Chapter 5
Warm rays of light gently settled on the small tent, landing on Storm's sleeping form. She rolled over grouchily, having no intent on getting up. That was when she heard a gentle rustling behind her, and Aven's mind, as she stepped over her own sleeping bag, that she had neatly rolled up into a small bundle. The small Mudwing poked Storm in the side, gently, but when the blue dragonet just grunted and rolled over, Aven grabbed the sleeping mat out from under her.
Storm sat up with a snort, and rubbed her eyes with a groan, still trying to adjust to the light. She could already hear talon steps of the dragons milling around in the clearing outside her tent, getting ready to fly again.
"Wake up!" the Mudwing said loudly, and unprefferably in her ear. Storm fell flat on her face in suprise, and regaining a bit of balance, she sat up and gave Aven a look full of daggers.
"Don't look at me like that!" Aven said cheerfully, her smile reminding Storm of thoughs monkey's, after they had stolen your basket full of fresh blue berries. The thought almost make her laugh, nearly giving herself away. "We need to get going, and we don't need you to lag!"
"You sound like my dad!" She groaned, and lobbed her pillow at her friend. Aven cheerfully ducked, and went to pick it up. "That isn't a compliment." The blue dragoness warned, retrying to stand, then insted plopped back down with a groan.
"Come on..." her roommate said patiently, putting her wing on Storm's shoulder for support. Storm shrugged her off, grumbling inaubly about how she was independent, and needed no ones help. Aven just smiled, and slipped out the door-flap.
She gained her feet with the slowly, testing her wobbly legs, and instantly plopped right back down with a huff. The blue hybrid stood up even slowler, this time stepping torwards the entrance and then staggered forward, just pushing her way through the flap that hung over the entrance. She stood there blinking in the bright sunlight that peeked through the canopy of leaves above.
Right away the voices of the other dragons, external and internal, pummeled her ears. She nearly fled back into the tent, it was so loud. It was eardrum exploding! There were dragons milling around the small camp, putting out the remnants of the fires, chatting with one another, flying loops around the camp, or finishing their breakfast.
Storm felt a bit disoriented for a second, staring at the scene around her, and listening to the noise of the other dragon's thoughts thundering through her head. Finally, she blinked rapidly, her own thoughts slowly coming back into place. Slipping back into her tent, she rolled up her mat, and slipped it into a bag. Then, she took out a small brown paper bag, and stepped outside, into deafening noise.
She took a deep, slow breath to steady herself, trying to ignore the thoughts of the other dragons that seemed to have filled her mind, leaving absolutely no space for her own.
Storm did her best to slip into the jungle unnoticed, carefully avoiding crashing into any other dragons. Finally, she was able to step under the low-hanging willow, and away from the deafening mass of dragonets, into the cool, quiet of the Rainforest in the morning. Ferns brushed her sides lightly, and the moss under her talons, felt soft and damp.
She was listening to bird calls and her talons thumped on the layered ground, muted due to the unuasally soft ground, when she heard a small snap. It was quiet, easy to miss, but Stormseer caught it. Well on one talon, she wouldn't have heard it if she couldn't see the future, on the other though, she should have heard it coming since she could read minds, yet could it be a false elarm? A cascade of frightened thoughts of danger flooded her mind, almost making her dizzy. No, it couldn't be, for animals didn't have a soft hum for their minds, nor heavy wing beats s they tried to escape.
She was on her feet in an instant, raising her wings in lift off, when she heard the a gong signaling for the dragonets to gather to leave. Storm growled at the direction she had heard the noise, her talons digging into the moist dirt below her, then spun around, her amulet jingling almost inaudably and stalked back towards the camp, muttering to herself.
Once again she didn't see the eyes watching her depart from the trees above her, before it spun around and disappeared in a cascade of leaves and branches.
