Chapter 8: The Secret
Tears streamed down the little scavenger's face as Venom held him.
"Sister! Armband bad! Take! OFF!" Insight shouted again, desperately.
"Told you", Capuchin said simply.
Venom couldn't believe her ears. While it was quite a broken speaking, Insight was speaking. Ash whanged his head on the roof of the flier in surprise. As the SkyWing rubbed his head in pain, Insight flung himself into a hug, arms wrapped tightly around Venom's throat.
"Please, listen." he sobbed. "Kate..."
"Take the armband off, idiot", Capuchin said, breaking Venom from her amazed trance.
The SandWing reached down to her arm, claws grazing the silver-studded leather band.
"Please..." Insight sobbed again.
"Hold him." Venom ordered, handing the scavenger to Capuchin. The RainWing looked suddenly confused, not knowing what to do with a speaking, sobbing, scavenger.
Carefully, Venom hooked her claws around the band. She gulped, not knowing what would happen. With a swift flick of her wrist, and the SNAP of the leather strands breaking, Venom flung the armband into the grass.
All went dark.
"Venom! Venom, wake up!" Ash yelled.
Venom opened her big, now brown eyes. She tried to stretch her wings, yet there were none there. No tail either. Her sandy scales replaced with smooth, soft, pale skin. A head of dark fur draped down over her snout, er, nose.
Ash was, bigger than she remembered. The SkyWing held her in his talons, claws curled around her protectively. No, she had gotten smaller, and squishier. Her teeth weren't as pointy either, and contained in neat little rows in her small mouth.
Venom shivered, and wrapped her arms around her bare chest. It was much colder than she'd originally thought, too.
Insight struggled in Capuchin's talons.
"Sister!" He yelled. "Sister!" Insight's face twisted into a smile. The RainWing let go of him, and Insight tumbled to the grass. He picked himself up, and ran to Ash. The scavenger climbed the SkyWing's arm, and threw his arms around Venom. He started laughing, and crying. "You're okay...." He said.
Insight slid down Ash's arm and ran into the wreckage of the flier. A moment later, he returned dressed in an outfit not unlike the one Venom found the dead scavenger in. He brought an extra suit with him, and helped Venom put it on. It was much warmer than not having clothes on at all. It was weird. She'd never worn anything over her scales as a dragon; but at the same time, she felt more protected.
"I can't believe what I'm seeing here..." Ash mumbled, completely boggled. "She's one of them..."
"No! Not like that at all!" Venom said, sitting up in Ash's palms. "I, wow. I am a scavenger... But that's not the point! It's still me! I'd never betray you guys, or dragons in general!"
"What did she squeak?" Capuchin asked.
Venom sighed and crossed her arms "Desert-headed sand-snorters..."
"You'll need this." Insight said. He wriggled the wire-bird pendant off his neck and slipped it over Venom's. "Kate, sister. I am so glad you're okay... I thought I'd lost you forever. I never thought I'd find you again, even if you were only missing for a month..." He smiled warmly.
Venom looked up at Ash again. "You hear me now?" she asked. This pendant apparently only allowed her to speak broken dragon, but nevertheless, it worked.
"You've got explaining to do, Venom." Capuchin growled. "Have you been working with them this whole time?"
"No! NO!" She waved her little hands frantically. "Never! I might be little scavenger, but I still dragon! On the inside! Never would betray my friends!" She turned to Insight. "Explain! What happen to me?"
"It was a little over a month ago. We were in a plane, like this one. You and me, and three of our good friends. We were coming to Dragontropolis to build a new life. We got into the mountains, looking for the base some of us had set up for people looking to help in the dragon overthrow. When a big red one like that came out of nowhere and crashed our plane." he pointed at Ash. "Many of us, after having left the continent for so long, decided to come back and avenge the deaths of so many people, eaten by dragons. Our own mother was a late-night snack for these things.
After the crash, a big Desert Crawler like what you were, she came and stole you. When I tried to attack, take you back, she scratched me with that big scorpion barb. The rest of us were picked up by that Mud Muncher, and stayed in that wicker cage. Until the day in the market, I saw you, as one of them! I knew because you still wore that armband that mother, our human mother, gave you."
Insight lifted up his pant leg. Wrapped around his ankle, was a leather and silver band, just like Venom's.
"I knew it was cursed. You had no idea who I was, who you were."
"What's he saying?" Ash asked.
Venom, tears in her eyes, turned up to the red dragon and told him what Insight had just said.
"He's not wrong." Capuchin spoke up when Venom had finished. He held the armband in his claws. "This thing was enchanted to make the wearer into Venom the SandWing, with memories of being the daughter of Rattle and Wasteland. That she was to be an artist, and supposedly just moved to Possibility."
"My own, mother..." Venom said.
"She isn't your mother, Kate." Insight said again. "Our mother's name was Delilah, and I am your brother, Cameron.Everything that band told you was a lie." Insight said.
Reluctantly, Capuchin handed the band to Venom's outstretched hands. Insight took it, and placed it in a backpack on his shoulders.
"The question is," Ash said, sitting back on his haunches, Venom still in his palms. "Is do you want to stay like this?"
Venom placed a hand on one of Ash's claws. She had no idea. If this is what she really was, she should stay like this.... But she remembered nothing of what Insight said. She didn't remember her human mother, or anything else. She remembered her whole life as, Venom. Her art lessons as a dragonet, her first sale as a merchant in Possibility.
Even if she didn't remember anything. She still trusted Insight, like he was telling the truth, she knew it.
"It's not safe. Me like this..." Venom spoke, looking down at her little paws. "Dragons will know, soon, scavengers the enemy. I want to be Venom, at least until all is over..." she started to cry. Insight rested a paw on hers, and smiled.
"I understand. No matter dragon, or human, you're still my sister, and I still love you..."
