Chapter Twelve

I paced anxiously around the room which Kieran had left me and told me to wait for his return. I was nervous enough about the entire situation, but to make matters worse I felt like I was a dog waiting for their owner to return. It was dehumanizing.

There was a light knock on the door and it felt like my heart wanted to leap out of my chest. I rushed across the room and open the door, but was surprised to see Quas. In hand he had a large box almost twice his size. "Come on in, I figure we should talk anyways." I said simply, not mentioning the box.

"What is it?" He asked as he entered the room and went straight to the bed to place the box down.

I smiled weakly and closed the door behind him, "I want to talk to you about the forest, I shouldn't have lost my temper and ran away from you. It was childish and uncalled for and I am truly sorry." I paused as Quas stared at me and I was forced to look away. I began pacing around the room once more before I continued, " I did a lot of thinking while I was gone: about home, about my life here, and I even thought about you."

Quas went silent and went wide eyed, "Why would you think about me, have I done something wrong to you?"

I laughed softly and shook my head; he couldn't have been further from the truth. "I thought about you because I felt guilty, not only for what I did, but also how you've been treated for a century now. It baffles me how you don't have a name, what do people call you?" That was one thing I couldn't get over. He had been treated so poorly and yet he still helped me, a complete stranger. With the way Lady Cecilia Venlana treated him I couldn't imagine all the bad he had seen, but he acted like he existed only to help others.

Quas shook his head and shifted his feet along the ground. It was then I realized I had been making him uncomfortable. "People just called me Helmingur or Thing." He admitted and it made my heart plummet into my stomach.

I knelt down to his height and it took me a moment before I said my next thought. "I thought of a name for you, if that's alright?"

"You named me, but why? I am a nobody and you are royalty why would you name me? What do I matter?"

His response broke my heart. Not because he didn't seem happy about getting a name, but because he seemed so shocked by the idea. I wondered what happened to him in the past to make him feel so insignificant. "I came up with a name for you because you're a living creature. You aren't some nobody who doesn't matter. I'm sorry for how you've been treated and I'd like a chance to redeem my race, starting by giving you a proper name."

Quas shook his head no and stared at the ground. "It isn't necessary, now come on we need to get you dressed for dinner. Kieran will be here shortly to escort you. In the meantime he asked me to clean and rebandage your back while he dealt with a pressing matter." Quas said in attempts to remove himself from the topic.

I refused to let the matter drop, this was important to me. "If I let you work, will you at least let me tell you what I was thinking of for a name?" I asked hopefully. If he said no I would have let the matter drop then and there, it was his choice after all.

"Fine, fine, fine, as long as you let me work."

"Agreed" I said with a grin, enjoying my minor victory.

Quas seemed less enthusiastic about my win and he rolled his eyes like an annoyed parent. "Come, sit on the bed." I did what he asked and I felt him climb up on the bed behind me. "I'm going to cut your shirt off now and then I will do the same to your bandages. Grab a blanket and keep yourself covered up, okay?"

I did what he asked and clutched the comforter to my chest. "I was thinking about the name Quas." I said as I heard sound of the scissors cutting the material of my shirt.

My shirt fell forward, "Quas, what does that mean?"

The cool metal of the scissors brush again my back as he started to cut my bandages loose. I knew they were stained with blood and I did my best not to think about it. "Quas, it is short for Quasimodo; he is a character in a book from my world. He's a misunderstood creature who has seen a lot of bad and was used by others and he thought nothing of it. I noticed the similarity between the two of you, thought it would be fitting. If you don't like it you could just say so and I can try and come up with something else."

I heard something that resembled the sniffle behind me and I glanced back confused. "Keep your eyes forward" Quas said with a little more anger than I thought was possible from him. "I don't want to cut you." He explain, his voice getting softer. There was a long silence between us and I assumed that he hated the name. "I like it, thank you Tasnia." He said gently, catching me off guard.

"Are you sure, you can say no." I pointed out to him, but I was glad that he seemed okay with it.

"I do truly like it, now stop talking and hold still so I can get the rest of these bandages off." I laughed and did what he say, remaining still for him.

The tension caused from the bandages around my chest finally loosened and I knew he had cut through them. Quas gasped and shifted on the bed behind me. "Stay here and do not move M'Lady. I need to get Master Kieran." I did not have time to object before Quas jump down from the bed and sprinted out the door. My stomach flipped as I remembered Roman doing almost the same thing when I had first arrived.

I don't know if you can tell or not, but I am a bit of a Disney fan... Either way, I hope you enjoyed this chapter and getting to know our little Changeling a bit better. Figured if I lied to you about Tasnia being a Changeling, I would have to show you what one was really like. Lol.

Once again, if you liked the chapter please vote and/or comment.
