Chapter 2
Dawn walked through down the halls of the school, searching for the entrance to the Grand Hall. How easily it would be to get lost in here! Even though she had the map of the school memorized, it wasn't any easier to find her way around. Not much of a map reader she was.
Swiftwings had said to meet my the podium in the Grand Hall. At the time, Dawn thought not much of it. But now, she was probably lost, condemned to a lonely death in the caves of a fairly unknown mountain. Okay, maybe she wouldn't die. She just had to find a dragon and ask them for directions. Actually, that thought probably scared her more. What would they think of her? Would they figure out my secret? Hopefully not.
Rounding a corner, she almost ran into an IceWing and a SeaWing, locked in a heated conversation. The two dragons snapped there heads up.
"S-sorry about that," Dawn stuttered, trying to move around them. But the IceWing stopped her.
"No worries! I'm Capelin, in the Gold Winglet. What's your name?"
She was puzzled at his sudden conversational behavior. Weren't IceWings supposed to be all like, 'We're superior to all other tribes' and 'IceWings are the purest and most advanced tribe in Pyrrhia'. Or at least that's what Dawn had been told. She decided to answer anyway though, as this dragon was in her winglet.
"My name's Dawn, I'm also in the Gold Winglet."
Capelin smiled. "Cool! This is my clawmate, Pike. He's in our winglet too!"
Pike waved slightly. His scales were bluish gray, with a darker shade of that on his horns and eyes. His wings were light blue as well as his SeaWing light-up scales.
Capelin was a snowy white color with pale blue spiked spines. His eyes were a dark blue-gray-green, like the sea after a storm. His wings were also pale blue but with a crisp, icy sheen. Dawn realized that he was one of the IceWings she saw at the front of the school.
"By the way, do you know the way to the Grand Hall?" Dawn asked, trying to focus on the task at hand.
"Oh yeah, we just came from there, it's down that hall to the right." Pike said.
"Thanks!" She called, already halfway down the hallway.
She finally found her way to the Grand Hall and spotted Swiftwings talking with a pink and yellow RainWing and a green SeaWing with a gold armband. When Swiftwings spotted Dawn, she motioned for her to come over.
"Hey Dawn! Meet Kinkajou and Turtle!" Swiftwings said, flicking her tail at the to dragons. "They were here last year and they've been telling me about the way they helped defeat Darkstalker."
Dawn winced at the name. She had heard about the plague Darkstalker had unleashed on Pyrrhia, killing a large number of IceWings and even Queen Glacier herself. Dawn's mother had heard about it from a friend in Possibility. She still had nightmares about the ancient NightWing, even though she'd never seen him in person.
Kinkajou waved at Dawn with a beaming smile, "Hi! You're Dawn, right? I'm Kinkajou! Swiftwings was talking about you and how you're in a winglet together and that you're clawmates! My clawmate is named Moonwatcher, but she likes to be called Moon! Did I tell you how I met Swiftwings? Well I was at Queen Glory's hut, oh by the way I'm really good friends with Queen Glory, were practically sisters! Anyway I was at her hut and Swiftwings came in asking about NightWings having pet sloths and I interrupted saying-"
"Okay, that's enough, Kinkajou." Turtle piped up. Kinkajou laughed and quieted down, staring at Turtle with big eyes and a smile.
Who were these dragons? Kinkajou really like to talk and Turtle seemed like he was one of the calmest dragons she'd ever met. But they had a sort of bond that a Dawn couldn't place. Love, maybe? Shared memories? She decided not to ask.
Swiftwings coughed loudly to get their attention. "Well, I'm going to go show Dawn the winglets list, see you two around!"
Swiftwings led Dawn across the large room toward a board in which several scrolls were pinned to. "These are the list of dragons in the winglets and the schedules and who teaches each class." Swiftwings explained, grabbing two short scrolls from a bin. She handed one to Dawn. "This is our schedule, it tells when and where we're having our classes."
Dawn scanned the scroll, nodding every so often at what it said. Finally finishing it, she turned to Swiftwings. "Sounds good, I like it."
"Me too, let's go see-"
She was cut off my the loud sound of the gong. They looked up to see Tsunami standing in front of it.
"Time for bed, everyone! Report to your sleeping caves!" Tsunami yelled.
As students filed out of the Grand Hall, Dawn heard some grumbling about curfews and bossy SeaWings. She guessed that the bossy SeaWing they were referring to was Tsunami.
Once she and Swiftwings found their cave, they hopped up onto their beds and lay down. Dawn reached down and grabbed a faded orange wool blanket. It was one of the few things she had brought from home. She sensed that it was just about nighttime from the way the light had dimmed in the room.
Dawn stayed awake for a long part of the night, staring at the cave's ceiling. Her mind kept wandering back to her mother and how much she must be missing Dawn. Finally as the light from outside fully disappeared, she felt her eyelids grow heavy and the lull of sleep fell upon her.
