Chapter4: Sheltered in the Sand
Venom stood nervously in front of Capuchin, Ash, and Dreamseeker. In the throne hall of Queen Sandstorm's palace, they waited for Her Majesty to return from the oases so they could thoroughly delivered their news. Since Venom was a SandWing, the others thought It'd be best if she warned the queen of Pyyrhia's new enemy.
Queen Sandstorm brushed past the guards on either side of the room's entrance, and strode, quite nervously, up to her throne. She seemed to settle herself and calm her nerves as she sat down. She spotted the odd group of dragons before her.
"State your business." she addressed, with an approving nod.
"Your Majesty." Venom swept into a low bow, the others following suit. "We come from the city of Possibility. A huge bomb has struck, as I have a feeling you may be aware of. We come to warn you. Whatever attacked is a force to be reckoned with, we only survived by seeking refuge outside the city before it happened. Please, take into consideration each of your subjects. Establish curfews, double your soldiers, whatever you have to do. These things have already taken over the Sky Palace. Queen Fierce's kingdom is in upheaval. They'll be headed here next."
"My, oh my." Sandstorm stuttered. "This is, devastating. I'll take your warning to heart, my friends." she gestured to her soldiers. "You heard her, get General Singe. I want soldiers doubled, more lookouts. Scout everything in every horizon." Sandstorm looked back down to Venom. "What do theses things look like?"
"Giant black birds, their wings don't flap, and they screech across the sky with a fiery fury." Ash stated. He was the best with descriptions. "Be on the lookout for them all clustered in an orderly formation."
"Got it." Sandstorm said. She nodded at her soldiers with authority. "I want the entire Sand Kingdom to know about this message by tomorrow morning. Screech from the rooftops, make copies of scrolls." She looked at her record manager to her left, who was furiously transcribing everything in this conversation onto a lengthy, empty scroll. He nodded. "And for the love of a scorpion's sting, get these poor dragons something to eat! This NightWing is half starved!"
Dreamseeker smiled sheepishly.
SandWings in the room rushed off in all directions with their queen's new orders. Sandstorm was very good at her job. The SandWings haven't had a problem since Queen Thorn after the War of SandWing Succession. No wonder Sandstorm's plethera of daughters and nieces haven't moved a claw to challenge her. The only challenger was killed fifty years ago. Sandstorm even pleaded with her oldest daughter about her choice, that she knew it would be better if they didn't fight. They both knew how it would end, that the tribe would be in upheaval if her daughter succeeded. Needless to say, Princess Sunbeam was gifted a quick and painless death. Now, everybody was well-fed and happy and at peace.
"Where do you suggest we head next?" Venom asked. "We'll bring our message to who you think is best."
"I need someone to take a message to Queen Icepick and Queen Moss! Immediately! Word is to be spread to every kingdom!" Sandstorm continued to bark her orders more like a high-ranked general than a queen. "Keep panic to a minimum, people!I don't want this continent falling into ruin like the dragonet days!" She turned swiftly to Venom, sliding serenely from her throne.
"You dears may stay for a night, rest your weary wings and get yourselves fed. I would throw a small feast in your favor, as I do for all my guests. However, given the circumstances at hand, I hope you can understand. Rest up, and set out in the morning for Jade Mountain. The remaining of the old Dragonets of Destiny will spread word through their various links. Make sure to tell the RainWings to suit up too. Their territory is perfect for any threat to overthrow and infest." Sandstorm smiled sweetly. "Can you all do that for me? The flight is quite lengthy." She eyed Capuchin's missing leg and stubby tail.
"Of course, Your Majesty." Venom nodded once.
"I thought as much. You all are very strong-willed. Due to this alarming crisis, I will not be able to send you off with good-byes tomorrow." Queen Sandstorm kissed each dragon gently on their foreheads. "But you have my prayers and blessings. Safe journeys, friends. When this is all over, the Sand Kingdom will welcome you with open wings and the feast that is deserved." she smiled. "My soldier Silt will escort you to your chambers. Mind his words, what little ones he has to say, and you will all be safe. Farewell, my Possibilities."
The queen winged out of the throne room. Flanks of guards flew about to protect her. She shouted her orders, kept the peace in the Sand Palace, like a good queen should.
A burly, odd-looking SandWing approached Venom, he grunted. His scales were a dark yellow-tan, with armor-plated scales of light brown, a pale underbelly, a flat, broad snout, and curved horns.
"What are you?" Dreamseeker asked, looking curiously disgusted.
"I am a dragon with a soul." Silt answered. "What are you? Scrawny NightWing doesn't look like he's eaten any all his life.
Dreamseeker scowled.
"I am a hybrid. Half Sand, half Mud, all loving to my sister and loyal to my queen." Silt said, planting the butt end of his wicked three-pronged spear on the sandstone. "Now follow me, or sleep outside where the buzzards can find you."
The hybrid led the dragons down many dark hallways, ending up at a room with heavy stone doors. He shoved them open. Inside, sat a thin Sand-Rain hybrid, fangs poking out of her upper lip. She was busily sweeping the dust off of the beds and sleeping ledges with her prehensile tail.
"Orchid. Time to leave our guests to sleep." Silt said, beckoning the little hybrid. "I have warm dried lizards at home for supper."
"Alrighty, brother!" Orchid smiled toothily. She bowed politely to Venom and company and skipped out the door behind Silt.
The four dragons stood around the room awkwardly for a while. A meal of camel was brought to them, and Dreamseeker happily chowed down. Capuchin sprawled his limbs about a sleeping ledge and pulled out a scroll to read. Ash sat in the corner having a mental breakdown.
"This is, this is all a nightmare. Yeah. A bad dream. I'll wake up tomorrow right next to Flicker, in our lovely stone house in Possibility, which most definitely did not blow up." he chanted to himself over and over again. Ash may be strong, but he wasn't too strong mentally right now.
Venom curled on a pile of furs, under Capuchin's dropping wings, and looked out the window. She got tired, laid her head in her talons, and was soon fast asleep.
