Chapter 2
Storm read the letter over again as she sat, curled up, on her patio, the thin rays of dawn leeking through the leaves above her. Her heart twisted in confused knots, why, why, why, had they chosen her? Of all dragons, her? She was a hybrid, besides, who would pick her out of, well, everybody they could pick! One of Queen Glory's daughters would be much better, the hybrid Rainwing Princesses were old enough, and their father, Deathbringer, had tried to bribe the Queen for years. Storm had got the from Kinkajou's mind, while picking fruit. She'd also got that the next egg was thought to be a prince, and soon after, Prince Cepheus, hatched.
She layed down, her head near the edge of the wooden porch. Yes, it even could have been Kinkajou's daughters, like Oyster or Marine. The twins would have loved to go, but their father, the seawing prince, Turtle, never approved, he thought that it was to dangerous, Storm had actually heard that from his thoughts. Why couldn't her father be that way?
"Because I think it would be good for you." her father spoke behind her, obviosly answering her thought as if she haad spoken it aloud. She huffed a opened her mouth to add a sarcastis comment, then saw the look in her father's eyes, and clearly thought better of it. She turned away from him.
She sighed and turned to face him again. "But why?" she asked, struggling to keep the whine out of her voice."Why me?" Storm asked, going over the carefully rehearsed speech."Me of all dragons?" When he didn't anwser, she plunged write in to her speech. "I'm a hybrid, a mindreader, and foreteller of the future, a dragon that no one would want to be friends with!" She said this last part before bursting out crying.
Nightseer put a wing around his daughter, and she could hear him think, is this really the best for her? But his voice didn't waver when he spoke.
"Maybe that's why they chose you," he said softy, Storm razed her head, her eyes still full of tears.
"What do you mean?" she asked quietly, her voice still unsteady.
Nightseer gently wiped her tears with a small rag. "Oh, my little one..." he murmured, and Storm wrinkled her snout at him, and he let out a small laugh. "Ok, maybe not that little." Her father sighed again, and half closed his eyes. "Be strong. Promise me that."
Storm took a deep breath, and let it out slowly. "Ok." she said, pushing all her worries out of the way. "I'll be ready."
He smiled, and raised his head to look at the stars that had started to peek through the branches above. Storm stared at the three moons that were half way through the sky. A cool breeze blew gently, carrying scents of life, and the sound of rushing water."You were born on a night like this," he mumured, startling her. "You had stopped moving in your egg, and your mother stayed all night with you," Nightseer laughed softly, shaking his head, caught up in his memories."In the morning I checked on her, and a beuatiful dragonet was cuddled in her talons... you, and you and her both were fast asleep." He turned to her, a sad smile painted on his lips. "You are what's left her, her only daughter, and I will always do what I think is best for you."
"I'll hold you to that." She said playfully. He smiled and she turned to face him.
He gently stroked her head, and put a claw under her chin raising her head to meet her eyes. "As long as the moons are in the sky she will with you, my little one."
"But are they really the same moons without you?" He smiled gently, and slipped back inside, leaving the question hanging in the air unanwsered.
Storm waited till she couldn't here his mind anymore, signaling that he was asleep, and walked out onto the cool grass, and layed down on her back and stared at the stars. Soon the sound of crickets lolled her to sleep.
