Part one:
My sister was born with too much fire, and I was born with barely any. How? Some dragons say she stole my fire, others say my sister was blessed and I was cursed. Well, I definitely feel cursed. My mother isn't proud of me. She harasses me because of my disability. She wishes I could just learn to breathe fire. Little does she know it isn't easy trying to. she says stuff like, "I can't deal with you right now." And, "you're so annoying. You should be more like your sister." I don't blame her. My sister is like a gold mine. Anything she touches burns and catches fire. My mom and me have found a way to let her touch us by rubbing a type of limestone on our bodies, but no one else can touch Peril. my mom brings Peril along when she is hunting, and leaves me home. Our cave is deep underground. You have to fly up a big tunnel into yet another cave, than close up the tunnel with something and walk out of the cave. Little do they both know that I secretly leave the house to go hunt all by myself. I'm a pretty good hunter. I can claw out the insides of any animal in less than a minute. In fact, in my room, I have a secret cubby where I put all of the meat I hunt. I rarely eat dinner with my family because the food is always burnt, and I can't handle it. I tell my mom it must be because of my disability if she ever asks why I never eat much food. The truth is, I have a huge appetite. I can scarf down all of the cows I hunted in a matter of seconds. I have no regret that I keep this secret from my family. My mom would probably yell at me and keep the food to herself, anyways. My disability has taught me to be grateful that I am still alive. My sister could've take all of my fire, or the curse could've decided to take all of my fire away. I am more than lucky to have a life so sweet. I even have a friend named Celeste. She was adopted by a skywing so she lives next door to our underground cave. Since my mom doesn't want me going outside to get into Celeste's cave, she made Celeste a stream connecting our houses together, so she can swim in anytime she wants. Peril and Celeste hate each other. Water and fire to not mix. Celeste is usually the one to start the fights. She says stuff like, "gee, it smells like burning in here...what a terrible smell!" Once she even said, "oh, hi, Peril! I think god meant to bless Apex but you shoved in front because your so demanding." That pushed Peril off the edge. Celeste came home with a bloody and bruised eye that afternoon. "I have no regrets. That look on her face was so worth it." Celeste said the next day. Celeste actually became blind in that eye. Peril had set fire to it, so Celeste's eye would sometimes flake burnt pieces onto the ground. "Gee, Apex. What's wrong? You're so quiet." Celeste asked, shoving me to the left. "Just thinking." I mumble. Celeste scoffs. "Really? You won't tell me anything?" I look at the stone floor, then at Celeste. Celeste looked elegant swimming in the sky blue water that was reflecting onto the cave ceiling. All was silent, except for the tiny splashes Celeste makes every once in a while. I get off the log I'm sitting on and sit next to Celeste on the wet stone. "Celeste, do you think I am cursed?" I ask her. She stares at me like she is thinking hard. "Not really. I think god made you different for a reason." She smiles. I smile back. I guess she is right. Peril says she just thinks I have fire deep inside me and if I try hard I can let it shine. That answer didn't help, because now Kestrel wants me to find my inner fire. She thinks I am hiding it and gets mad if I say I can't breathe fire. Celeste splashes me and I come back to the present. I giggle and dip my feet in the water. Celeste inhales deeply. "is this about the thing I told Peril? I don't think you are cursed, I just wanted to make fun of her." She laughs. I shake my head. "No, it isn't that. I just think I'm so behind compared to other dragonets." I sigh. Celeste pulls on my leg and I come crashing into the water. She dunks my head in and out of the water, laughing playfully. She finally pulls my head out of the water and stares at my face, which is dripping water. We both pause, staring at each other for a while. "You look glossy with water on your face." Celeste mumbles quietly. "You too." I respond. We both snap back to life in a matter of seconds. "...The reason I dunked you is because you are not behind. You can hunt better than anyone I know, and your fighting...just perfect." I grin. It is true. I fight and practice hard every day to make my mom proud, but she still thinks I am a disappointment. I feel Peril tap on my back and I shriek. Celeste hisses and ducks underwater. "Mom wants you to gut the fish for lunch." Peril grumbles. I nod and wave goodbye to Celeste, who was now making huge bubbles and giggling underwater. Celeste finally cake up from the surface and grinned at Peril. "That is such an important job Apex has. Too bad Kestrel didn't pick you to do it." Peril hissed and Celeste followed the river out of the cave, chuckling loudly as she left. "Sorry," I said to Peril when Celeste was gone. "Sometimes she can be a jerk." Peril laughed. "You think?" We walk to Kestrel together, chatting about if we ruled the sky kingdom or if Peril and I were born normal. Kestrel was sitting on a log at her table, laying big and small fish out and examining them. When she saw me she smiled. "Oh, thank goodness you're here." My mom had mixed emotions about me. Sometimes she hates me, sometimes she couldn't live without me. I started sharpening my claws on the wall while Kestrel laid out the fish. Peril kept on talking to me, like she wanted me to stay occupied. Suddenly a shocking sound made me jump. "Hellooo? Hello? Anyone in this secret cave?"
