Mission 13: Father's Office

"A weird looking key?" Oliver says.

"I have no clue," I say tracing my fingers along the key then pick it up.

"She left a riddle," he says.

"I grow when I eat, but die when I drink. What am I?" I say.

"Well then it's obviously not living," Oliver says.

"But it seems to move," I say.

"Something that grows when it eats and dies when it gets wet," Oliver says.

"Wood is what it eats and water burns it out!" I say.

"It's a fire!" we say.

"So where there's fire must be a fireplace," Oliver says.

"But this house has a fireplace in about every room!" I complain.

"Then let's figure out the next part," Oliver says. "Maybe it will help."

"My life can be measured in hours, I serve by being devoured. Thin, I am quick. Fat, I am slow. I grow shorter, as I grow older. Wind is my foe. Pull me when you figure me out," I say remembering the riddle.

"If wind is it's foe it must be dealing with fire," Oliver says.

"If thin it dies quickly and slowly when fat," I say.

"Its main purpose is to eventually die," Oliver says.

"Fire quickly shortens it..." I say and think.

"Candle!" we exclaim then laugh.

"The fireplace has a candle on it and we pull it," I say.

We look to the fireplace in our parents' room. There are no candles on top of it.

"Well, it's not this fireplace," Oliver says.

"It's not the one in our room either," I say.

"If our parents kept it a secret from us it must of been in a room where you could lock the door, so we wouldn't see," Oliver says.

"Father's office!" we say.

We grab the letters and cube. Then we exit the room and walk towards Father's office.

Once we arrive we kinda stare at the doors again. In sync we put our hands on the door handles and open them.

Straight away we both look towards the fireplace. There sitting in the middle of the fireplace is a single candle.

Then something catches my eye on Father's desk. Another envelope and cube.

"Oliver," I say pointing to the desk. "Look."

"Another?" Oliver asks.

"Seems so," I say.

We walk to the desk and I pick up the envelope and pull out the letters.

"Dear Abbigail and Oliver,
If you're reading this then that means me and your mother have died."

(Wow, real subtle, Father...)

"This cube has very valuable information inside of it. Don't lose it. You're Mother should've given you the other cube. We decided to hide this from you until we both died. We didn't want you guys getting hurt somehow. You'll understand what I mean when you get there. Don't let anyone receive this information. Don't trust anyone. Only trust each other. This matter was probably the cause of our deaths. ~ Sincerely, Father."

Oliver looks at me and I hand him the paper then I read the other papers.

"Dear Oliver,
Hey my boy, if you're reading this that means I have died. I wish I could be there to watch you grow up. So we could play sports with each other and I could tell you the way of men. Tell you what to do if you like a girl and how to get her. Get through your manly changes and what not. Protect your sister from any bullies and be the strong man I know you can be. You are my smart little man you can figure out how to get back at the bullies. If I was there I would ruin that child's life if he/she messes with my little girl!"

Again my eyes fill with tears. (Father... I love you...)

"Your Mother says that you'll be an actor when you grow up. I can believe it. You have just the right amount of pizazz and you love attention. I would rather you be the head of the company, but there's always the possibility that you can do both. I know how you can multitask. You're going to turn into a fine young man one day. That's because you're my boy! I know you'll do great things! I'm gonna miss you so much! ~I love you son and this is goodbye, Father."

"Is that one mine?" Oliver asks. I hand him it. "Thanks."

(Alright, my turn. Don't cry...)

"Dear Abbigail,
Hey banana, If you're reading this that means I have passed away. I wish I could be there to watch my little girl grow up. To make sure the boys that you date are good enough for you. I'm sure your brother will do it for me though and make sure to ruin his life if he breaks your heart. Your Mother says that you're gonna be an amazing singer one day. I can totally see that happening. Every second you can, you sing and your no too bad. I mean you are now since you're young, but your voice will mature. I know you'll grow up to be an amazingly beautiful young woman. I mean you have your Mother's looks. You're the older twin you know, I don't think we ever told you that. You're exactly 5 minutes older. And since you are the older one you need to protect your brother like he will protect you. Also, another thing you should know, when your brother was born he wasn't as strong as you. He was a weak newborn and not very healthy. He's as strong as he is because we paid a lot of money for him to be that way. If we didn't he would of died by age 5."

I gasp causing Oliver to look at me confused. (Oh. My. God. What...)

"I figure that your going to let your brother read this, so I'm gonna say sorry. I know your smart, incredibly smart in fact. You're gonna succeed no matter what you do, both of you. So my little girl I'm gonna miss you so much. ~I love you baby girl and this is goodbye, Father."

I hurriedly hand the letter to Oliver and wipe away my tears. After about 2 minutes you hear Oliver gasp. I can see him moving his hand over his mouth in shock. He finishes the letter and lays it on the desk.

"Everything is just piled on me today, isn't it?" Oliver asks.

I bring him into my arms once again. "I know," I say.

"My whole life is just a huge lie," Oliver says and quietly sobs

"I know," I say. "Let's open the cube."

Oliver sniffs and nods. "Alright," he says.

We press our fingerprints against the cube and it slowly unravels. Revealing a...
