Chapter 19
"This has to work." Lavender told herself as she flew through the Rainforest, flying past flicks of parrots or groups of toucans. Sometimes she'd pass a group of howler monkeys that make their presence well known, almost as though they wanted to be eaten by wandering dragons. She'd tuck in her wings to dodge vines or just to fit through smaller spaced trees or branches.
"Three moons Lavender! Slow down!" Salamander hissed from behind.
The two of them had been flying for a few hours, heading towards the centre of the Rainforest Kingdom to where Queen Dandelion and King Palmtree's large hut tree was located. The royal family had the whole tree to themselves with huts and hammocks that hung from each branch. Lavender had even heard the tree itself was hallow and used as a palace. It was one of the larger trees in the Rainforest, meaning it's trunk was thicker along with its branches, it also was taller, so the base of its canopy brushed the tops of the other trees that grew around it.
"Three moons Salamander! Speed up!" She called back as she stuck out her tongue, earning a playful glare from the other hybrid.
"You're so childish." The other hybrid commented once she caught up to Lavender, the two now flying side by side, well, as much as they could in the Rainforest canopy that seemed to be woven like a spiders web in vines and branches.
"Then I guess I fit the part." Lavender shot back. If Salamander kept insisting she looked like a dragonet, why not play the part? Besides, I'd be funny to see how long it takes until she gets annoyed, she thought with a smirk.
"Why are you smirking?" Salamander deadpanned.
"No reason." She smiled innocently.
Salamander looked at her with narrowed eyes for a few moments, letting out a hum of thought.
"Yeah you're up to something." The other hybrid stated plainly, earning an offended noise from Lavender.
"I am certainly not! How dare you assume such a thing! Me?! Really!?" Lavender gasped, acting as though she were really offended by Salamander's words.
"Okay now I definitely know you're up to something."
"I would never!"
"I wouldn't lie Lavender, it's not a good look on you." Salamander smirked.
"Oh and it's a good look on you?" She questioned, earning a chuckle from the other hybrid who had now ended up flying behind the smaller purple hybrid.
"I dunno, what do you think?"
"I'm not going to answer that."
"Oh come on," Salamander laughed as she tucked in her wings to fly through some vines with a twirl, as though she were trying to show off to Lavender. The smaller hybrid watched her, trying to keep the most unimpressed face she could muster, but she couldn't help but roll her eyes, the bridge of her snout turning pink slightly, the scales shifting colour lightly. "Tell me. I bet I look gorgeous no matter what I do."
She's not wrong, she thought, but after a few seconds she realized what she just though and she started grumbling to herself with a huff.
"Stop doing that!"
"Doing what?" Salamander asked innocently, her smirk broadening, ad though she enjoyed seeing Lavender like this.
"That!" She jabbed a talon in Lavender's direction, no longer looking where she was flying.
"You just pointed to all of me princess."
"Stop giving me that cute fa-" Lavender was cut off as she was tugged back. Salamander looked to shoot past her since she now was no longer flying. Lavender let out a gasp of air, air that felt as though it'd been forced from her lungs. She let out a groan when she tried to move, she was wrapped in vines that felt as though they clung to her body. She struggled, trying to get herself out, but it only seemed to make it worse.
"Oh isn't this wonderful!" Lavender roared.
She stopped struggling when she heard laughter, when she looked, she saw that Salamander had flown back over to her. She looked as though she were trying hide her laughter, but it wasn't working on the slightest.
"Stop laughing!"
"I thought you knew the rainforest like the back of your claws and never got stuck?" Salamander's laugh had now turned to a wheeze as the larger hybrid held her middle as though it hurt.
"Stop laughing you over grown lizard!" That didn't seem to help one bit as Salamander wheezed harder, her wings flapping unevenly for a moment.
Lavender kept struggling but soon she let herself go limp with an annoyed huff. Out of all the times she's gotten stuck within vines, why did I it have to be now? When Salamander was watching too.
It doesn't look like she'll be helping me any time soon, she thought with a frown as she used her talons to slowly cut away at the vines that held her hostage while Salamander's laughing and adorable wheezing filled the air around her.
It felt as though it took forever before she freed herself, and now they were flying once more, on their way to Queen Dandelion and King Palmtree's tree, or, palace, what ever it was called. As they flew, Salamander kept trying to get Lavender's attention, but she was just stubbornly ignoring her at this point.
"Oh come on, you can't be that mad." Salamander wheezed as they flew.
"Lavy~" Salamander cooed, a smirk still on her face as Lavender still continued to ignore her, though it felt as though it was getting harder to do with each passing second.
"Come on," Salamander flew closer to Lavender. "I know you can't ignore me forever."
"Watch me."
"HA!" Salamander shouted with a laugh.
"NO! THAT DOESN'T COUNT! I'M STILL IGNORING YOU!"
Lavender's shout was fallen upon deaf ears as Salamander continued to laugh, which soon turned into a wheeze.
"STOP LAUGHING!" Lavender couldn't stop herself from laughing as well. Salamander's laugh and her wheeze felt contagious as Lavender's laughter bubbles inside of her chest.
The two dragons laughter filled the air around them, deafening the sounds of squawking parrots or screeching monkeys. But soon, their laughter started to die down into small and light hearted giggles.
"You know, you should laugh more often."
"Huh?" Lavender's frills twitched as she looked over at Salamander who was softly smiling at her.
"You should laugh more often you deaf bat." Salamander's tone held no venom, just light hearted teasing as her smile never left her face. "It's a good look on you."
Lavender couldn't form any words, she just stumbled over random letters and felt as though her tongue was a flopping fish with no purpose. So, instead she puffed her cheeks and looked forwards, trying to pretend she didn't hear what Salamander said.
Soon, the two of them were flying trough a village with huts built within the trees. It was a RainWing village. The colourful dragons could be seen everywhere. Some talking with one another, dragonets running around, some walking with baskets of colourful fruit or flowers. One thing that couldn't be seen though, was any NightWing's.
No NightWing's lived within the centre of the Rainforest because they'd always be excluded from any activities or news that would go around. That's why most, if not all, off them lived along the edges of the Rainforest, as far as they could from the RainWing's, but mostly, Queen Dandelion. Even though the Queen was one fourth NightWing, she acted as though she were fully RainWing. She acted as though NightWing's were the worst dragons in all of Pyrrha, but deep down, she must care for them.
Lavender needed her to care because if she didn't, Animosity would take her claim as Queen of the NightWing's and then who knows what could happen.
She has to care for them, she's their Queen! She thought as she and Salamander kept flying. They'd get an odd glance here and there from a few dragons, even some curious looks from dragons who watched them with awe filled eyes that seemed to glitter like jewels. When Lavender focused away from any eyes watching her, she couldn't help but gasp in awe at the sight before her.
Up ahead was a tree larger than the rest with ride branches that seemed to stretch out like dragon wings. The leaf's seemed to glow brightly as rays of sunlight filtered through the foliage, casting warm yellow light down upon the village. Small flicks of birds and butterfly's were flying around and seemed to make the place all the more colourful with the clusters of fruit hanging from some of the trees and flowers blooming along some branches, vines and along the rainforest floor.
This place is beautiful, she thought in awe, her mouth slightly agape.
"Wow." She heard Salamander whisper under her breath as they both took in the sight before them. "This is the strangest palace I've ever seen."
"Well, it's not really a palace, it's just a tree that's been hollowed out and turned into where the royal family lives." Lavender said with a shrug of her shoulders as they flew towards the large tree that seemed to have RainWing's flying around it like flocks of birds.
"So, a palace."
Lavender gave Salamander a look and the other hybrid gave her a smug grin in return, one that seemed to say "I'm right, by you just don't wanna admit it."
She only rolled her eyes in response as they flew closer to the tree, or, er, palace. What ever it was called. It wasn't really a palace and wasn't really just a tree either. So sure, it was a palace. The two of them flew over to one of the many built ledges wth a wooden bridge that lead into the main section of the palace. Ahead of them was a line of RainWing's who looked to be patiently waiting, or, at least some of them looked to be patiently waiting while some looked annoyed and were grumbling to themselves. At the beginning of the line by the entrance to the palace, there was a RainWing who was just sitting there. They were the one who told dragons when to go inside, which, sounded like a boring job if you asked Lavender.
"Uhhh, what is this?" Salamander asked Lavender, a confused look in her emerald green eyes.
"A line." She replied flatly.
"No, I mean, why is there a line?"
"There a like so the royal family isn't swarmed with problems or concerns, like every royal family. So, we've got to wait out turn, begrudgingly." She grumbled the last part. Their reason to be here was important! And I hate waiting in line, she added to herself. "So, we have to wait."
-~-~-~-~-~-
WHY IS THIS TAKING SO LONG?!
They'd been standing in line for what felt like hours and the sun would be starting to set soon. They were close to the beginning of the line, with two RainWing's ahead of them who looked rather bored. While Lavender felt antsy as though a swarm of ants were crawling across her body as though she were their nest. That thought made her shiver with a quiver of her wings and her frills.
"Next." The RainWing seated by the door grunted, he sounded awfully bored and tired.
The RainWing at the front of the line let out a grumble which sounded like a "finally" before she made her way inside with an another flick of her long tail.
"How much longer is this going to take." Lavender grumbled as she stood by Salamander.
"There's only one more dragon left, once they're done, we'll be able to talk with the Queen." Salamander reassured her with a smile as she wrapped a wing over Lavender's shoulders.
"But knowing that, it'll take even longer." She groaned in annoyance, earning a chuckle from the older hybrid beside her.
A few more moments pasted before the older RainWing called out again. "Next!"
The RainWing ahead of them huffed as he went inside. They would be next! Finally!
Lavender no longer felt bored as she ran through what would happen in her head. Queen Dandelion and King Palmtree will be scared of what could happen to the other half of their tribe, so they'll come and help to save the NightWing's from Animosity and Charming! She could feel the smile forming on her face. This was going to work! It has to!
They only had to wait a few more moments before the older RainWing told them "next" and let them pass by into the palace. Lavender could hear the light tapping of her talons, along with Salamander's, as they walked. The walls were made of wood that seemed to swirl into shape as though it'd grown that way. Paintings were hung on each wall and seemed to pop with colour. Not many RainWing's painted here in the rainforest, so some of them must've been bought from painters from other tribes.
It didn't take them long to each the throne room that was circular in shape with large windows that let warm yellow rays of sunlight make the room glow in a golden colour, making the wood seem brighter in coloration. Moss grew along some of the walls, looking like patches of green shades of fur. In front of them were two thrones made of wood with jewels embedded into them to make them sparkle in some places. Seated in the throne on the left of the pair was Queen Dandelion's throne, the Queen held her head high, her crown atop her head. Her crown looked to be made of flowers and fines with jewels wedged in between them.
Seated beside the Queen was her husband, King Palmtree. The green shaded RainWing looked rather bored where he sat and kept looking at his talons while his head rested in his other set of talons that were propped up on his throne.
"A pair of hybrids? That's new." The Queen commented from where she sat with a twitch of her wings. She let out a sigh as she looked at the two of them. "Well, speak up. I don't have all day."
"Your majesty, we're here to inform you of a certain pair of dragons who are a threat to the tribe." Lavender started, trying to make herself sound formal.
That looked to catch both of the other dragons attention as they looked at Lavender and Salamander questioning and curious gazes.
"A threat to the tribe?" King Palmtree questioned with a twitch of his frills.
"A NightWing names Animosity and a Tribrid named Charming." Salamander informed flatly.
"And how are they a threat? NightWing's hardly do anything." Queen Dandelion huffed.
"They're planning on taking over the NightWing's, Animosity plans to make herself Queen and it seems as though she's already convinced a few other NightWing's that she's the right one to rule over them."
"She wants to rule the NightWing's?" The Queen looked eyes with Lavender, her yellow eyes narrowing slightly at the young hybrid, who just nodded her head.
There was a moment of silence that seemed to stretch on for a century before one of them spoke up, breaking the silence. What was said seemed to make Lavender's plan shatter before her.
"Well, she can have them." Queen Dandelion huffed.
————————————————————
I was rather bored today, so I made this chapter even though I should be taking a small break from writing since I felt burnt out in the last one. But anyways, thank you guys for reading this chapter! I feel as though the chapters will start to get back to their normal length soon.
Also, I want to thank you guys so much for reading Torn Sides! This book has reached 500 reads and it feels like a large milestone for me! It does seem like this book has been moving rather slowly compared to The Scorching, but, I'm just so happy that it's reached 500 reads!
Speaking of reads, The Scorching is getting closer to 4K reads which seemed ridiculous! It seems like only yesterday when I posted the Prologue for that book. I want to thank you all for the support, it means a lot to me!
