Darkness Arising
Shadowfall lifted his head and felt a prick of anger. The Talons were coming for him. To capture him again. From his place behind the rocks, he watched the sky, too tired to move. But no dragons came. Had Ice lied? It wasn't beyond that slimy dragon. So Shadowfall got up, stretching his stiff muscles, and rose into the air. He set his sight on the mountains on the distant horizon. And he started flying. And flying for what seemed to be hours, until the sun set. The goal had been to fly through the night but that plan failed. He felt his eyes droop and he started to spiral from the air before he flapped his wings determinedly and glided to the ground.
Ice is my father, he thought incredulously as he settled down in a hidden nook just as the moon started to rise. Ice, of all dragons. The beautiful moonlight wavered before his eyes, beckoning him, goading him. What is moonlight really? he started to wonder, feeling the first warnings of doom in his heart. Just beams reflected from a giant star making the earth orbit. He wondered if his powers really did come from the moons. Just some big rocks in the sky making him who he was. He glared at the moons, two of them full and shining, round and silvery, looking at him all wise-like and making him feel incredibly small.
But not for long, he thought. If I do become the ruler of this world. Although there was so much to rule. Shadowfall felt his eyes droop and he covered his head with his wings, just another shadow hidden in the black ground.
It was a dream, yet it felt so real.
Shadowfaller walked among the ranks of dragons, his head high.
"If one of you dares to disobey me," he roared. "You will suffer beyond death!" He let out a vicious roar.
I am a half-breed, he thought darkly, yet I have proven to the world I am powerful. Far beyond what they could be.
"You do not dig in your head to the earth quite deeply enough." he roared at one incredibly skinny Seawing. The small dragon stared up at him with terrified eyes. Shadowfaller roared and struck a terrible blow. The Seawing fell with a whimper.
"That must teach you forsaken dragons something." he growled to the rows of kneeling dragons, his voice dangerously quite. "Do not disobey me, now or ever." He felt a claw-scratch of pride, and that scratch oozed out his success. Shadowfaller had succeeded in becoming ruler of the world.
Shadowfall jerked up with a pant.
"Found you." a voice said. Shadowfall looked up with round, black eyes reflecting the rising sun. It was a Skywing, her huge wings tucked and blinking cold, orange eyes at him.
"To what a Nightwing may be doing on our territory I would like to know." she continued, her voice cold. "I'm afraid you will have to come with me." She blinked at him with just a hint of sudden warmth. "Those spikes on your back resemble an Icewing's you know." She opened her mouth to say more when Shadowfall felt a surge of anger. She had called him what he was, what he wanted to hide. The darkness in his heart seemed to overpower the light.
"How dare you!" he roared in a terrible anger. He rose into the air, his wings powering him up, up, into the morning sky. He dived down at her and she spread her wings. Like in his dream, he hit her with a blow so hard, she yelled, a sound that echoed across the crisp air, and fell, unconscious. He fluttered down next to her and snarled.
"Never, ever, call me that." he said softly and scratched her unconscious body. Then he kicked it viciously and started to fly towards the mountains again, not a hint of remorse in his heart.
Several hours later, he perched on a high mountaintop and watched the sun as it settled into it's highest point. He had reached the mountain range, after dreaming about it his whole life. Then, a whole ring of Skywings rose up, surrounded him.
"We finally have you." said the Skywing he had knocked unconscious, the warmth long gone. She bared her teeth and Shadowfall knew, heard in her mind what she was going to say the second before she said it. Because in her mind, he could hear that she had figured it out.
"Icewing." she finished. His mind went black, black with rage, black with the pain of his life. He realized what he was doing the second before he did it. He could hear the attack moves flitting through the heads of the Skywings and he knew how to counterattack while they started.
"I knew I should have killed you." he snarled as he started to lose the battle. Then, something came over him. The power from the moonlight surged through him, except that power had became black and sticky. With a surge, the strands expelled the Skywings from his scales and he was free. They screamed and he laughed. He soared into the sky, ready to rule the world.
