Chapter One
Nocturnal woke up calmly. The sun was just rising today, and it covered all of Jade Mountain in a warm orange light. It reflected off his smooth lustrous black and teal colored scales, and golden and yellow irises.
He took the time to look down from the cliff he was laying on, onto the world below him that was just beginning to wake up. The cliff was his favorite place to sleep, no matter how much rain, wind, or sunlight there was. He knew he would never fall off either. He was a heavy sleeper, but still kept one eye open while asleep just in case. The best part of this specific spot was that at night, he could see all the stars, which usually formed swirling patterns.
Even if he didn't want to sleep in that particular spot, he could always move to the large cave behind him, which went right into the mountain, effectively shielding anyone from harsh weather.
What he really loved the most though, was that it was his place. No one else knew about it, which he loved, because then when things got to exciting, or loud, or annoying, he knew he could always come here. Sometimes in the middle of the day he came here to just get away from life.
Not that he didn't like action and having friends. He loved when something new happened, but he hated when something bad started, especially if he was the one who started it. He was definitely a good guy, and everyone at Jade Mountain Academy new it to. He had vowed on the day that he had appeared there, that he would protect that place, along with everyone at it, with every bone, muscle, fire breath, and drop of venom in him.
As he stood up, blinked and rubbed his eyes to get the sleep out of them, and shook out his silver star-like scaled wings, he smiled at how nice the day already seemed.
That was the thing though. He would protect anyone good in Jade Mountain, because of how nicely they treated him, and how they had raised him in such a peaceful world, regardless of his mysterious origins, and strange looks. He had the midnight black scales (with a hint of dark blue), silver under scales under his wings, spines, and fire breath of a Nightwing. He even had silver teardrop scales behind his eyes, and could even search through the minds of another dragons thoughts and history, and could see a few seconds into the future. At the same time, there were also some teal scales on him as well. These changed color with his mood sometimes, but he usually kept his "colorful" personality to himself. Along with that, he also had a prehencile tail, the ruffs behind his ears, and the venom spitting fangs of a Rainwing. Even with his obvious descendents, he was still a mystery to everyone.
Nocturnal had appeared about one year after the Jade Mountain Academy had been made, and the false prophecy had been fulfilled. He was almost a year old himself at the time, and many suspected that he had been born on the very night the strange comet had went through the sky, and Thorn had become the new Sandwing queen. This was one of Nocturnal's most least favorite topics, because he had always believed his parents had been bad.
Of course they had been. They had left him to die by Jade Mountain, not even with a note saying who his parents were. It was obvious that he was a Nightwing and Rainwing mix, but his time of birth was a mystery to all. It wasn't impossible though. The Nightwings had went into the Rainforest many times in secret, although it would be extremely strange, because the Nightwings were very serious about where a dragonet had come from, so at the least a Nightwing and Rainwing having a dragonet together would be illegal. Yet here he was.
There were some answers to the mystery that was Nocturnal's life though. If it was true that he was born under the comet, it would explain the weirder things about him. He had been born with golden yellow irises, and could see clearly in the dark. His eyes even glowed in flashes of light, much like other night creatures, hence his name. If the comet had actually acted as a third moon, that could also explain how his mind reading was so good for his age, and how he seemed to block any outside mind reading, no matter how much Nightwings tried to see what was going on in his head, or even if he himself tried to stop it. It just was a permanent effect, which is also why he had almost been called Skyfire, the name of the same rock that had fallen from the comet.
There were things Nocturnal didn't like about himself though. When he was about four, an extremely angry Skywing had attacked some of the teachers, and had succeeded in hurting some of the students. Out of nowhere, Nocturnal had come charging in a fit of rage. He had jumped onto the older dragons back and bit him in the neck. The very second he did this, he found to his fright that he could inject Rainwing venom out of his fangs into others like a pair of syringes. When the Skywing had quickly flung him off, howling in pain, he clawed and bit at the dragonet. To the regret and pain of both, it was revealed that this made it worse. Somehow, possibly from the comet, Nocturnal had Rainwing venom in his blood. It wasn't as powerful though. In the end though, the Skywing wasn't able to take his anger out on any one else.
For years, the teachers of the school had always wondered why Nocturnal always complained he felt like he was burning inside. It was revealed that day. It was also shown that his own acidic blood hurt him. Everyone at the school had worried that one day he would just melt into nothing right in front of them, especially with the nasty, quickly growing scars all over him that the Skywing had given him. But, as he had slept with the constant care of the School, the scars slowed down their growth, until they stopped all together, and started disappearing, being replaced by brand new scales. Right now, Starflight's theory was that, as Nocturnal's immune system faught against the venom in his blood, his growth may have increased internally. This led to Nocturnal's immediate recovery.
To this day, Nocturnal still felt a burning sensation deep inside him, and there was still one large gnarled scar going across his chest almost up to his arm, but now, he just saw it as more background noise, and almost always ignored it. He was twelve now, and he had learned to live with the pain.
As he walked down a tunnel in the cave, he thought of what he would do that day. He finally decided to try and go on a hunting party with Tsunami. Right as he reached the opening in the mountain and the waterfall, he saw a flash of golden scales, and decided to talk to Sunny before he left.
He slowly creeped up behind her, sure she hadn't seen him. "Boo," he said.
"Ha ha, nice try," she said, turning around with a smile. "You almost scared me that time. Lucky for me though, I've gotten used to jumpscares these past few eleven years."
"Dang it, suddenly now sneaking up on everybody isn't as fun as it used to be."
Sunny laughed. "Sorry to brake you're heart or dreams and all. So where are you off to?"
"Just trying to catch a hunting party with Tsunami and her class for today. Do you think she'll be happier after that date with Riptide she had last night?"
This made Sunny laugh so much, she started to almost cry. "Are you kidding? I know it went well, but if you know her as well as I think you do, then I think you would realize she'll find some reason to yell." Now her face became more serious. "Be careful out there okay? I don't want you crashing into trees, or impaling yourself into branches."
"Don't worry please. I'll be careful. Besides, I'm gonna try and go fishing with Tsunami and the other Seawings. Speeking of going places, you seemed like you were going somewhere. Anything important?"
"I'm just dropping by the Scorpion Den real quick to see how everything's going," she said as she started walking away to the edge of the entrance to the cave. "Oh and Nocturnal?"
"Yes?"
"You realize it's kind of my job to worry about you. It's everyone's job here. You know we're all considered a family here right?"
"Yes, I know," he said rolling his eyes, as Sunny waved goodbye and flew off towards the desert.
Then her words rang in his head again. "You know we're all considered a family here right?" He sighed, walking through the school, listening as each of the students in the school started to finally wake up. Nocturnal didn't know if he really wanted to be considered to be part of a family. His own unknown parents had set a bad example for him when they had left him alone to die. For his whole life he dreaded words including mother, father, son, parents, relatives, and family.
He loved each of the teachers like a "family" he guessed. He didn't like to use certain words though, because he thought of how bad his parents had been. In the end though, no matter how much he hated to admit it, he considered each of the "Dragonets of Destiny" his parents. He knew in his own way, that they were the most important dragons in the world, but not because they saved everyone from war. They had raised him like a son of sorts, which made them important to him, no matter what they ever did. He vowed that he would protect them, and any of their friends and family for as long as he lived, no matter how much it hurt him.

Later as the familiar sound of the gong crashing was heard, Nocturnal went to Tsunami's room. He wasn't considered a student, but he knew they'd let him go. Everyone at school saw him as part of their big happy family.

Okay, so I have to ask anyone who's reading this. How do you like it so far? Please answer in the comments section. Also, if you want one or more of your own characters in the story, feel free to give me a description of themselves, their personality, their history, and any other information. The more information that is given the better. I plan to do this same thing with putting others characters into the story throughout the whole thing, so if you aren't in it at first you will be later. If your character has friends and or siblings say that too. One other thing before I go. Nocturnal is my brother's character, and I put him in the story with his permission. If you want to pit Nocturnal in any stories of your own, please tell me first. Hope you liked this chapter. BYE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-)
