Chapter 15

The last time I wake up is to a soft voice calling me to wake up.

"Wake up, Amelia," it says, "Wake up."

I lift my head slightly to find the owner of the voice and those sweet melty brown eyes stare back at me.

"We're here," Joshua says louder this time, voice breaking from the whisper to normal speech. "It's almost our stop."

The next thing I realise is that hand isn't surrounded by that warm pleasant feeling anymore. Subconsciously, my eyes draw to it. That's when I see Joshua's face turn slightly redder than usual, the kind of colour someone turns when they're embarrassed but don't want to show it.

"What?" I ask him gently when I catch him staring at my hand.

He looks away. "Nothing." Before I can reply, he nudges me slightly. "C'mon. Get out. We're here."

We get off the bus and jump on the next one, which comes almost right away. This one only takes a few minutes but not enough time to take another nap, unfortunately.

As soon as we're off that bus, I know where we are instantly. It's like going back to somewhere after twenty years of missing it. You could say that was my case but I've only been away for a few days.

I look around. The snow's melting. It's all piled up heaps to the side of the roads and now the pavements actually look like pavements again. Otherwise, the town looks like it normally did before.

All around me, sirens wail. Ambulances are parked beside the slush of ice and paramedics enter each of the homes consecutively. I watch their panic-stricken faces as they come out onto the pavement after finding the worst.

Instinctively, my feet take the route they used to take every day to school. Soon I'm on my road and my heart's thumping faster and faster in my chest. There are no ambulances around - they must have only just arrived into the town. I feel sick and pray that my ham and cheese sandwich can stay down a little longer.

I turn the last corner and there it is.

The house.
