Chapter 18: A Hastened Goodbye
Venom the SandWing stood the her full height, pale wings unfurled to trap the light gusts of air thick with smoke and heat. Her armband was tied, once again, to her arm.
Ash and Capuchin ran forward, squeezing Venom in a back-breaking embrace.
"We have to go, Venom." Ash said as Insight placed himself on Venom's shoulder. "There's a war to be fought here now. I know this decision might be hard, but please, consider what side of this chaos you're on. Choose. Whichever your choice is, we respect it, but we're here to drive scavengers back where they came from."
With that, the SkyWing fell out of the open throne room, and soared away.
Capuchin struggled, without his back legs, it was difficult to drag himself to the edge of the room. But soon, with a reassuring smile over his shoulder, Capuchin flew out into the air on shredded wings.
Venom looked down at Insight.
"I know I've spent my whole life with you, apparently. But all I've ever known is dragonkind." she said. "My heart stays here, with them; and so does my body, dragon or not."
Insight nodded slowly, somberly. "I understand, sister. Not worry though. The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb. Go. I will find way to flee back to my home. I'll take plane with blue stripes."
Venom let her armband drop to the floor for a moment.
When she were human again, Venom ran into Insight's arms, and hugged him as much as he hugged her.
"I'll never forget you, brother." Venom sobbed slightly.
"That's all I ask. And stay safe. Protect the home of the family you've known."
"You said the plane you'd take had blue stripes?"
"Yes."
"Not a soul will so much as scratch it. Be safe, tell our family I said hello." Venom smiled. "And maybe, one day, when this is all over, you can come back. And I'll be here."
"That sounds nice." Insight said. He slipped a piece of paper to Venom. "A map. A map to our home. Just so you know where I am."
With that, Insight tied the band around Venom's arm for the last time.
When Venom's eyes cleared from the blinding light, Insight was gone. The map still clutched in her talons.
