes past me at an alarming rate, only slowing down 30 seconds later.
Without a second thought I stumble quickly towards the settling snow, knowing I don't have long before the snow hardens and it's impossible to dig Rob out. If a tree hasn't crushed him already. I tear through the snow, my eyes wildly darting around for any clue to where Rob is submerged. There!
My eyes land on a half covered black shoe sticking up from the snow, and I instantly recognize its Rob's. My throat is dry as I bound over to the shoe, not hesitating in plunging my bare hands into the freezing snow and tossing up handfuls of the cold substance. When I find no sign of Rob in the one area I shift over a few meters, digging there instead. And just as I'm starting to lose hope I dig out one last handful to reveal a section of blue fabric hidden amongst the wreckage.
"Rob, Rob please be okay!" I plea, even though I know he can't hear me.
I frantically scoop away snow, ignoring my hands now probably frost bitten. Finally I uncover a mop of brown hair, telling me he is face down. Using all my strength I roughly grab under his torso and dig my feet into the snow, pulling back hard. Finally I manage to pry him loose from the trap and I fall backwards at the sudden lack of weight.
I scramble to my feet, tears springing to my eyes when I see Rob is insanely pale and unresponsive. I drag Rob out of the snow and onto the ground where the Avalanche didn't hit, taking his wrist into my hand and feeling for a pulse. It's there. Although faint, it's there.
"You're alive! Thank goodness." I rejoice, lifting his limp body off the cold ground. "I need to get you warm, now."
Hoisting him into my arms I awkwardly waddle towards the mountain, leaning him gently against its edge. Then I dash away quickly, searching for a way to make fire.
~Time skip to when he's made fire and has found a cave cuz I'm too lazy to write that stuff~
Sighing in relief I slump down in exhaustion, watching the colour slowly start to return to Rob's face. The sun is setting and I have a fire burning brightly inside the cave, casting warm waves of heat that reflect off the cave walls. I watch Rob anxiously, waiting impatiently for him to wake up. Every second that he stays silent I fear that he will not make it, because even though he's warming up its doesn't mean he hasn't suffered any other injuries. He could be internally bleeding for all I know!
"ARGHHH."
I yell out in frustration, slamming a fist on the ground. The rocks dig into my skin, drawing blood, but I can't care less at the moment. I'm just so fed up with everything! The winter, the mobs, all the injuries, the death, the natural disasters, just... EVERYTHING! I honestly didn't think the snow would fall! And now Rob might die. Not only that but say the others show up, what then? What will we do? Suffer out here forever?!
Before I realize it fresh tracks of tears are spilling out of my eyes, and I sit there, silently crying. Pulling my knees up to my chest I curl up against the cave wall, feeling hopeless and broken. The distant calls of mobs ring out through the cave entrance but I don't even know what to think anymore. That is until I hear a soft 'aww' a couple meters away.
My head shoots up, tears still running down my face and dripping off my chin. Rob's eyes are open fully, and he's sitting up. But his eyes do not show his own hurt, no, they reflect mine.
"Don't cry... Please." He whispers, voice weak.
I sniffle, using the edge of my sleeve to wipe away the steady flow of hot tears.
"I-I thought you were... Dead... And it's ju-just... Every thing is going wrong..." I sob out, failing to stop my emotions.
"I know it's hard. But we're gonna be okay. We're gonna find everyone. And we are going to do something. What that is exactly, I don't know. But we won't be stuck like this forever. And look, I'm alive, so please Preston. Don't cry." Rob soothes, pretty much reading my mind.
"But what's the point?" I whisper, trying to contain my tears, "What do we have left?"
"We all have each other. And a hope that each day will be better, and that eventually even if everything isn't the same... It's going to be alright."
I let the words sink in, effectively calming me down. He's right. Even if nothing is left of our past we still have each other. And that one day we will all be back up to where we originally were. With a new place to call home...
"Heh... When did you become such a great speech giver?" I chuckle lightly, wiping away the few remaining tears.
Rob shrugs and offers a warm smile, "You'd do the same for me if the roles were switched right now."
I chuckle again, this time stronger. Shooting him a grateful look I shift against the cave walls, trying to get comfy.
"Let's just hope that everyone else is doing better than we are right now." I mumble, drowsiness starting to dull my thoughts.
"Yeah... Goodnight Preston."
"Night."
~~~
Oh wow that escalated way quicker than I meant it to. Like that went really deep. Whoops XD
