Chapter 4: The long flight

"Psst, Tide." A familiar voice broke the silent dark. "Wake up, buddy." He shot open his eyes, feeling the poke of a talon at his side. "What are you doing sleeping (Not to mention right next to a MudWing) right now? Don't forget about the competition." He looked and saw the familiar shape of Drought, standing over him. "You can catch up pretty quickly of you get moving now.

"What?" He stopped. "Oh, the competition!" He bolted upright, almost knocking Drought over with surprise. The sun was barely rising when he noticed they slept more than an hour. He looked over the MudWing to see Coast, Seabass, and the MudWing all safe and sound. He had almost forgoten about how they had joined him when they saw him fly down to the river. He saw Coasts' ear flick at the sound of his voice. Then she rose her neck to see what was happening. "Competition?" She said drowsingly. "OH!" She did this yell in purpose so everyone woke up. Seabass jumped up with a fright. "Yikes! Don't do that!" He scolded. When he did this, a small squeak was heard over their voices. Coast turned and so did Tide. They stared at the same spot for only a second before a yellow shift of scales pierced the lightly light floor. Then they turned green with a shake and Tide recalled seeing that same color behind Coast during the fight in the blob of dragons. "What is that?" He questioned.

"Oh, this little guy?" She pointed her snout towards the purple eyed RainWing. "This is Thorntur. Thorn for short."

"Hi." His happy but slightly quiet voice sounded soft and appreciating. "Nice to meet you." He smiled nervously, showing a few teeth visible to them. Drought interrupted, saying "guys, we need to head out. Now, or well never catch up." "Oh Tat's right, the competition." Seabass answered. "Yes, yah, quickly." He ushered them up and told them to catch some fish in the small river. Luckily they had a few SeaWings to launch piles of small fish onto the floor with a splash of their tails. Immediately the MudWing woke up as Drought burned up his share. She sat eagerly for her amount. When she got it, she delightfuly snacked upon her little fish. After they had all eaten, they had attempted to pair each other up for safety. "So, uhh..." Tide spoke. "Coast with Thorn. Uh, Seabass with uh, Drought, and I guess me with..." he remembered he never got the MudWings' name. She gestured to the cliff and then the water. Tide understood immediately, "Cliffwater? Interesting name." He blinked as she nodded happily. "Me and Cliffwater I guess." So they each got with their partner and took to the sky.

After what seemed like an hour, Tide noticed something on the floor, gleaming red. "Guys...?" He spoke loudly so they could hear him over the wind. He flew down and they followed like birds, which kind of made Tide smile, since they weren't. When he got to the floor, a few feet away, he frowned. It was a body. The body of a Dragon. As he got closer the rest landed behind him. The body was gleaming a pale yellow, like a desert. A SandWing of course. His death, telling by the verticle slice on his throat, was quick and painless. Tides' wings drooped at the sight of the corpse. He was probably captured too, had a family, friends, and other loved ones that were afraid of where he was. Them probably thinking he was lost and alone made Tide even more sad, because he was neither, he was dead.

"Oh goodness." Coast said as she turned and folded her wing over Thorns eyes, blocking his view. "Aw geez!" Seabass gagged before he walked backwards away from it. Tide just stared at it. "What is it? What's going on?" Thorn squeaked, trying to see. Cliffwater walked up to it and Tide noticed her reaction was not sadness nor' disgust. It was curiosity. She leaned in, pokeing the talons with her snout and watching it fall back to its' place when she moved it away. She moved over to his poisonous tail and pushed it away before circling around it to its' head. She lifted it with her snout once or twice before sadness came across her face. Had she just now found out it was dead? Tide wondered. The others looked at her in shock, not knowing if she was curious or crazy.

"Let's...keep moving." Coast hesitated when Cliffwater walked past her, with no expression before spreading her wings. Seabass did the same and they flew up with Thorn following after saying "come when you're ready." Drought walked up to the body unhappily, taking no second glances at it before flying up after them. "Let's go..." Tide said. Cliffwater looked up just as he flew off. He turned and hovered a bit for her to catch up. With one last look at the body, and a blissful wing motion over it, she was passing Tide slowly. He hoped she would be OK after this.

They've been flying for two hours over empty land with trees, grass, and flowers before they heard voices in the distance. "Guys, maybe it's Heat what's his name!?" Thorn flapped quickly ahead in front of them. They passed through clouds before Tide saw who the voices belonged to. Since he was behind with Cliffwater, they were the last to see what was beyond.

Cliffwater had grabbed his tail and pulled back just in time to dodge a SkyWing being chased by a SandWing. He gave her a thankful nod before zooming to catch up with Coast, she had Thorn in her talons and was hovering with Seabass, Drought overhead. "What's going on?" Tide asked Coast. "Apperantly they found the first pond. But all at once." She said unhappily. "Let's try to get some water." Seabass said, before he flew down hesitantly. The others followed very cautiously. Soon enough they were at the pond, it was beautiful, filled with big fish and fresh water. Immediately the three SeaWings jumped into the after with a huge dive. Tide felt the dryness if his scales go away as he drifted through the water. He caught a big fish and went up to the surface, he turned and saw Cliffwater examining the sky. The dragons were battling far above them, so they took no notice. He swam up to her and dropped the fish flat in her talons, she looked down in surprise. He gave a big toothy grin before going back underwater and cmng up again. She gobbled the fish up with a thankful gulp, and drak water. Thorn came up beside her and Drought did as well. "Be quick, they could see you at any moment." Tide nodded, and noticed the others in the water were there. "Got it." Coast said, grateful. "Kay." Seabass replied.
