♘Chapter 1♘

My straight long hair danced in the wind when I sat on the roof top with my gaze fixed on the clear blue sky decorated with white puffy clouds. My hair style was kept the same way, but the length has grown to my mid thighs. This is my way to show that I am proud of my hair and also a thank you to Levi for giving me the courage.

"C-Captain Mae! The colossal Titan has appeared a-again! Y-You're needed immediately!" My fellow subordinate stuttered with a bright blush spread across his face.

I was never scary, so I never understood why my underlings often stutter in my presence.

I hopped down the roof swiftly and headed to the Scouting Legion headquarters.

That's right, I am a captain on par with Levi. My skills with the blades aren't as strong as Levi, but I am very proud of my agility with the 3D Manuever Gears. My skills in controlling my movements in the air gave me a boost to succeed in a fight. With Levi being the leader of the Special Operations, I was promoted to be leader of the Medical Operations.

I rushed to the place where the members of Scouting Legion gathers before a mission and I stood at the front of the line with Levi, Hange, Mike and Dita as squad leaders.

"Levi, Mike, head to the rear guard. Mae, stay in the centre with your Medical Operations, I believe you know best how to arrange them. Hange, escort the citizens into Wall Sina. Dita, stay near Wall Sina's gate and fend off all Titans."

"Yes, sir!" We saluted.

"Scouts, MOVE OUT!" Those were Erwin's command for the day.

I divided my members into three teams; a team of six members patrol the front lines, a team of four scout around Wall Sina. My members move in pairs because safety is our first priority followed by treating casualties.

You see, it is not easy to be in the Medical Operations. Nothing is easy anyway. Being good in medical is not the only requirement. A member of Medical Operations must also be skilled in moving around with the gears. We have two very common nicknames: Angels and Grim Reapers. I prefer the latter, because it's true that most of the time our comrades who we saved die in our arms. Angels? It's not everyday we actually save somebody, but I cannot deny that the establishment of the Medical Operations squad decreased the percentage of deaths, even though a little.

Farlan is my second-in-command of the Medical Operations. As for Isabel, she only managed to become one of the members of Special Operations because she's hot headed and lack of leadership.

"Mae!" Farlan called after me when I was ready to take off alone.

The team leader and the second-in-command are allowed to patrol alone because they both must be very skilled in fighting. Farlan was offered a chance to enter the Special Operations, but he refused because I was a step ahead of recruiting him to join my team.

I flipped my head around with my hair tied into a high ponytail. He stopped in front of me and snaked an arm around my small waist, pulling me into his warm embrace. His heart beat rapidly against my ear, the rhythm getting stronger and stronger while his grip became tighter and firm. His muscles flexing beneath the thick jacket sent shivers down my spine. A fresh scent of grass invaded my nostrils when I wrapped my arms around him, burying my face closer to his chest.

"Be safe, alright?" His whispers muffled by my thick silver white hair.

"I would say the same thing to you." I simply smiled as I said so. "We must resume our job, we have a city to save."

He reluctantly pulled away and uttered,"Just stay alive." With that, he turned away, leaving me to watch his retreating back.

I grasped my blade and dashed for each Titan I see. A 5 metre class Titan was found on my left, I ran on the roof to save up my gas; then I ran and jumped gracefully onto the back of his neck, immediately slicing the nape with my blade. Blood spluttered out and stained my clothes, but it evaporated away into nothingness, the same goes to the dead Titan body.

Suddenly, I felt the hair on the back of my neck stand; so I spun around to only catch the sight of four 6-12 meter class Titans charging towards me. It seems I was the only human in this area. Somehow, this scene reminded me of the incident years ago. Back when I was still a recruit.

I was just a recruit.

"We have no choice but to fight! Your orders, Flagon?" Sayram shouted while keeping his gaze on the Titans.

"WE FIGHT!!!" Flagon yelled out loud and charged straight ahead on his horse.

Farlan and I exchanged worried glances, but followed suit to jump into battle.

I leaped in the air and my body danced in the wind like fluid. I took down a Titan with ease by inflicting clean cuts across the nape of their necks which was said to be their weak spot. Before my victim disintegrate, I kicked their back to boost myself towards another Titan head first. It seemed to spot me because he opened his mouth wide, attempting to swallow me whole. Although I am still new in fighting Titans, I had more than enough training and lessons ever since I was very young of age.

I flipped my body by kicking my legs upwards and stepped on his nose; then I jumped without the use of the gas and dropped behind his back after successfully slicing the back of his neck horizontally. However, just as I was falling, a Titan threw his head on me with an open mouth, exposing his disgusting cavern which seemed like a human's but lacks of cleanliness. The action was too quick for me to process and react, but I had one thing in my mind.

I'm going to die.

I closed my eyes tightly and held my breath, preparing for the pain to course through my body and bearing the guilt of failing my father's wishes.

"I'm sorry.. Father..." I whispered under my breath.

A strong arm grabbed me by my waist and I felt myself being carried in the wind for a short moment. Droplets of blood splattered onto my face and I could feel them staining my shirt. Whose blood? I do not know. Once the person who held me in his arms landed onto the ground and placed my feet gently on the soft grass, I opened my eyes to be greeted by a blood stained face.

"FARLAN!" I shouted and held both of his arms tightly, in fear that he was hurt and would collapse any minute.

He chuckled at my reaction and soothed me,"I'm fine, Mae."

He pointed to his back and I followed it's direction. The Titan whom almost had me in it's belly have his face split into half which I assumed Farlan had sliced to save me. Before letting it regenerate, I raised my blade and soared into the air. With one slice, he was done for. The blood stains disintegrated almost immediately and I could see Farlan's slightly tanned face again when he stood next to me.

"Thank you. For saving me." I beamed a genuine smile under the sunlight. My hair shined under the light rays of light, casting a natural gleam over my face.

From Farlan's expression, it showed that he was deep in thought because his eyes looked distant, but it sparkled in awe and a faint blush painted on his tanned cheeks. Before I could say anything, a horrifying scream pierced the air and deafened my ears. Farlan winced and furrowed his eyebrows with his eyes widened in shock as his gaze was fixed behind me.

I spun around and knew we were both in trouble.

An incomplete corpse laid a few feet across the field. Organs were seen covered in blood and some bits of bones scattered around the area where the body is bitten. A pair of eyes bulged out from the head our fellow teammate, Sayram. The other half of his body was left unfound, but it was safe to assume that the Titan has it in it's stomach.

Not only that, a 12 meter class Titan was feasting on Flagon as we watched. His screams filled the air, but it slowly died down as the sound of his bones crushing were heard from the Titan's mouth. A hand which held a blade dangled down the Titan's chin and dropped on to the ground with the blade stabbing the mud and the grip of his hand loosened, then fell off.

"F-Flagon.." I muttered in horror, choking back my tears.

There were two more Titans to deal with and both of us are left all alone in this wide field.

"I'll take that down!" Farlan said in a commanding voice and launched to kill the Titan who ate Flagon alive.

I ran behind him and headed for the other Titan who stood behind Farlan's target. I jumped in the air with the help of the gas and flew around the mindless Titan. Reaching the back of his neck, I used my blade to slash it open, pouring droplets of blood on my body.

Once the Titan I attacked disintegrated, I found Farlan laying on the ground with a blade protruding from his stomach. My eyes widened in shock and my heart skipped a beat at the awful sight. A heavy lump formed in my throat and all I could so was stare. The image was in my mind, but it could not process properly. Let alone send signals to my body on what to do.

I did not know how he ended falling on Flagon's blade, but he did. Blood seeped through his clothes, drenching his white uniform in dark red. The Titan he failed to bring down had it's head heading towards him. As though my body had a mind of it's own, it automatically rushed to the Titan and with a flick of my hand, the nape of the back of the neck was sliced open. My eyes was still glued to Farlan's eyes as I watched it slowly lose it's glow. I dropped beside him and cried in worry.

His tired gaze fixed on my sad expression. Tears pricked around the corner of my eyes as I gripped his half out stretched hand.

"Farlan.." I uttered softly.

He smiled gently at me and tried to speak, but he was interrupted by stomping footsteps. More were coming.

I gave Farlan one last look before speeding off and kill the Titan which caused the interruption before it kills us. To my right is another Titan, so I jumped from the murdered Titan to it and swiftly cut the back of his neck with the same blade I have been using since the beginning.

Behind me, I could hear a faint, forceful scream filled with tremendous pain and it sent a jolt down my spine as if I was the one experiencing the pain. Suddenly remembering the only living human being other than me, I swallowed a gasp from escaping my lips and flew towards Farlan in an instant. However..

I was too late.

The Titan had Farlan in it's mouth.

I grabbed Farlan's hand which was left hanging outside the Titan's mouth. With one powerful pull, Farlan's body was pulled into my embrace, carefully avoiding the blade to stab me, but I failed to save his right arm which was eaten by the last Titan standing.

A croaked groan escaped his bloody lips as he tried his best to suppress a painful scream.

A clear stream of tears flowed down my pale cheeks to see my best friend in such a state. He was losing so much blood and I knew he would die from blood loss. Not to mention, I was in pain by seeing him suffer such wounds.

My heart hammered my chest as my eyes lit up in fury. With a heartbreaking battle cry, I flew to the back of the Titan's neck and stabbed the left side of the neck, then bury the blade deep into the flesh before dragging it across to the other side, listening to the tissues rip apart, successfully killing it and the neck disconnected from the body.

"MAE!" A familiar voice called out from the woods.

Two horses with a figure sitting on each appeared from between the trees. Their gaze scanned across the area and stopped when they caught the sight of Farlan.

Not a single word was uttered when I clung onto Farlan desperately as I sat on the horse, racing towards the gates.

Commands were tuned out from my mind because I only had one goal in mind.

I must save Farlan.

I smirked to myself, but my eyes glistened in sadness as I remembered the incident.

Until today, I still own the feeling of guilt hidden deep within my heart. It was not because I felt guilty of not being able to save my other teammates. I have long accepted the fact that death was inevitable and I do not hold enough power to ensure the safety of others.
