Chapter 9: Queen Toucan
Venom the SandWing walked along the wet floor of the Rainforest kingdom. On her tail, sat the sweet figure of her brother, Insight. on her left arm, a leather band accented with silver was hastily tied back in place. To her right, limped the RainWing Capuchin, on her right, the one named Hibiscus, and overhead, the big, red shape of the SkyWing, Ash, gliding above the others' heads, a lookout.
Venom felt more comfortable in her scales, four feet on the ground, and the comfortable weight of her wings, shielding her from the cold raindrops that pattered against their pale membranes. She was safer, with a barb that could kill with a stab and some time, and fire that could lick away scales from your face, and teeth and claws sharper than any sword. This way, she could protect herself.
This way, she could protect the little family she had left.
Venom glanced back at Insight, sitting near the end of her tail. His head craned back, big, bright eyes turned up towards the raindrops. He was happy. Happy his sister knew who she was, happy he was close to her, and her heated scales.
That wasn't her only family, though. Venom glanced around at these other dragons. They were her family too. Capuchin, kinda the cranky uncle. Ash, the paranoid protector, and Hibiscus. She wanted to join them, and they'd agreed. She was like the little sister, sweet, and innocent and positive.
Even Dreamseeker. He was gone, and Venom knew she wasn't the only one who'd missed him. He was misunderstood. She couldn't comprehend how much his visions must hurt him. He probably never slept, because they came the strongest in his dreams. She didn't blame him, being the only one seeing how each gruesome timeline ended. No wonder he'd leave like that. Probably didn't want to see his friends being graphically murdered.
Venom couldn't quite figure out where she fit in in their little dysfunctional family, but she was okay with it. Maybe after this whole ordeal was over, if they survived, she and Insight could live with them as scavengers, happily, together.
The troupe made their way eventually to the palace of Queen Toucan of the RainWings. The brightly-colored dragon welcomed them with open, pastel wings.
"I'm so glad you came when you did." she said quickly, ushering them inside her palace hut, and out of the rain. "Your message really helped to prepare my tribe for that crash. Most are still quite uneasy about Pyyrhia's new threat. My scouts have been working round-the-clock on patrolling, protecting and searching the Rain Kingdom for any more of those unsightly things!" she rambled. "Speaking of which, you and Hibiscus searched that wreck. Did you find any information?"
"Yes." Venom said. "We searched the Flier that crashed. "Turns out, Pyyrhia's enemy are the scavengers."
"What?!" Toucan turned around. "You must be- OH MY GOSH! THERE'S ONE ON YOU!" She screeched, turning ghost-white. Guards immediately leaped on Venom's tail. In a flash of multi-colored scales, Insight was trapped in their talons.
"Venom!" he squeaked, not struggling less the RainWings snap his neck in the here-and-now.
"IT SPOKE!" Toucan screamed. "OH MY GOSH KILLITKILLITKILLIT!!
"Don't injure him!" Venom shouted at the guards, tail poised. "That one is defenseless, no weapons, no harm. He is my pet, and not the enemy!"
"Do as she says." Capuchin added, speaking to the Queen. "If he dies, the consequences to the RainWing tribe will be nothing short of severe."
"Capuchin! You wouldn't!" Toucan said. "My own brother?!"
"Then put him down. I promise, he won't harm a soul. If he does, I'll kill him myself, publicly, you can execute me too if you'd like."
Toucan was quick-witted, knowing that her brother wasn't bluffing. "You heard my baby brother."
With a flick of her tail, the guards put Insight, dazed but uninjured, back on the floor. They bowed to Capuchin and the others.
"Our apologies, prince Capuchin! We didn't realize-"
"Yeah yeah." Capuchin rolled his eyes. "I don't need my talons licked." he turned to Toucan. "Listen, sis. I hope you don' mind, but we need a place to stay in the Rain Kingdom for a while. We might be able to find out more about that flier that crashed."
"Sounds like a SUPER plan, little brother!" Queen Toucan smiled warmly. "Guards, have a few personal escorts find a suitable hut for our guests. And someone fetch me my scribe! I want a message sent out to every queen; in one weeks' time I want them all here for a meeting on stopping our enemy! And tell the people to clean up a bit, we're going to be having company!"
