Chapter 28
Everything was black.
Her body felt numb, she couldn't move. Her ears had continued to ring even as she drifted off to sleep. She could feel herself wake up and then fall back asleep over and over again. She never opened her eyes, she couldn't, almost as though they had been sealed shut.
She could hear dragons talking around her, but she couldn't make out their voices. But, she was starting to memorize them. There sounded to be three dragons, but the third one seemed to only be there for half the day at least. The third one always sounded familiar, but she couldn't put her tongue on it at first, but she soon figured it out after she started to gain her memory back.
If she was being honest, her head hurt to even think. All she could really remember at first was her name and who she was, but after a while, she could think back to her family, she had one of those and she loved them. She started to remember more as time passed on, but, she couldn't remember anything after flying up into the sky within a beautiful sunset with a dragon named Salamander.
A gorgeous hybrid with beautiful patchy scales and eyes that seemed to sparkle like emeralds, just like the jewels that adored her body around her neck, her wrist and the scales above her eyes. She had a gorgeous SandWing frill that looked to wave off to the side with a curl in the front that almost looked to wave or bounce whenever she moved.
I want to see her again, Lavender thought as she was still lying still on what ever soft surface she was set upon. She couldn't move her body or open her eyes to find out where she was or who she was with.
She was pulled from her thoughts as she heard talons tapping on the floor, growing closer to her until she hears a door open and someone walk in whatever room she was in.
"Has she woken up yet?" It was the first dragon she heard when she woke, so she just called them One.
One sounded to be female, her voice rough and scratchy as though she hadn't drank water in a long time.
"No," sighed the second dragon. Who she'd named Two. He sounded male, his voice sounding soft like feathers. "She hasn't moved since she got here. I'm starting to wonder if she'll even ever wake up."
I'm awake! I can hear you! She wanted to scream but her body wouldn't move.
"I know," huffed One as she walked over to Lavender's bed. "But she did slam into those rocks rather hard and there's a chance that even if she does wake up, she might never be able to walk, fly or even move ever again."
"As her family been informed yet? Salamander mentioned she had a family in the rainforest."
"I don't know. I sent Salamander off today to find a messenger to deliver the letter I wrote for the family. I told her either she could find someone to deliver it or she could deliver it herself."
"Well, she hasn't come by all day since early this morning when you sent her out, so maybe she chose to deliver it herself."
"Maybe, the poor lass needs to take some time to blow some steam. She's been visiting every single day and I swear she'd live here if we let her." One huffed.
Lavender could feel One's talons brush against her wing. She wanted to twitch it in response but she couldn't move it no matter how hard she tried.
"Well, she is the patients girlfriend is she not?"
Girlfriend? Lavender's mind wondered as One removed her talons from Lavender's wing.
"I only know that's she's important to Salamander." One huffed as her talons seemed to make her way over to Two.
The two continued to talk and Lavender started to grow bored with their conversation. Sometimes One would only hum in response, which Two would seem to take as a full response unlike Lavender.
The small hybrid let her mind wander before she let herself drift to sleep, her body still motionless and unresponsive.
-~-~-~-~-~-
"Lavender?"
The small hybrid listened to the voice, it was Salamander. The hybrid sounded hopeful yet defeated. She wished she could see her face but even if she could, it would probably hurt to see Salamander's expression.
"I wish you could speak to me." The hybrid sighed.
Lavender felt Salamander's head rest against her shoulder, as though in some way, her touch could make her wake up.
After a few moments of silent, a song filled Lavender's ears, a familiar one. Salamander was humming softly and the tune was soft, relaxing.
I'm so sorry Salamander, she thought as she continued to listen to Salamander humming. It felt like years had gone by, Salamander humming as though she were trying to sing a dragonet to sleep, and Lavender just laid motionless as she listened. She wished she could tell Salamander she enjoyed her humming, but she couldn't.
Salamander's humming filled her ears as Lavender focused on trying to open her eyes.
If I can just see her! That's all I ask! She wanted to scream, but she couldn't. All she could see was black.
She contend to try, it felt as though she were trying to force her way through sludge so thick that it cling to her body and pulled her right back to the start, but in a flash, her eyes opened.
Light flooded in as though to greet her, which in turn caused her eyes to narrow to protect themselves and allow her to get used to the blinding light. It took a few moments before her eyes started to adjust so she could see the world around her for the first time in days. How long even was it? She could hardly tell the days apart so she'd stopped trying a long time ago, how long ago? She didn't know.
She contend to listen to Salamander's humming as she used her eyes to look around the room. It was a large hut and she looked to be laid out on a soft bed. She could see Salamander's body slumped slightly against the floor as her head was still rested over Lavender's shoulders. Her pink eyes scanned over the room and she could see tables and bookshelves as well as large windows that let in the early suns morning light.
The bookshelves were full of books, both thick and slim. The table by one of the large open windows, that looked to be two and a half wing lengths away, was covered in open scrolls, bowls and a few herbs that looked to have been rolled up and put into piles. She could see some of the rolled up herbs were hung from the roof with that looked to be thing strands of rope. There was a calming smell that seemed to flow around the room softly, one that made Lavender relax and feel at ease.
Salamander continued to hum and Lavender could feel the older hybrid shift to lean back slightly. That's when their eyes locked together in a stare. Salamander's eyes widened while Lavender's were half lidded.
"Lavender?" Lavender wanted to respond to her, but she couldn't, she could only watch the other hybrids movements. "Lavender!"
Salamander practically threw herself back at Lavender, her strong forearms wrapping around the smaller purple hybrids small body.
"You're awake! Your finally awake! How do you feel? Are you alright?"
Lavender was flooded with questions, none that she could respond to. I wish I could speak with you, I really do, she wanted to tell her that but her mouth wouldn't move.
Salamander must've noticed Lavender's lack of a response, so she let her go, softly laying Lavender back down and looked back at her face.
"Lavender, can you hear me? Can you speak?"
I can't respond to you!
"Um, try gripping my talons, come on!" Lavender could feel and see Salamander's talons wrap around one of hers, holding it close to her chest by her emerald necklaces. She could feel Salamander give her talons a light squeeze, but she couldn't squeeze back, she couldn't let her know that she could see her.
She didn't know what was worse.
Salamander not knowing she was awake or Salamander not being able to know if she could hear her or not.
The SandWing-NightWing hybrid seemed to slump slightly when Lavender didn't squeeze back, her ears drooping. The sight crushed Lavender.
Before Salamander could speak, the door opened and voiced could be heard.
One and Two are back! She thought as her eyes tried to see where they were but she couldn't see them since they weren't in her line of sight yet, but they sounded to be getting closer.
"She's awake!" Salamander roared, quickly gaining the attention of One and Two. Lavender could hear their talons tapping on the floor as they rushed into the room.
"She is?" Two said, hope flooding into his voice.
"How?" One questioned.
When they both came into Lavender's line of sight, her eyes widened along side theirs. They were so much different from what Lavender had pictured them to look like.
One was an old SandWing with small wings that looked to small to be able to let her fly. She had glasses balancing upon her snout with chains that hooked onto the sides of them, reaching over to her horns where they were attached to small silver horn bands. Her black eyes seemed to pop against her pale sandy scales that seemed slightly tanned in tone. Her frill was short compared to Salamander's, but not by much.
Two was a young looking SkyWing with pale pink scales, scales Lavender had never seen on a SkyWing before. His eyes were a soft blue, almost as pale as the sky, yet there looked to be speckles of gold that formed a golden speckles ring around his iris. Around his neck was a pouch that's strap looked to be covered in thick fur that wrapped around her neck. It looked to be fur that would've once belonged to either a bear or a wolf. The young pink SkyWing also had gloves on his front talons that had holes that let his talons out, they looked to mostly just be for the pads of his claws. At the top of the gloves, they were lined with the same fur around his neck.
"Three moons," Two said in awe before he smiled. "She is awake!" He rushed forwards and looked Lavender in the eye. "Hey, can you move any parts of your body? Maybe just an ear twitch or something?"
"Avian, give the lass some space you spastic lizard." Two grunted as she pushed One, who Lavender now new was named Avian, out of the way gently.
"Sorry Parva." Avian smiled nervously.
Two, who was actually named Parva, looked at him for a few moments before she huffed and turned her gaze over to Lavender.
"You too Sally, maybe you should go get some more lavender and rosemary?"
"But I just got some two days ago!" Salamander protested, earning a glare from the old SandWing.
"And you hardly got some two days ago, so go off and gets some more." The elderly SandWing started to lightly push Salamander towards the door as Avian watched nervously, giving Lavender a nervous smile. "If you're worried about your girlfriend, don't be. She'll be just fine, now shoo!"
Lavender couldn't see the two dragons anymore, but she could hear Salamander give an annoyed huff of defeat before she turned to leave.
Soon enough, Parva came back into view, using her talons to fix her glasses to balance once more on her snout.
"Avian, why don't you go make sure she'll actually go get some, and actually being back the flights worth." Parva grumbled as she walked over to the table by the window with scrolls and rolled up herbs.
"S-Sure, we won't be to long!" Avian nodded before quickly scurrying off to do as he was told.
Once Avian was out of earshot, Parva grumbled to herself. "He'll probably stop to look at every colourful flower he sees on the way there and back," she flicked her tail. That's when Lavender noticed that the old SandWing's stinger was gone. It looked to have been torn off. "Should keep em busy long enough."
Lavender watched as Parva turned around with a rolled up piece of what looked to be lavender. The old SandWing walked over to Lavender's bed as sat down in front of her.
"Lavender, I want you to follow the lavender with you're eyes, okay? And while we're at it, how about you blink for me."
Lavender blinked once at the SandWing.
"Good." She nodded as she held up the lavender. "One blink for yes, two for no, how about that?"
As Lavender's pink eyes followed the lavender within Parva's talons, she blinked once.
Parva held the lavender up higher and Lavender's gaze followed. When she held it to the left, she followed until she couldn't see it anymore.
"Hmmm." Parva pulled the lavender back into Lavender's line of sight once more. "You cannot move aside from your eyes. If we're lucky, you could possibly gain more movability over time."
I hope so, Lavender thought.
-~-~-~-~-~-
As the days passed on, Lavender did slowly begin to gain back more movability, surely but slowly. After she gained back her ability to move her eyes and blink, a week later she could twitch her ears. Two weeks after that she could clench her talons. A few days later, she could move her jaw. She got better with each passing day, but one thing that she never could do was move her wings. They still were lifeless at her sides.
So far, the thing that took the longest for her to move was her lower half. She couldn't move that for about two months after she first opened her eyes. And today was the day she'd be trying to walk for the first time.
"You'll do great." Salamander said encouragingly to Lavender as she was slowly helping the smaller purple hybrid out of her bed.
Salamander had told her everything that had happened after Animosity slammed her into the rocks. Apparently Salamander had rushed her to the closest healer she could find, but they thought it would be useless to try and save her, so she flew Lavender's seemingly lifeless body to Parva's hut near the edge of the Sky Kingdom in a small village that was between the Sky Kingdom, Sand Kingdom and Mud Kingdom. Apparently Lavender had been out and unresponsive for three months, but she could hear everything.
"I won't let you fall, I promise." Salamander smiled.
"I know you won't, or else you'll never hear the end of it from me." Lavender smiled as she felt her talons touch the wooden floor. Her legs wobbled and she felt as though she were about to fall over, but Salamander quickly used her wings to keep Lavender close and leaned up against her body for support.
"I've gone for over three months without hearing you're voice, I'm sure I'd love to never hear the end of it."
"Very funny." Lavender smirked as she slowly started to step forwards with wobbly legs, her tail flicking and waving wildly behind her as it tired to get used to being used for balance once more. Salamander slowly walked along side her and soon they fell into a steady rhythm. They'd both match their slow strides as they made their way slowly around the room, slowly Lavender started to pick up her pace in excitement.
"Slow down there, you don't wanna fall!"
Lavender looked up as she heard the chuckle. Her eyes met the icy blue ones with speckles of gold. It was Avian. The pink SkyWing was standing in the doorway, the pouch that hung across his neck and rested against his chest looked bloated and stuffed with plants sticking out off it from any holes they could find.
After Lavender was able to speak again, one of her first questions she asked Avian was how he was pink, since she'd never seen a pink SkyWing before.
"Oh! That's because I'm fireless." He smiled.
"Fireless?" She questioned, her voice sounding scratchy from being unused for a long time.
"Mhm," the pale SkyWing nodded. "I was born with a twin, and while we were growing, he got to much fire when I got to little. I can't breath fire, so I get cold. That's why I wear this fur! It helps to keep me warm during the day." He said as he used one talon to tap at the fur around his neck.
"Where's your brother?" She couldn't help but asking. She regretted that after she saw the way he wilted slightly, his smile wavering for a few seconds.
"Well..." his wings twitched nervously. "I can't remember it all to well, but when Queen Amber found out about me and my brother, she came after me and my family, forcing us to go into hiding."
"Oh."
"My mother was caught first. I don't know what happened to her, but my father said she had been killed since she wouldn't give our location away to the Queen. When I was one, that's when they found us. My father tried to protect us both, but my brother was killed and my father then chose to flee and take me with him."
"You don't need to tell me the whole story!" Lavender quickly tried to cut in. "I don't want to resurface any bad feelings from those memories."
"No, it's alright!" He gave her a reassuring smile. "If you want, I can't stop."
"No, I'd...like to keep hearing your story."
He nodded as he continued. "He fled to the edges of the Sky Kingdom, but he couldn't get away. So he quickly found a small burrow to hide me in and flew away so they wouldn't find me. I don't know what happened to him, but that's when I was found by Parva."
"So she took you in?" She tilted her head when he let out a laugh.
"Oh three moons no! Not at first anyway. She took me to the local orphanage and I stayed there up until I was three. Surprisingly, she came back and practically demanded to take me. And that's how I ended up here!"
"I wouldn't say demanded." Parva grumbled as she walked within the room, hearing their conversation.
"What ever you say Parva va!"
"Don't call me that."
Lavender shook the memory away with a smile as she looked at Avian.
"Look! I'm walking!" She squealed with excitement. She tried walked a bit to fast and tripped over her talons, falling onto the wooden floor with a thud.
"And now you're laying down." Salamander chuckled.
"Oh shush!" Lavender batted with her talons in Salamander's direction before she tried to stand back up on her own.
-~-~-~-~-~-
As the days past on, Lavender kept getting better and better. She could now walk on her own and she could trot, but she couldn't run fully. She could do a slow run, but that was it so far. By now, she no longer really needed to be looked after by Avian, Salamander and Parva, so, with Parva's permission, she was able to leave their hut.
"Make sure to pay a visit once every week for a check up! Alright Lavender?" Again asked with a smile.
"Yup, you've got it." She gave him a smile. "I know you'll both miss me."
"I'll miss you so much."
"Hardly." Parva grumbled, though it wasn't filled with annoyance. Lavender had figured out that Parva had her own way of showing defection, with a little bit of Avian's assistance.
"Bye you guys!" She waved with one of her talons, since she still couldn't use her wings. Which, her wings were wrapped in bandages, keeping them in a comfortable position while Hey were held close to her sides and keeping them from dragging on the floor. Parva had told her that there's a high chance she may never fly again, and it did sadden Lavender, but she'll learn to live with it. She'd have to, unless they some how magically healed and functioned properly once more.
"Let's get going princess." Salamander smiled as she took the lead in walking towards the small village not to far away from Parva and Avian's healers hut.
Lavender and Salamander were going to start a life here, unless she wanted to try and make the long journey back home through the mountains to the rainforest. But back to the main topic! Salamander and Lavender were going to see if they could buy a hut together, and Lavender was going to see if she could get a job along with Salamander, with a bunch of convincing and helpful shoving.
"What kind of job are you hoping to find?" Lavender asked as they walked.
"Eh, I've got no clue." Salamander sighed with a flick of her tails.
"Well, Let's think about what you like!"
"You."
"Haha very funny," Lavender smiled as she looked back over at Salamander. They still weren't sure what to call themselves. If they were together or not, but, they'd work it out. They've been through so much as far worse than this, so they'll have no problem. "How about a musician?"
"A what?"
"A musician! You love to sing and dance, what if you make music for the village?"
Salamander looked to think for a few moments before she gave a smile.
"Y'know, hat doesn't sound that bad."
"I know, that's because I thought of it."
"Yeah yeah."
-~-~-~-~-~-
Two years later...
"Come on, we don't wanna be late!" Lavender smile as she quickened her pace through the village.
"Slow down Mrs. Lavender!"
"Then hurry up!" She laughed as she looked over her shoulder at the small dragonet who followed behind her.
The small dragonet was a small SandWing dragonet with pale sandy yellow scales, getting darker the closer they got to his frill. Speckles covered his snout as though someone had taken a paint brush and splattered them across his face. His eyes were black just like any other SandWing and they looked to sparkle like stars that twinkle within the night sky.
This little dragonets name was Python, and he was an orphanage who lived at he orphanage she worked at in town. The little dragonet would often be found following her around, and he would grow worried or scared whenever she wasn't around. She was told that it was because of his separation issues, but she just liked to think it was because he liked her best out of all the orphanage workers.
The pair of them continued to make their way through town until they arrived to the centre square where a small group of dragons were gathered to watch and listen to the band that was going to play in their daily spot.
Her eyes searched for a certain dragon as she made her way to the front, where she sat down. Python was quick to take his place next to her, his black eyes wide in awe and excitement.
Lavender's pink eyes soon locked with warm emerald green ones that belonged to her girlfriend.
Salamander.
The two of them had managed to afford their own hut in the village and had been living here for the last year. Lavender's family would come to visit once every month. Sapphire would often visit three times every two months, or when ever she'd have the time to. Sometimes Meerkat and Scorpion would visit when ever they got the chance.
Lavender felt happy here, she felt as though she were home.
She pulled herself out of her thoughts as music and singing started to fill her ears, a smile making its way onto her face. She felt Python lean against her side as he listened to the music, leaning against one of her bandaged wings. She never got the ability to fly again, she might never get it back, but she didn't need to go anywhere. Everything she loved was here.
She wasn't torn between sides.
