48. Life Goes On

Third Person’s P.O.V.

“She did!” “She did not” Kook spoke without even looking at Hobi as he continued playing with her.

“I’m telling you she did!”

“It’s impossible for her to call you uncle…she’s only three weeks old Hobi!” Jimin retorted listening to them, while Minjae kept whining to him to be picked up because he couldn’t see his li’l friend as she lay majestically in her crib, busy in her exploration of Yoongi’s hand by her head and absolutely unbothered while they peered and gushed over her.

“You all look like old people delighted to have a grandchild” Namjoon spoke from the door frame, frowning at all of them huddled around the baby. He walked closer and pulled Minjae into his arms, the boy giving him the list of new things they had seen Soohee do that day.

“So, how’s Taehyung?” Jimin asked Joon and their eyes moved to him.
“He’s okay…physically” Namjoon sighed smiling unmindfully as he saw Soohee beat her hands and grasp at the watch on Yoongi’s wrist “he’s just trying too hard to hold himself together, I don’t blame him…this is no lesser than going through hell itself”.

He gently caressed Minjae’s head, “I’d go crazy if I couldn’t come back to my family at the end of the day. What he’s going through is a torture of a different kind”

They fell into a thoughtful silence before Jin walked in, towelling his wet hair and instantly his eyes were aglow “hey, did you get to meet him? How is he?”

“How are you?” Namjoon inquired instead, remembering Taehyung’s heightened concerns about Jin and about how he was healing, checking up with the doc or not and taking good care of himself.

“Three more weeks and I’ll be good to go out of the house, the stitches are healing fine” he spoke coming around to the familiar picture of Hobi, Yoongi and Kook surrounding the child like pillars, barring even the slightest gust of wind that could make her feel uncomfortable.

“She said you’re out of danger after three weeks, and a month more before you can go back to normal life” Yoongi corrected him, still busy in scribbling stuff while the child played happily with his other hand. Once in a while he’d just stop working and watch her with a poker face, a finger gently nudging her bloated cheeks before he went back to working again.

Jin didn’t say anything in reply, rather inquired about Taehyung, feeling sad since he wasn’t in a position to go to visit him and knew how hard it must be for him going through this time all alone. He couldn’t wait to tell him everything about their little girl.

He loved how Soohee was adored by every single person who met her, although being surrounded by her over-protective guardians made her a bit moody and a frown would often creep up her brows whenever some new face would want to coddle her.

When the others weren’t around she’d desperately cling onto Jin, she was choosy about attention but demanded all of it when she was with the family. And although she believed she had an upper hand over all of them, her bossiness and demands were the highest when it came to Kook, merely for the reason that Kook had literally enslaved himself to her.

First thing in the morning and last thing before going to bed Soohee would demand to be sang to. And Jin had come to know of this exquisite gift in Kook by mere coincidence.

It was one of those bad days when he just couldn’t get her to calm down and pulled at his hairs not knowing how to make her stop yelling and crying at the top of her lungs. He gave up leaving her in her crib and just plopped down on the bed, exhausted. Jungkook had been watching him and had even opted to help but Jin had denied not knowing it could be this difficult. So, when he saw Jin throw an arm over his eyes as he tried to calm down and not cry out as well due to the building frustration within, Jungkook thought he could try out the suggestion he had taken before…to help them calm down while he sang to them.

What he hadn’t expected was having Jin’s teary eyes gaze at him in wonder as he sang to her and smiled widely to see the little one forget her wails and watch him enrapt.

And as she settled down, he caressed her brunette locks “you like that?” Her little ecstatic giggle was all the answer he needed, so that was how it had become a routine and she wouldn’t sleep or begin her day without having fulfilled her wish of listening to Kook sing for her.

Many such instances followed till apart from work Jungkook’s routine became comprised of nothing but spending all his time with Soohee.

“She’s going to catch a cold Kook” Jin whined as he watched him stand in the middle of the front lawn although it was practically freezing outside. It was just past Thanksgiving and people had begun putting up the Christmas lights, and Jungkook had figured that Soohee loved watching the decorations. Her eyes glowed brighter than the lights nimbly creating stars in her dark irises.

“But she loves it…look at her” he cooed as she made grabby hands at all the gold n red decorations around, and Jin rolled his eyes “of course she loves it, all kids love sparkly stuff” he came to stand beside them and checked to see if she was bundled up warmly enough.

“I think we should put up decorations too…at least for her” Jungkook thought out loud, his gaze falling back at her as he watched her mumble n sputter in baby “after all, it’s her first Christmas”.

Jin couldn’t believe how much her presence seemed to change everything around.

Yoongi now had an evening routine with her, the man who had forever overworked and came home at ungodly hours would be back sharp at seven and spent the rest of the evening listening to her giggles and gurgles as he worked. Hoseok had promised to control his cursing because they had a kid in the household now and Jungkook more or less now lived there, often choosing to sleep on the couch rather than driving back to his empty little apartment. Jimin and Namjoon would come over on the weekends and Minjae wouldn’t leave her side till it was time to go back home.

The only lack was Taehyung…and Jin would often find himself fabricating scenes in his head of how it would be if Tae was there, adding in on the love his child seemed to draw from everyone around her. He’d imagine what would Tae’s expressions be like when he’d meet her the first time, get to hold her and let her know what she had missed out on even though everyone tried their very best to give her more than she could ask for.

Jin had been collecting snaps of their homely experiences with her, hoping to catch every little moment of her so that he could give it to Taehyung…he didn’t want him to miss anything.

Hence when Jin could finally go back to normal life and he reluctantly left Soohee in Kook’s arms to go visit Taehyung, he took that little book of treasures with him.

“And you wouldn’t believe how smart she is…like she’d get annoyed and whiny if Yoongs comes late someday due to some emergency coming up, I mean how does she even know that it’s half past seven…she’s like only a couple months old! It’s so weird…” Jin huffed smiling widely as he zealously spoke to Taehyung who listened to every word being completely stupefied, his eyes keenly focused as he gazed at the pictures Jin had assembled for him to see how adorable and bossy his little girl was.

“God is she a demanding one! I wonder where she gets its though…I mean, I’m nothing like that!” Jin spoke to earn a chuckle from Taehyung. “I’m not joking, she literally has everyone on a leash and the worst victim is Kook, she knows how adorable she is!”

He smiled to himself as he caught her first toothless laugh, the way she was lying on her crib stuffing her toes in her mouth, sleeping, angry, wailing, scolding Hobi for tickling her breathless, and embracing Jungkook like he was her very own soft toy.

Taehyung was elated but he couldn’t deny the pang of jealousy that surged within him to see Jungkook get to live what he’d die to have. He tried not to show this side to Jin, wanting him to stay just as delighted as he looked at the moment.

However, he couldn’t help but grumble when Jin kept on talking about how she had effectively learnt to use Kook as her personal bodyguard, looking for him whenever she got scolded for being troublesome.

“He’s not even that good of a soldier…I’d be way better at it” he spoke under his breath, keeping his gaze fixed on the images he shuffled through “it’s really ironical” he softly scoffed to himself and Jin caught the trace of malice in his voice.

“Tae-“ “What? I’m just saying you know…he isn’t even a real soldier” he shrugged and Jin’s exhilaration dampened a little realising he probably didn’t like the thought of everyone enjoying in full what he wasn’t allowed to but then realized that he was just being jealous of Jungkook.

“You’re sulking” he leaned to put his chin on his palm as he gazed at Taehyung, biting down the smile. It was tiny but the annoyed pout on his lips made Jin giggle a little “you know, no one would believe that you’re the same man who infiltrated a terrorist organization and killed more than a hundred people if they saw you right now”

Jin saw his eyes snap up to stare at him and it seemed as if he was revisiting those troublesome memories before his gaze softened on him, turning to the same affectionate ones Jin loved having on him.

“Well, I’m not that person anymore…” Jin saw him caress a picture of Soohee weeping dramatically with pursed lips “I have hurt a lot of people with these hands…now I wanna use them to care and protect” and Jin felt his chest tighten at those words, tearing up a little as he gulped in a big breath.

“You will, and I’m sure you’re going to be an amazing father to her” Jin said aloud about what he believed and he couldn’t hold back his smile when he saw Taehyung look down, scratching at the back of his head as he smiled like someone not used to being complimented.

“I really can’t wait to see her” Taehyung spoke gazing at another image of Minjae pecking at her nose “jeez” and his frown was back “why the hell is everyone all over her? It’s not okay…she’s so tiny, she might catch something from them”

Jin could see he was genuinely concerned but told him that he was just being paranoid.

“Stop it Tae…they love her” Jin laughed at his grumbles although it did little to assure the other, who kept up with his complaints every time he’d see someone coddling his daughter in a way that he didn’t approve of. He took up grumbling against him after that, and Jin felt like he was being interrogated as Taehyung inquired about his health, about the follow-ups and agreed to Jin’s decision of not going back to work right away.

And that night as Jin cooked dinner with Yoongi and told them about his visit while the rest could see him completely rejuvenated as they caught the happy glow on him, they couldn’t help but reminisce about the days they had struggled through to get here. It wasn’t easy, demanded tremendous patience and the will to fight on yet looking at it all from where they were today everything looked like an essential hurdle because somehow every little bit of those days had contributed in shaping what they had today.

Jin glanced often times at Soohee as they had dinner, knowing that six more months would go by in a wink…and yes he’d try his best to grasp at those fleeting moments of her growing up in his camera till Taehyung could come home and get his fill of coddling her in his own way, so that he wouldn’t have to be jealous of those who could.

He glanced around, the family loud and happy in their own way…funny how an odd combination of a colonel, a doctor, a barista, a photographer, a soldier and a guy who was still looking around for his identity had come together to sit around a table and be as domestic as life could be. He had been such a naïve guy even a year back, being solely confined in his life and not knowing what living would really feel like only to collide with the man who’d take him on the wildest adventure he could ever imagine.

And he came to the conclusion that people change, things end and yet life goes on…and he was eager to live on as he looked forward to new beginnings, since now that he had survived the shadows of yesterday, the future looked prettier.
