Chapter 2 - Mire

The marshlands were everything he'd ever known. Stories of other kingdoms were there, but Mire had not the imagination to even possibly describe or image snow. All he saw was marshland, all across the world, devouring everything except the Rainforest, which he'd seen before in the distance. And that was terrifying.

Mire didn't very much like the idea of not seeing anything else in the world. But his mother, Heron, was very strict on keeping her dragonets close by. "I want you kids to grow up a strong, powerful troop," she'd lecture. "I don't need any of you wandering about getting your tail stuck where it doesn't belong, and then getting killed,".

But Mire knew better than to protest. One time he'd interjected, "But I want to see snow, Mama!". Heron had fixed him with an icy glare, and Mire froze, terrified that the glare would freeze him alive. "S-sorry..." He'd whimpered and backed off, trembling as his mother continued the story.

Mire had tried to get his other siblings to share his curiosity. He'd once whispered in Frog's ear, "We should see the snow someday,". Frog was his closest sibling, the BigWings of the litter. Frog loved all his siblings, of course, but he spent more time around Mire. Frog had nodded in excitement and whispered back, "Let's go now! Mama can't stop us forever,".

So the two had wandered off that night, and went by memory towards the Ice Kingdom. They didn't make it long before two MudWing soldiers had caught up and brought them back. Heron was furiously screeching, demanding that Queen Gila punish the two. Queen Gila had done nothing, of course, stating that it was only a case of two curious MudWings. Heron had opened her jaws to retort, but the Queen had simply stated, "You shouldn't hold on too tightly to those dragonets of yours, Heron,". The MudWing had said nothing after.

Mire lifted his gaze to the sky. Perhaps he would find out something more, one day. Until then, he was left in the dark, his wings plastered to his sides, completely blind. Perhaps he'd see the light. Or perhaps not.
