All it saw was darkness. All it remembered was darkness. It knew nothing else but this bliss of nothingness and the close, smooth walls that pressed around it. But it had an urge to get out. It needed to get out. And, as it scratched and bit at the thin walls, a marvelous cracking noise filled it's underdeveloped eardrums. Small bits of that wall that had trapped it for so long crumbled down all along the rim and it pushed upward into the light.
          Beautiful moonlight from the three full moons pulsed just beyond it's reach.
          The dragonet reached out small black talons and tried to grab at it but it dipped and bobbed. He let out a frustrated yelp. 
          "He's a lively one." Came a voice somewhere beyond. The dragonet ignored it and kept on leaping at the moonlight. Then he saw an inky trail of blackness behind him. He let out a long shriek and tried to run, but stumbled and fell among the cracked remains of his eggshell. It caught up to him, engulfed him. 
          "Look, he runs at his own shadow." the voice added. The dragonet thought he could hear another voice buried behind the dragon but when he looked, there was nothing there. They must be coming from the strange dragon's mind. "I'll call him Shadowfall." The dragonet stood up, shook the supposed shadow from his black, and listened. To the strange dragon's mind. 
         "Oh I do hope he's worth it." came the words that the dragonet slowly started to put together from the other's head. "He better be," the dragon thought some more. "If not, I'll just throw him to the Nightwings. See how they like it." The dragon stood up and the newly named Shadowfall could see the gleam of the reflected white scales, polished to near perfection. 
          "Come with me." the dragon said gruffly to Shadowfall. He stared at the white dragon and without waiting for a response, the white dragon picked him up and carried him, swinging from his jaws, to a hole in the ground, away from the moonlight, away from the open air, and ready to be drenched in shadows.
