Prolouge
The Brightest Night was, in fact, in five days.
It was a little disappointing. To have your dragonet hatched on the Brightest Night was very honorable. Everybody knew about how the Dragonets of Destiny were hatched on that night. But it was better than nothing.
In the marshy swamps, there was a female MudWing who was carelessly watching over five eggs. No male was present, but it wasn't like she cared. For all she knew, the father could've just fallen off a cliff and died. Well, that would be sad, especially if this batch of dragonets turned out well, but she was ranked high in the new MudWing breeding program-- the eggs she produced were usually very healthy. So she'd just get a perfectly good new partner if anything happened to her current one.
In the bitter, cold reaches of the Ice Kingdom, a male and female IceWing were sitting next to a small IceWing dragonet, which was battling with a rather soft and nonthreatening stuffed NightWing. The female looked at the father and smiled. He was exactly what an IceWing was supposed to be after hatching- big, strong, and ready to tear apart his enemies. The male returned the happy glance. But in neither of their gazes was what was seen in other Tribes, in the parents eyes when they saw their dragonet. There was no love in that hollow ice cave.
In the polar opposite of the Ice Kingdom, the Sand Kingdom was anxiously waiting. In a large and cozy cave with sand sprinkled along the floor, a dragonet burst out of it's egg for the first time. A large SandWing adorned with all kinds of jewelry smiled, but on the inside was thinking, My third heir to the throne. My THIRD heir. What was I thinking? Now my throne is even more threatened, and even more quickly. But I guess it's better than no heirs. That would be dangerous. Two other smaller SandWings stood behind her. One was sharpening her claws on a small, flat stone, looking highly uninterested. The other kept leaning forward, as if desperate to see her new brother or sister. By the fear radiating from her mother, it was probably another sister.
In the SeaWing palace, a small dragonet, probably only about a year old, maybe even less, was watching as his queen teared viciously at his mother, who was flapping about, desperately trying to get away. The SeaWing queen sliced a claw down the mother's exposed underbelly, and blood tainted the clear waters. The mother screamed and a few guards raced over and dragged her away. The last sign the dragonet saw of it's mother was a small stream of blood. The queen glared at the dragonet. "Stupid thing. Cursed at hatching. It had such a stupid, traitorous mother. But I suppose it can be trained,". She lit up a few of her markings on her scales, and her mate swam over. "Whirl? I'd like you to... train this little dragonet here. Tell him nothing of his mother, or her backstory. I'll tell you the story I made up for him when I finish it,".
A small NightWing was staring up at the stars. She could hear a few NightWings trading thoughts back and forth at each other. What they didn't share was visions. Mooncaster narrowed her eyes. She hated her Tribe. They got to read thoughts and act normal in peace, but she was one of the few dragonets that ever had visions. She'd seen things that those dragonets would probably think was scarier than the pathetic evil 'monsters' the NightWings behind her were thinking up together. Her Tribe was stupid, just like all the other ones. She didn't have to be stupid, though. She had seen a vision. One that would change her life, and theirs, forever.
Scorch leaned back, and she felt the desperate urge to say 'I'm so sorry,' but she couldn't, because her mother was right behind her. The dragonet screamed and writhed, its scales turning as black as a NightWing's. The other dragons who watched either cheered or grunted unhappily because they bet on the wrong dragonet. Scorch glared at them. How could they do this? Pit dragonet against dragonet when they knew who was going to be the winner? She was only a year old and already she knew how cruel dragons were.
Iguana stormed away from the RainWing queen, seething in fury. There was no reason why they couldn't attack the other Tribes with their venom and take over them. They ruled over the NightWings. Why stop there? Iguana's tail lashed as she lifted into the air, glaring at the rainforest. She didn't hesitate to use her venom. It was given to RainWings for a reason. Who cared about Queen Glory's law about only using it for self defense? Queen Glory had been dead for ages and she always would be.
Author's Note: Hey, how'd you enjoy the first chapter? I'd like feedback for this- should I write a chapter for each separate character, going in a certain order, or write it like I did this? Thanks for reading. :3 Also, if this is mature to you, I will change the settings gladly. Don't want to bother anybody. So, please tell me. Thank you.
