Chapter 20
My mouth is so dry, I wonder if I could make a sandcastle out of it. That might be a better option than the only other one. The one that involves looking at Josh, looking at him for answers, for anything that might tell me that this is a dream.
"Amelia, trust me," he says, eyes wide and unblinking. "I know it sounds stupid but just trust me on this one."
I don't see how. How can you trust someone who one minute saved you from freezing to death and then is slamming you into walls the next? But when they start making loony stories about what caused a storm, there isn't another need for confirmation.
"I don't believe it," I tell him. "This is stupid. That didn't cause the storm! You didn't cause the storm!"
"Amelia," Joshua sighs, sounding almost weary. "Just believe me, Amelia. Please. Zach—"
"Zach had nothing to do with it!" I cut him off, unaware that my voice is rising and rising. "Stop making up stories! You didn't conjure up a massive storm with your bare hands and Angie's brother had nothing—"
"Is everything alright back there?" a voice says from the kitchen. I stop in mid-sentence, eyes drifting towards Josh. He looks tired.
"Yes, Mum!" I call back. "We're fine!"
"The tea's ready!" she yells.
My eyes snap themselves back to Josh's chocolatey ones. "This isn't over," I hiss. "We're not done with the arguing, Joshy."
"I know," he replies tiredly and pushes his way around me, towards the kitchen. I watch him leave, hearing the murmurings as he talks to my mother.
My head droops. What have you just got yourself into?
