A Scavenger's Guide To The Dragons Of Pantala
(Contains very, VERY minor spoilers for book eleven, The Lost Continent. Nothing about the actual plot is revealed, but there are a few small details that you're better off experiencing in the book itself if you haven't read it.)
HiveWings
Appearance: HiveWings have slender, strong, and muscular bodies, with four thin and clear segmented wings that are similar to that of dragonflies and other insects. HiveWings can be red, yellow, green, brown and/or orange, but always have some black scales among them due to their shared ancestor. Some can even be almost completely black in color. Some HiveWings have freckle-like scales. Confirmed eye colors include black, dark orange, brown, red, amber, yellow-gold, and green. The "yellow-orange-green glow" of HiveWing eyes is mentioned. The pair of long, curved, and smooth-looking horns that raise slightly above their head with the tips curving slightly forward gives them an almost regal appearance. They may also have wrist spikes. Some are hatched with stingers in their wrists or tails.
Abilities: Vary from dragon to dragon; examples include stingers extending from their wrists/tails that contain venom or a paralysis toxin known as nerve poison, emitting a strong horrible stench that drives away enemies, boiling acid sprayed from their tail, or venomous teeth/claws/stingers. Some HiveWings may not have any of these abilities, but all of them have an internal clock that tells them the exact time of day.
How the other tribes view them: HiveWings are seen as oppressive, arrogant, aggressive and snobby, and justifiably so, as unlike other tribe stereotypes, most of them act exactly like that.
Society: HiveWings are first-class citizens in their society. They live in Hives ruled by the Queen and her female relatives, most of them sisters. Unlike other dragon tribes in both Pantala and Pyrrhia, the Queen's relatives who rule the other Hives are not titled as Princess, but Lady. However, the Queen still outranks the Ladies. Despite this, she still allows others to rule the Hives, so they feel like they had some power. It is also difficult for HiveWings to get a divorce because they need permission from the queen in order to do so. If the queen allowed a HiveWing couple to get divorced, they had to go through a whole separation request process that is very complicated. It is unknown what kind of work HiveWings need to do in order to become divorced but the process is difficult. It's considered strongly forbidden for a HiveWing and a SilkWing to get together. HiveWings use SilkWings as servants, and use them for personal gain in many ways, such as using them as cooks, butlers, and other jobs. Servants followed their mistress. HiveWings from Jewel Hive own SilkWing servants as an accessory, often striving to make them look more extravagant than the others. They often make them stand in windows just looking pretty, or parade them around.
Names: HiveWings are named after a variety of insects and bugs. Dragons from the tribe can be named after different species of bee and wasp, as well as ants, beetles, weevils, crickets, praying mantis, etc. They can also be named after types of worms, such as Earthworm and Bloodworm. There is also one arachnid name, being Vinegaroon.
SilkWings
Appearance: SilkWings can be any color under the sun except black, such as olive green, aquamarine, lavender, indigo, amber, orange, dark purple, peach, gray, and red. They sometimes have darker accent colors on their scales. The wing's membranes appear to be different colors too, as well as certain segments between the digits being a different color than the rest of the wings. SilkWings are hatched without any wings. When they turn about 6 years old, they will undergo Metamorphosis. After a few days, they will come out of the cocoon with their wings. Contrary to popular belief, SilkWings' wings are just as strong as any dragon's, rather than weak like an insect's.
Abilities: Can spin silk (after metamorphosis), detect vibrations with their antennae, have an internal clock like the HiveWings that tells them the exact time of day, some can predict the weather, a few are hatched with flamesilk (will be explained later)
How the other tribes view them: Beautiful but weak and easy to push around. HiveWings in particular have no problem with looking down on SilkWings for being a peaceful tribe.
Society: SilkWings were separated by the HiveWings ever since Queen Wasp took over their tribe. They do not have a voice in the Hives' government system. Under Wasp's rule, SilkWings are second class citizens and servants who have almost no rights compared to HiveWings. Examples of a regular SilkWing's occupation would include: construction workers, hive drones (servants), web workers, and other low-ranked jobs, like stall owners or weavers. It has been mentioned that the most disobedient SilkWings were typically assigned construction work given that it is considered to be very unpleasant. SilkWings attend school much like HiveWings do, and are assigned emergency drills as a practice to protect themselves in case a web was falling or if they had to get to a Hive quickly for safety. They also learn about silk weaving, web structure, the history of the Tree Wars, and especially following directions. SilkWings are not allowed to divorce, and are assigned partners by Wasp and her sisters, rather than choosing their own. They are branded on their right palm at a very young age. The SilkWing's initial on their palm is a big letter, while their parent's initials are smaller letters, forming a triangle shape. SilkWings are also cuffed at a young age. These wrist cuffs have their school and other personal information inscribed on it so they can be identified at checkpoints. All cuffs can inject toxin into the wrist to make dragons fall asleep, so that they can be easier to catch in case they ever try to run away.
Names: SilkWings are named after different species of butterfly or moth, like Admiral and Fritillary.
LeafWings
Appearance: LeafWings can be various shades of green and brown, even to the point of being nearly black in color. They can also sometimes have golden or pink-ish red streaks over their bodies and wings. They also have webbed spines along their neck and back, similar to a SeaWing. The webbing along their back splits into individual pieces near the base of the tail, which are shaped like leaves. Their scales are uneven, vaguely resembling chloroplasts and plant cells. They have a plated underbelly and a slender body shape. Their legs seem to be slightly short and thin. Their eyes can be green or brown.
Abilities: Most LeafWings are talented gardeners, can absorb energy from sunlight, a few are hatched with the power of leafspeak (will be explained later)
How the other tribes view them: LeafWings are considered extinct, but are still painted as violent, bloodthirsty monsters.
Society: As of the events of The Lost Continent, this is unknown, although it's suspected they live in The Poison Jungle.
Names: LeafWings were named after different types of trees that are found in forests and woods before the Tree Wars.
