Prologue

After Darkstalker killed his father the Nightwing tribe went into hiding, far away on an island off the coast of the mainland that no one knew about but them. For decades they were fearful of what he'd do if – and when – he returned and were constantly suspicious of his sister Whiteout. But after many years they began to become complacent even as the tribe slowly lost their powers. They forgot that Whiteout carried the gift - or curse - of her animus father in her blood, and when she had dragonets with her soulmate Thoughtful, they were accepted by the others in the tribe with only a small amount of conflict. These dragonets were not born with the curse of magic, and were not born under the moons – none were. The entire tribe would have forgotten the powers they once had if, on his deathbed, Thoughtful had not told his oldest daughter the secret of the moons. As the centuries passed occasionally there would be a dragon with powers. Even less frequently there was an animus, the most recent being a dragon named Stonemover. But fortunately there were never all three powers present at once.

For the first time in two thousand years the three moons were full and bright. For the first time in centuries, they were visible from the volcano mountain. And an egg was beginning to hatch. .

Two Dragons stood on the highest spire of the ruined castle, nervously looking around themselves. They were deep blue-black, with scales like so many stars sprinkled across the undersides of their wings. The female gently placed a dark egg on the stone before her, positioning it carefully away from the edge. Her name was Worldfinder. She looked over at her husband Thoughtseer and smiled hopefully. This was their first egg, and with three moons shining brightly overhead, the dragonet inside would be very powerful indeed. He nodded happily, and the silver scales at the corner of each of his eyes sparkled in the moonlight.

Like her, he had been born under the moon, and had been forced to keep his powers secret from the rest of the world. She shuddered to think that if the tribe had found out, neither of them would be alive today. Both their families had kept the secret of the moons hidden. As far as she knew, they were the only ones who still remembered.

Twins, she realized, the thought coming unbidden from some motherly corner of her mind. Thoughtseer nodded again and grinned at her. He was a mind reader, but that never bothered her. It made everything a lot easier, in a way. Sometimes she wished that she'd been born with that gift, instead of the foresight, a power that was intermittent at best. Both dragons had been born under a single moon, but their dragonets . . .

The world tilted suddenly and the moons seemed to loom before her eyes before vanishing as a vision swam into focus before her eyes. A bleak and barren landscape was in front of her, black for a few moments before being covered with lava. It rushed forwards, an unstoppable wave of destruction, and black dragons ran to a small cave on a black sand beach. Time rushed forward and she saw two black dragons fighting on the same beach, fighting because of the powers they both had. One was larger and strangely marked, with ice blue horns and white scalloping the edges of each scale. The other was smaller and fierce. Both had the silver teardrop scales of mind readers. The world turned her away, showing her the return of a land that didn't belong, and the end of a mountain she didn't know.

Worldfinder turned to her husband and smiled sadly. He'd seen the vision in her mind, and knew what she felt it implied. "They can't both live."

"Yes they can. We don't know it was them."

"Who else-" She was silenced as a loud crack shook the air around them. The egg had begun to hatch. They both turned and looked at it, and Thoughtseer recoiled in shock. The egg had turned silver - just like the stories said, but was shot through with bolts of black and purple. It rocked back and forth as if a war were going on inside, each time dancing closer and closer to the cliff edge. He darted forwards to catch it, but Worldfinder stuck out her tail and stopped him. "She'll make it. Don't interfere."

He stepped back and looked inquisitively at his wife, his heart racing as he fought against the paternal urge to save his egg, "She?"

"They both will," Worldfinder said. It was with relief that she realized that only one would hatch while the moons were visible. They can live. She smiled with relief and leaned against her husband, a warm bulwark against the terrors of the future.

"Then only one will be born on the brightest night?" He asked.

"That's what the prophecy says, isn't it?" They threw back their heads and laughed at the stars.

As if awoken by the sound the first dragonet crawled out of the egg. Moonlight shone on her scales, clearly illuminating the white horns and scalloped scales - proof that an Icewing had been in her family long ago - before vanishing behind the thick clouds of ash. Her brother climbed out a few seconds later as the silver faded from the egg and it returned to a shiny black. A single white scale rested in the center of his forehead, and the powers he almost had faded with the moonlight.

Their parents looked at them in silence for a few moments. Perfect, absolutely perfect, Worldfinder thought. Then she remembered the vision she'd had and knew that the larger dragonet had been her daughter. Thoughtseer frowned slightly as he recalled her vision, then declared, "His name will be Shadowlight and she . . ." He turned to his wife, knowing she wanted to name the female.

"Her name will be Doomsayer."
