Chapter 2: Drought
Tide heard wings flapping as he opened his eyes. His pupils were greeted by a bright light. "WHA-!?" He flung himself backwards in surprise. "Woah, there, Buddy. You're gonna make more damage than there already is."
"More...damage?" Tide stared.
"Yup, you betchya."
"What..?" He looked at the yellow and brown body. He noticed the tail had a barb at the end. "Are you a...SandWing?"
"Yup, sure am." The SandWing shook his body from head to poisonous tail. Tide marveled for a moment on how his pale, golden scales sparkled in the sunlight. Tide couldn't help but notice how large this SandWing was. He's never seen a SandWing at all, though. He only got to see them in scrolls and story books from the Sea Kingdom, they seemed to be his mothers' size, quite small but bigger than the average dragon her age, but now he doubted his theory.
"Why are you here...?" Tide said, confused about what was going on.
"Why am I here? Why am I here!? Listen, I don't know what you're talking about, buddy."
"My name's not Buddy, it's Tide, okay??" Tide spoke bitterly. He turned and felt the pain on his Side come back. He just then remembered what happened.
"Well then, 'Tide', I'm Drought. Thanks for asking," Tide turned and looked away, obviously embarrassed about his poor manners. His mother never raised him to be rude. Drought continued on," why are you asking so many quest-"
"Coast! Seabass!!" Tide bolted up and looked around. He noticed that he was in a large cage, big enough for three dragons. The sides had thick but still thin bars and the bottom had three sets of hard wood over bars in the bottom. "Where am I?!" Tide wondered. "You're in the Pits', harsh place."
"The Pits'?"
"Yup, the Pits'."
"What's that?"
"Well, the Pits' is a thing made by, how do I say, 'rouge' dragons, for entertainment purposes, I may add."
"That doesn't explain anything."
"Look, Buddy.... Tide, I mean. The Pits' is a competition. Dragons' bet on other dragons to compete in many different tournaments to see who wins, it's mainly for winning jems, jewels and gold excetera excetera. They capture dragons and use than for entertainment, like I said."
"What!?" Tide was bewildered. He never heard of such stupid things ever! "Who would bet on a dragon to win!?!?" He squealed. Just then, the cage opened and a big MudWing came in, he looked at them both and signaled them to come. Drought automatically followed, just then Tide noticed the chain on his neck, did he have one too? He didn't get to check before Drought said "I guess we'll find out then. Come on." Tide followed hesitantly. The MudWing stared angrily at them both. Then led the way to a group of other dragons.
A dragon stood on a rock and was speaking to the group. "Ahh, now we have all our dragons, we can start." He explained all the same stuff Drought had, so he understood it better. During this time, he took in the scenery, he noticed there were a few trees here and there, a big mountain, and a small desert part a bit away. Then, they summoned them to a part a little away from the rock, and there were some odd looking dragons argueing. "Okay!!" The main dragon spoke. Tide just realized it was a big SandWing. "Our first option is this lovely SandWing named Rise." He shoved a SandWing up in front of him and showed them what she looked like. The crowd murmered and bids broke out. "4 Rubies!" "10 Rubies!" For those who thought she could win. Then he motioned her away and pushed out a MudWing. He wasn't big, but he wasn't very small either. "This is a tough MudWing, named Mount." And then a few bids went out. When tide turned to see a MudWing collecting the bids and writing them down, he noticed two SeaWings.
It was Coast and Seabass!! Just then, the SandWing pulled Coast forward, saying "And this gourgeous SeaWing, named Coast. Fresh from the sea." she hissed and snapped at him. She looked angrily at the bidders. Immediately bids broke out, some said things about being tough or pretty or even thoughtful-looking. Then she went, and Seabass came out. "This mighty SeaWing, named Seabass." He pushed him forward and Seabass just stared. Nobody was impressed by his cowering poster. The SandWing told him to do something, and Seabass took a deep gulp. He took a position and spread his wings out. Bidders were in awe. Tide knew Seabass had the biggest wings from their kingdom, he was quite impressed how his stance worked, it was intimidating. Bids came out and then it was Droughts' turn up.
Turns out he's done this before. When he came, the other SandWing had said, "This hardy SandWing, known for his victorious past competitions here, named Drought" after he said what he said, Drought did what he did when he met Tide. He shook from head to toe and flapped his wings in sync, and when he came down, he made this amazing roar and showed his sharp teeth and black tounge. Then he walked away, bids went out like crazy! Then someone shoved Tide up. "This," the SandWings' voice came. "Is a quick and strong SeaWing, named Tide, when he was found, he was Able to ush one of my MudWings into the water."He had no idea what to do!! He wasn't paying attention to any of what had happened really, he was really embarrassed. Then someone shuted "That's not a quick and strong SeaWing!! Fake!! Rip-off!" Then came "Lame" and then "awkward" "weak looking" and many more insults. He was backing up until someone stopped him. It was the SandWing, and he looked upset. Tide turned to Drought, who looked at him sadly and shrugged his shoulders. He turned towards the SandWing blocking his path, "what??!" He shrieked as the dragon walked closer up to him.
"What are you gonna do?!" He whined as he backed up. "We needed something impresive to get some momey, but we caught a wimp, good thing We haven't spilled blood in a long time..." he lifted his talons up and down on the rock. Tide panicked and turned. And he saw it. Right then and there, the MudWing that had called him a name first, the one that started it. There were rocks flying in the air as they boo'd him. Tide mumbled to himself, and the SandWing heard what he had said. "If this is gonna be how its gonna be," His voice got louder as he spoke until it hit a yell. "Then you're gonna have to suffer the CONSEQUENCES!!!!" He leaped right into the crowd with his wings spread out and his sharp long talons sticking out, immediately, the crowd moved, except for the one MudWing. Tide tackled him, and they rolled down and down to where Tide didn't now where they fell. He could still hear the other dragons. He realized he was towering over the MudWing. He immedietly did what he needed to do. The MudWing snarled but Tide shoved his face to the floor. He dug his talon into his snout. Blood fell, but Tide didn't care, this time. "You listen here,BUD." He pushed his face into the floor a little harder. "You better watch what you say, because next time, " he turned to see the dragons pouring over the small hill. The head SandWing in the lead, he was bigger when he flew. He looked back. "There will be no one to help you. You got it!?" The dragon nodded frightfully. He jumped off the dragon and he got up with a yelp. He held his snout with his talons. when he turned, the head SandWing was already landing next to him. He stared at the MudWing then at him. He turned to the crowd once they stopped. "I give you, the strong and quick Tide!!!! Do not under estimate this young drgonet!!!" He yelled, the crowd was excited, they made their bids, and when it got darker, they all left, being excited for tomorrow.
Drought was already there waiting for him at the cage. "Why must we be in HERE?" Tide asked. Before he stepped in, Coasts' voice called to him. He turned to see Coast run towards him. "Coast!!! Seabass!?" Seabass was right behind as quick as her. "We though you died!" She said. "Oh, yahhhh, sorry." He apologized. "Don't be, it's fine."
A MudWing came and said they needed to go back to their cages, so Coast and Seabass said goodbye, and left. Tide lied down and the cage closed. "Ugh, im exhausted...."
"Me too. That was exciting though, haha that dragons face!! You scared him alright!"Drought laughed
"Haha, yeah."
"Good improvisation, Tide."
"Yeah... Well, night." He layed down and went to sleep.
"Night... Drought...." Tide answered back, and he slowly drifted off to sleep.
