Chapter One

The first night is always the hardest in a new place. For hours I laid in bed, tossing and turning, unable to close my eyes. I finally got comfortable, when my past was buried deep, and sleep was finally within reach... Then my alarm went off. If it was any other day, I would have just rolled over and ignored the alarm, but today was going to be the first day of classes for me though it was already 3 weeks into the semester.

I forced myself out of my warm bed and quickly got ready for classes. I stood in front of the mirror and looked myself over carefully, struggling to remember my old appearance. I chewed on my bottom lip and the reflection staring back at me. It was like looking at a stranger. Between my light skin tone and silver white hair, it was almost impossible to remember the girl I once was. I sighed as I decided to pull my long pin straight hair up into a messy bun and called it good enough.

My eyes skimmed over the loosely fitting black tank top, jean short shorts, and oversized knitted cardigan before landing back on my face. For a second I just stared at my eyes, they were the feature I least liked about myself, the feature which proved how far I was really gone. My once blue eyes were now amber in colour, so radiant that around the pupil there almost looked to be a ring of red. My heart dropped into my stomach and I ripped my eyes away from the mirror. I headed for the door with my bag over my shoulder unable to stare back at my own reflection any longer.

The day was long and boring, the lectures were painful to sit through and I didn't know why I bothered at this point. All of the universities were the same, the Professors saying the same nonsense with no clue as to what they were talking about. I would know, being an immortal being has its advantages when it comes to money and endless amount of time to waste.

Despite having more money than I possibly needed, I still attempted to live as normal of a life as possible. I lived in a dorm when attending a school, this year I had even gotten a job at the campus library (though there was an alternative motive). Despite Winter-Hawking University being a smaller school, it had an amazing Folklore and Mythology program. Additionally, they were said to have one of the best libraries and books containing Folklore information. Most people passed the information off as old stories, but I knew better.

I made a quick stop off to my room to drop off my heavy book bag before making my way to the library for my first shift. The building was impressive, built in 1827 so it was made entirely out of stone and it was in spectacular condition. I walked up the four stone steps, pushed open the heavy wooden door and was instantly met with another dozen steps. I headed up them and I was in awe at the room. There was the main floor with shelves of books along every wall and tables in the middle. There was also a second balcony floor with more bookshelves, even from here I could tell those ones seemed to be older.

I slowly walked further into the library in pure amazement, never seeing anything like this before. I must have looked like a lost puppy because a man cleared his throat from behind the desk, "Can I help you?" He asked gently.

My eyes fell down to the man who spoke and hesitated as I looked him over. He wasn't what I expected a librarian to be; he was tall and well built with sandy blonde hair, strong cheekbones, and a perfectly maintain stubble beard. I looked him in the eyes and all good feelings I had about this man disappeared. It was like two negative magnetics coming together and all I wanted to do was run. I took a step back and the man stood up a bit straighter, seeming to feel it too. "You aren't welcome here," he growled, his nice guy appearance quickly disappearing.

Standing my ground, I shook my head. "I'm supposed to be here, I work here." I protested, refusing to let this unnerving feeling get to me.

The guy acted like I had just slapped him with the way all expression fell from his face, "You're Tasnia? You're the new assistant?" He questioned as if he had heard me wrong.

"That's what I said. Is there a problem with that?"

He didn't reply for a minute as he looked around to make sure no one was around; the library was completely empty. "You're Fae." It wasn't a question, now it was my turn to look completely stunned. "How did you get through?" Whenever someone knew what I was, it never went well for me and I knew that I shouldn't stick around for this. I shook my head and turned to sprint out of the library. "Hey, stop!" He called out and I could hear footsteps after me, "I said stop!" Like any sane person, I didn't stop and I didn't look back. I heard him running after me and I continued to sprint as fast as my petite legs would let me.

Who said there can't be drama in a library?

We welcome into this chapter another main character, Kieran. I hope you all like him because you're just as stuck with him as Tasnia is!
