Three weeks later...

I was working in my cabin when my advocate, Mr. Mehta, barged in without even knocking. He looked frantic, his usually calm demeanor replaced with palpable anxiety.

"What have you done, Mr. Shah? I told you not to do it! You've spoiled everything. I'm sorry, but your impulsive action will cost you a lot more than you expected," he said, almost breathlessly.

"Calm down! What happened?" I asked, my irritation barely masking my growing concern.

"Your divorce papers have already been filed," he said, and I was shocked.

"What? How? When and why?" I asked, the words tumbling out of my mouth without me even realizing it.

"They were filed today. Their advocate filed them and informed me since I had prepared the papers."

But why didn't she say anything before doing it?

Why would she, after everything you did? How could you do and say all that? My inner voice retorted immediately.

"Oh... okay... well, if it is already done, what can I do about it? Tell me what is to be done?"

"You go and talk to your wife! She can take them back," he urged.

"I don't know..." I hesitated.

"You have to do something, or you will not get your share of your grandfather's wealth," he said, trying to push me into action.

"I am not concerned about the will at the moment," I said, more to myself than to him.

"You should be. It is a hell of a lot of money," he said, clearly frustrated with my lack of urgency.

"Please, leave me alone, and don't tell Dad about it," I said, and he left, shaking his head in exasperation.

What the hell? Why did she take such a drastic step all of a sudden?

You are asking this after the way you behaved with her? My inner voice chided me again.

But I said what was correct, didn't I?

So you mean to say that she is lying? How can she tell such a lie? And you accused her of such a thing without any proof. Maybe you really...

No, I didn’t... and I just said what I was feeling.

Then why are you so upset?

I leaned back in my chair, staring at the ceiling. The past few weeks began to replay in my mind, a whirlwind of confusion, jealousy, and misunderstanding.

Tami and I were in a marriage of convenience, more like roommates than husband and wife. It wasn't supposed to be like this, not entirely. There was a time when I thought we could make it work, and find some semblance of normalcy. But everything changed after that day at the hospital.

(Day after he heard her talking to his dad)

Tami had called me at 6 AM telling me to go to the hospital because she wanted to come home to cook some breakfast for Dad. I reached there as soon as I could and was surprised to see Dr Rajvanshi there flirting with her and she was laughing.

What was he up to??

I cleared my throat and went in. Tami saw me and got up immediately.

" Great, now that you are here, I will go home, Dad has to have his breakfast at 8:30 AM. I will be back before that." She said, picked up her bag and was about to go out when that doctor said, " Well if you are going to make breakfast, please make some extra for me as well. " She just nodded with a smile and went out.

" Well, Dr Rajvanshi, what brought you here? " I asked.

" Well, I just got up a bit early so came to the hospital to spend some time with Siddh, but he got some patients. He told me earlier that Tami stayed here with Mr Shah so I came to meet her. " He told me.

How convenient for you...

" Don't you have to go back to your work?" I said.

" Of course, now that she is gone, I am also going and will be back to savor some delicacies prepared by Tami. She has always been a very good cook. I would love to eat anything she makes. " He said.

What the hell!!

He has joined the hospital to work or flirt with... girls?? Can't Siddh see how his friend is flirting with Tami?

" Well, once she comes back with the breakfast, I will send the breakfast to your department. Now please don't waste your precious time, go back to your work. " I said sarcastically.

" Oh, please do not bother to send it, I will be here, it will be a pleasure to savor and praise the delicacies in front of her. I am sure she likes it too. " He replied.

Finally, he went out after giving me a somewhat sarcastic smile.

I spent the next hour pacing around my dad’s room, checking my watch every few minutes. Dad was still asleep, oblivious to my inner turmoil. I couldn't get Dr. Rajvanshi’s smirking face out of my mind.

Why did he have to be so annoyingly charming and familiar with Tami? My wife, I reminded myself. Even if our marriage was one of convenience, she was still my wife.

Finally, at precisely 8:15, Tami walked in carrying a couple of tiffins. Her hair was slightly disheveled from the rush, and a light sheen of sweat glistened on her forehead, but she looked radiant as always. I stood up from my chair and greeted her with a strained smile.

“Hey, I am here, you can go back now,” she said cheerfully, placing the tiffins on the table.

Was she for real??
